Ty Cobb spikes Frank Baker 1909.
If I am allowed to state Bakers spike wound was in no way intentional and was unavoidable, per picture, also he did not lose an innings play and think records will show he played in all games for rest of season, that I have always resented the unfair and untrue account of this matter. I will give you anything else you want me to say in Bakers behalf, mind you I do not & would not say Baker was responsible for the charge of untruth in papers etc. - Ty Cobb

He was an average player but a real jerk of a person. He's the reason why Cobb played right field for his first few years instead of center. McIntyre played left for the Tigers and Cobb played center when Ty first came up. The two hated each other with a passion and during one game both men intentionally let a base hit roll between them to the fence as they stared each other down. The runner got an inside the park home run. After that, the Tigers manager split them up and moved Cobb to RF and put Sam Crawford in CF.
McIntyre died at age 39 after contracting Tuberculosis (I think).
Anyways, it's a good picture of him.
Sounds like a heck of a guy.
Matty was an AL left-fielder, 1901-12.
This photo is from 1912, his last season, as a White Sox.
He died April 2, 1920, Detroit, MI, age 40, of tuberculosis, never having made his peace with Ty or shaking his hand. But Matty was a good ballplayer in 1908, helping his team to win a pennant.

I love these photo threads. hope no one minds if I resurrect this one.
These two photos come from the LIFE magazine archive.
First Johnny Bench scoring against the Houston Astros. This happened during the second major league game I ever attended, May 30, 1972, on his only career inside-the-park home run, which he hit off Don Wilson in the Astrodome. Astros' C Johnny Edwards and Reds' 1B Joe Hague also pictured. Umpire is Dick Stello.
Second, Ted Kluszewski, apparently from a 1956 spring training game against the Yankees.
