Since baseball fever is in the midst of this "him vs him" threads I thought I's start this one as well. How was the greater ball player, Roy Hobbs or Kelley Leak?

Kelly Leak by a wide margin. He made plays all over the field and he rode that cool motorcycle. Plus he was played by the immortal Jackie Earl Haley. Does anyone even remember the name of the hack that played Hobbs?

True, true. Of course some would argue that Leak's league competition wasn't as strong as Hobbs'.

Competition schmompetition . . . and you can quote me on that.

I'd compare Kelly Leak to Denny McClain. They were both super cool, but they just couldn't play long enough.

Now Roy Hobbs ... there's a ballplayer. He wasn't able to break in until he was older. He knew what the game was about.

When people see him walking down the street they say "There goes Roy Hobbes, the best there ever was in the game"

No, they would have said that had he played a full career. As it was, he'll always be remembered as a one-year wonder and what could have been.

I will not give Kelly Leak credit for being the Bill Lange of his time.

It's a tough call. Leak played a brillant center field, even catching the ball for the other outfielders as well. Hobbs played right field, a less demanding postion, but he had good range and a powerful throwing arm. However, Hobbs struck out more and Leak literally never struck out. Leak had more speed but of course being 12 he should be faster than a 37 year old! Hobbs was a much better "team" player, Leak was more of a motorcyle-riding loner. Of course Hobbs played in a stronger league. It's a classic lefty-righty debate. I haven't decided yet.

Didn't Leak hit over .800? Hobbs had that big slump in the middle of the season.

I just watched The Bad News Bears this past weekend. There was a scene at the ballet school where Kelly was hitting on one of the women students. He told her he was batting .841 for the season so far... :laugh

this was a real tough call to make.
i already had a quarter outta my pocket to flip because i kept going from hobbs to leak, leak to hobbs, back over to leak...

and then i remember that after leak quit baseball, he became interested in cycling.

i recall that i identified with him as a "cutter" (he rode under the assumed "mooch" so as not to be hounded by baseball fans), and so i was all set to cast my vote for leak.
but then i remembered that he reprised his "mooch" role on the television series that starred...
shaun cassidy.
and that is an unforgiveable sin.

Everyone knows that Tanner Boyle was the heart and soul of that team. Sure, Timmy Lupus could wear a good catsup and mustard hat and could catch a fly ball with his eyes closed (but not with them open), but Tanner lived and breathed baseball.

Buttermaker: You wanna quit, Tanner?
Boyle: Crud no. I wanna play ball.

What more could you ask of your shortstop?

Honus Wagner may rule, but the usually reliable HWR is having an off day. First the Pirates/Diamondbacks miss in the 100 wins list, now this. Tanner Boyle definitely played short.

No he didn't! I just saw the movie this past weekend. Remember the scene when Kelly was making all the catches on Buttermaker's orders? He caught a popup to second base and took the ball away from Tanner. Then the opposing right fielder (some really tall guy) asked Tanner if he goes to the bathroom for Tanner, too? Then Tanner chased him into right field. :D

It's one thing to correct me when you're wrong. But to correct me a second time without doing your research? I've seen that movie dozens of times, Tanner has been the shortstop every single time (a real iron man). I must assume you were watching the movie in a mirror.

Here are 7 quick references to Tanner Boyle, SS. I couldn't find one single reference to Boyle playing 2B. Anyone else care to chime in?

I'm a traditionalist, so I'd say Hobbs by a mile. Leak was playing little league. Hobbs was hitting bombs in the majors in his late 30s.

How about this...who would be on your All-Star team of fictional players? I'll start off by saying that leading off, playing center field, would be Willie Mays Hayes...

I would have picked Kelly Leak, but after it was discovered that Buttermaker was injecting him in the ass with HGH, I lost all respect for him. :laugh

#1 pick on the all-fictional team would have to be Sidd Finch, although Nuke LaLoosh would be a good choice as long as you had Crash Davis to keep him on-task.

But Leak was a way better defensive player (at a tougher position), had much better speed and literally almost never made an out. Towards the end of the 1976 season he was still hitting .841.

How about this...who would be on your All-Star team of fictional players? I'll start off by saying that leading off, playing center field, would be Willie Mays Hayes...

Not the "best" team but a "fun" team for sure.

That was the first movie...Actually, his last at bat ever was the pick up game in Japan that was moved outside..He hit an inside the park HR , he could do it all. The next movie was supposed to be in Cuba but of course the Japan movie killed it.

Wow,
i think my little league stats are eerily similar to Kelly Leak's. I never smoked though but i did have a dirt bike at that time. My team were the Astros too...too weird considering they played in the Dome. i also wore number 3 in little league. I have kept my hair though, knock on wood*L*
