We considered Tinker with the 1st pick. Just couldn't pass up a pitcher the quality of Joss. 6 of the next 7 highest remaining players on our board are position players so hopefully one of them will fall to us at #13

Yeah - I think Joss was easily the best player in the draft. Tinkers value is purely positional cuz his bat really is not much to talk about. But finding a no brainer full time starter at short with a great glove is huge at this point.

I have it - but I need to adjust base running ratings and pitcher durability ratings . . . i will submit the file without the changes today and the updated version before the draft officially starts

My list is very pitcher-heavy at the top (six of the top eight). Maybe I'm slightly overweighting my own needs.

btw, Tinker wasn't one of the two position players in that top eight. probably because I value regular starters who are usually good but rarely great lower than it seems anyone else does.

I agree with your assesment on Pitching in this draft. I had several guys offensively rated better than Tinker, and quite a few pitchers too. Team need raised him up on my draft list a lot.

The original draft was a snake draft in order to create a more even playing field. Subsequent drafts are based entirely on how a team performs and are conducted as they are in real life.

Once I redid the 1902 and 1904 fielding ratings, I provided Rich with a fielding chart for each season and an overall 1901 through 1905 chart. I don't know if they got posted or not, but at any rate I've attached them here. They are Excel files. If for some reason you don't have Excel OR Open Office (which handles Excel files and is free), I could supply an html file. Here are the 1902 through 1905 individual season fielding charts.

Okaayyy, then.... I didn't really think Dougherty would slip to me, but I envisioned him becoming my DH after Delahanty kicks the bucket.

This is not a very good class. I guess I have to take Johnny Evers- pronounced Eevers, apparently. Great D, adequate offense. Will have 4 good/better than good seasons while I control him, supposedly.

Erik Bedard
07-21-2012, 04:14 PM
Evers was the highest position player on my board. Six years as a solid starter, with one of those years potentially MVP-caliber. Fantastic grab at #9.

Sockeye
07-21-2012, 05:08 PM
We had Evers #2 among position players on our board behind only Tinker. Excellent get at #9.

BigRon
07-21-2012, 06:24 PM
Thanks, guys. Sounds like I was discounting Evers- I'm really not. He's a really good player, one of the best in this year's draft. I was just hoping to find a little more offensive pop. I'm going to lose Delahanty in 1 1/3 years from now, and that's a really big hole to fill.

catcher24
07-21-2012, 06:27 PM
I'm pretty surprised that everyone had Evers rated so highly. I thought he would be a steal at #8, until I looked at those seven team controlled years. Only in 1908 is he even a league average hitter - but that, of course, is an MVP level season. If you take the ability to meet anyone's price and keep him via the RFA rule, that adds some value - but only if you're willing to match someone else's price. If he had EX range, maybe his fielding would make up for the lack of a bat early on, but he's just AV two years, then VG (with above average errors) two more, then AV again in 06 (unless someone redoes all of the fielding ratings from all AV). On the chart I was using (value over first five years, based on OPS+ and WAR), he was still fifth or sixth. It should be noted that of all players who debuted in 1902, though, he had by far the highest career WAR. I wasn't willing to gamble on how much someone else might bid in 1909, when he really starts to hit his stride offensively.

Wade8813
07-21-2012, 09:57 PM
I'm not entirely sure where I would have rated Evers (because so much of his value is tied to defense), but I knew he'd be taken before my pick. Of course, then he almost made it to me...

Anyway, I'll take Harry Bemis. Not exactly who I thought I'd get here, but decent catchers are almost non-existent for the next few years.

Erik Bedard
07-22-2012, 10:38 AM

I haven't followed this closely- not even sure who's being referred to. However, I will say that I'm opposed to trading draft choices- always have been, always will be. MLB doesn't allow draft spot trading, so I don't understand why we have it.

I think those trades shouldn't have been allowed in retrospect it has destroyed the competitive balance of this league. I think the issue was more that people were trading without doing research first. Also, I wouldn't say it's destroyed the competitive balance. It's certainly tipped it, but teams that haven't made any meaningful trades can still compete (such as the team with clearly the best regular season record).

I know that in the CKL a team who is on the clock for a make up pick, then has another pick come up again automatically gets skipped. So I figured it was that way here. I don't want to hold up the draft, although I do feel bad about Ed missing out on his picks. Wonder if he even knows it is hus turn.

--We've always allowed the trading of picks in the CKL and it has not been a problem. Not that there haven't been some bad trades, but teams trading picks for players or players for picks have overall come out relatively even.
--As for trading away picks in the start up draft, I would not have been inclined to do that (obviously since I did the opposite) but it could work - and did work for several teams in the CKL startup. I believe both the Skipjacks and Legends traded away picks and went on to build dominant teams in the mid and late 60s, respectively. In any case, that is water under the bridge now since the draft is behind us and won't be repeated.
--I do think that 8 hours is a very short window for first round picks. I am not comfortable with someone losing such a value pick for missing an 8 hour window that you aren't even sure when it will begins. Losing out on 2 first rounders because you aren't on line this weekend is a pretty steep price to pay. OTOH the last 2 picks have been Harry Glade and Rube Vickers, so maybe the price was not that steep :). I think Jack should be commended for delaying his pick and givign Ed a chance to catch up.

I agree with Jack. Since Ed's back on the clock WITH A NEW PICK, he should have eight hours to make it, and the makeup if he chooses to. And I agree with Mark about the first round - eight hours is mighty short window.

I was opposed to permitting trades for picks during the formation draft - especially high round picks - because I think it affects the league balance too much right out of the gate. I was outvoted or over ruled, can't remember which. As for trading normal rookie draft picks, I support that and always have. If someone is building a team, needs one or two parts but doesn't want to trade the parts he's already built, then using picks to get those parts is a good plan.

I guess you can afford to wait six years for that production with the stable of pitchers you have. I'd be reluctant to tie up that cap space all those seasons, though.

here's the thing guys - Ed was online yesterday at 4AM posting on the ckl site while his team was still on the clock with their first pick. I also sent him a message when his clock expired. I agree that flexibility should be exercised when an owner cannot get online, but this was clearly not the case.

And the decision to allow trading formation draft picks was due to overwhelmind support for that option. I was personally against it and most owners felt that was unreasonable, so i allowed it.

jaybird_1981

Trading shouldn't be any better or worse depending on if it's the initial draft or a rookie draft. The only issue is people didn't do research first, and maybe didn't consider what pick number they were likely to get from the trade.

I guess I misunderstood what we were considering as rookies. I figured anyone who was ineligible in 1901 to be taken in the formation draft because they didn't play in 1901, but had played prior to 1901 and then returned, would be considered a rookie the first time they reappear on a major league roster. That appears to be incorrect - they will be treated as free agent?

Naturally. Thought for a while I'd pull that one off.

Smith looks a lot better than his major stats would indicate because of his underlying stats. He and a couple of other guys looked very interesting, but I just have a tough time coming to grips with drafting a guy who really provides nothing for the first four years, especially with 30 man rosters. Although I guess since we can sign extra guys once the season starts, it might work out OK - or at least I think we can. Can we do that here like we can over in the CKL? I'm to the point that I'm starting to confuse rules between different leagues. Sorry.

Apologies for the delay. I was attempting to take Jason up on his trade offer, but his man (Smith) got taken, and I haven't had time to check back until now. That being said, the Express will draft

I did that during the 1901 season. Pretty much had to towards the end of the season in order to have enough PA's to get me through the season.

That is solid choice. Had Courtney ranked #14 overall on our board.

He fit my team much better than anyone else left. He starts playing third base regularly (although with poor range, so maybe he'll DH or something) just when Wolverton retires.

I had expected Deerfoot Barclay to be in Mark's sights when the Dragons pick came up . . . he definately produces this year

How do you suppose George picked up the nickname Deerfoot? Was he as fast as a deer when he covered the OF (not according to his range) or have some really strange cloven look to his feet?

From Wikipedia for George Barclay

He was nicknamed "The Rose" for his concern with his looks and his eye for the ladies[citation needed] and “Deerfoot” because of his speed

Based on his AV defensive rating, he must have just taken bad routes getting to the ball. :)

Kind of like watching Quentin Berry for the Tigers. He's quick as a bunny and makes spectacular catches on fly balls that Austin Jackson makes look routine because of how QB gets to the same spot.

Thought very hard about taking O'Neill with that final pick because of the PAs he provides, but I somehow just couldn't get over that 17 OPS+ in 1902 and the career 49, even though I do realize that a lot of catchers back in those days had similar numbers. Mental barrier.

Apparently not because that slot is still blank in the draft list and there weren't any further posts here after Jason posted that Courtney was already taken.

We didn't actually have a 1901 rookie draft. This is the 1902 rookie draft (per the first post), but the title is inaccurate

No it doesn't really matter to anyone but the one who missed the pick.

And it's pointless for them to make it up now because all the rookies went in the FA pool.

Good point, I forgot about that
