I was wondering how people get a nickname?
I has chosen mine to stir the pot on the Red Sox board. I am a member of NYYfans.com as well. Overthere a lot of Red Sox fans come to troll around.
I decided to do the same on a Red Sox board. Then I came to this board and found out that the Sox fans here were not as bad as I thought they would be.

So I stood by the roadside
The soles of my running shoes gripping the tarmac
Like gunmetal magnets
Fixed on the fron of her Fassbinder face
Was the kind of a smile
That only a rather dull child could have drawn
While attempting a graveyard in the moonlight
But she was impressed
You could see that she thought I looked fine
And when she turned sweeter
The reason (between you and me) was
She'd just seen my green Lamborghini

My screenname is simply a play on the fact that people always consider Yankee fans to be "frontrunners" who think about nothing but the 26 rings the team has gotten, even though the 27th seems to be an impossibility. Anyway, of all the famous Yankees who are crowd favorites, I'd say that Donnie is the most famous of them all who's never gotten a ring, nor is he likely HoF worthy. Well, certainly not the top-tiered that Gehrig, Teddy, JoeD, Foxx and others are.
He's also a very classy and humble human being who's been a model citizen on and off the field, including after his playing days were over.

Yea Sorry, I should have clarified.
I just moved tom Montreal in December. I just turned 19 and was unsure what to do for post-secondary schooling, so I took a year off and moved out. I actually lived in Montreal until I was 13, so it felt natural to come back. Montreal is a good place to figure yourself out when your young and its a fun town, but I've figured out what I want to do next year and I'll head back to Ontario next fall for schooling and will probably make my life somewhere in Ontario.
Right now I'm in downtown Montreal.(On Sherbrooke near Atwater) It's an excellent location. Just a short walk to Crescent:o

Mine come from the sports organization I've been associated with as a player(beginning at age 14), coach, mgr, and executive member, including President(2 terms), for 42 years. The Corner Brook West Sports Club has been in operation as a sponsor of amateur sports teams for 45 years now. The name on all their teams is the "Monarchs". We sponsor teams in baseball, hockey, soccer, broomball, basketball and softball. Both ladies and mens, and in minor, junior and senior.
The "29" comes from my favorite Expo of all time, Tim Wallach.
My signature at the bottom is from the Oldtimers, or "Masters" baseball team that I play with. Since the numbers only go from 1-18, 29, obviously, wasn't available..

Not surprisingly, he's a national hero here. I watched the fight with my wife ( I fell alseep in the 6th round) who knows nothing of baseball, football, basketball, golf, or any other sport for that matter, but she was taking points away from Morales the whole time I was watching.
She woke me up in the 12th and told me Manny had won by TKO. I said, "that's nice, sweetie," and proceeded to fall back asleep.
I was getting tired of watching him selling everything from underwear to dietary supplements to pain relievers in between rounds.
They don't show any replay between rounds and they constanlty cover up the time display with ads.
He did a movie and an album recently, despite the fact he has absolutley no acting or signing skills.

The 16 is not my age, as I'm sure some of you (though hopefully not very many) have thought. It is kind of my favorite number because I was born on the 16th of July. For me it was either lucky 16 or lucky 7, but don't a lot of people say that the number 7 is their lucky number?
Edit: This happens to be my 250th post. I've been on BBF for about 6 months. I think Annie said her post was #4000 in 4 years. If I were to keep up my current pace, I would hit 4000 in a total of 8 years! Wow. That's a lot of posts.

Yeah..I picked up a couple boxes of the mix to take home with me. They didn't turn out as well when I made them, but they were still good.
I ordered a case of the hurricane mix from Pat O'Briens when I got home as well.
They had it to me in a week.

I have found that my nickname story is wildly disappointing to anyone who has never heard it. Pretty much everyone I know calls me Scoops, I've had the nickname for probably about 10 years now. Many never knew why, or how, I got the nickname but they assume there's some great story to go with it. After all, most nicknames have good, or at least funny, stories. On occasion they ask me to explain the nickname (especially since pretty much none of my friends have a nickname at all).
A few of my friends were sitting around the house one evening, drinking and eating. One of my friends (not me) was eating Fritos Scoops. He turned to me and said, for no apparent reason, "We're going to call you Scoops." It stuck. I fought it for about a week, but it stuck.

Mikie
02-03-2006, 01:36 PM
Mine's about as creative as sschirmer's...I've been called "Mikie" ever since the famous Life cereal commercial came out when I was in 8th grade. I know, most people spell it "Mikey", if you look up the dialogue of the commercial that's how it's spelled, but I've always spelled it with the i-e, no particular reason.
I've been an internet user/surfer/goofer-offer since early 1994 when a roommate and I first figured out how to connect to what I still think of as "real" BBS's...the kind with 32-character message limits and 24-hour turnarounds, the closest relic I know of still extant these days is the SABR-L Listserv whose format is no more than a couple of steps beyond the original ones. I've been "Mikie" on the 'net ever since, perhaps the first, who knows.
When I came across this site last year and liked it and went to register, there was already a "Mikie", which I'm pretty sure was me from an earlier crossing of paths that I either forgot or wasn't excited by, so many sites so little time and all that. My standard (highly creative) solution to the multiple "Mikie" dilemma is to tack on the first few letters of my last name, so, voila..."MikieNix". I used to use numbers, like "Mikie1", but pretty soon started running into places where that was also taken, and trying "Mikie2", "Mikie3", etc. until I got a unique one led to having too many handles and it became impossible to remember which witch was which.
FWIW, could one of the Mods PM me with a question or two to prove if I was the just plain "Mikie" username? Obviously, I don't remember the password for it, and it probably predates the system I now use for those so I probably can't guess it, either. Heck, as I get older, even remembering the first few letters of my last name is becoming a challenge...:noidea

In March of 2004 Some friends of mine and I went to Calgary, Alberta for a Metallica concert. One of my friends, Chris, worked at a call centre and found Metallica Drummer Lars Ulrich's cell phone number in the database. We had a joke that after the show we would call Lars and Chris would say "He Lars, it's Chris from New York calling. Where's the party at?" (We're weren't actually from NY, we just figured Lars knew a Chris from New York.) In retrospect that's not even a very good story, but, hey, that's what roadtrips are for I guess. I have no idea why I picked it for a screen name though.

If you'd like details of how to do this, please post into the "Web Improvements" forum asking for directions.
Basically, there's the "Forgot your password" option, in which a temporary password is emailed to you. Given that you've re-registered, and since there's only one password per email address, then you'd have to check your other email addresses to see if you've received anything recently from this site.
From there, you click on the link and your password is chaned to the one chosen for you by the site.

So, I show my support to my favorite manager. :)

Anyway, for my name i thought of picking something to show that im a yankee fan but also something that sounds majestic because after all it is the YANKEES. Reading your message made me realize that I blew it by not using a great classical Greek name...Aias...Antigonus Monopthalmus...Demetrius Poliorcetes...interesting that the name would be Perseas in modern Greek. I only know a little about ancient Greek, nothing about modern.

Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:

AA3RT is my amateur radio callsign. I became interested in radios way back in the early 1960's. One of the things I enjoyed was listening to baseball games from far away places, this in the days of 10 team leagues, before divisions, playoffs and interleague play. My original call sign was N3KUQ, which I was never enamored with. When I upgraded my license, I applied for the vanity call AA3RT. My name is Art, last initial also starts with an "A" so this seemed a natural.

A very interesting story behind that-it is that Powel Crosley marketed household appliances. Washing machines, dryers, refrigerators but most important-radios! To provide a market for his radios, he purchased radio station WLW, a clear-channel 50,000 watt station in Cincinnati, Ohio. And to provide programming for his radio station, in the days before recorded music was a staple, he also purchased the Cincinnati Reds, building a new park for them to play in-you guessed it-Crosley Field! Crosley was also an early producer of televisions, just after World War II.
Here's a link on the very interesting Powel Crosley, including information on his ownership of the Reds:

BTW-didn't the Reds have a farm team in the Eastern League that played in Thetford Mines, Quebec for a few years?

If the Reds were on the west coast, the game would have been played later. After the sun goes down, the ionosphere expands, allowing for the further travel of radio waves. I experienced the same thing listening to the Pittsburgh Pirates on KDKA-while Senators and Orioles games broadcast locally couldn't make it through the "hash" of other radio stations here in southern Maryland, KDKA usually came booming through.

That would be a really really obscure reference one that one would only understand if they checked out a few dictionaries or I guess memorized entire passages from the book. Though I enjoyed Catch-22 (its one of those books I have read it more then once, a definite honor and in rare company) it was not thought of during the search for a moniker.

I remember when I first joined BBF, we were having a pretty intense discussion about Joe Jackson and Charley Comiskey. I noticed your avatar and user name were certainly different than most here so I looked the word up.

Yes, I know I'm straying off topic here but one of the most hilarious episodes I remember was when Sammy Maudlin started singing "Here Comes Santa Claus", fell down on the stage in a coughing spasm and later announced that one day he's gonna kick those cigarettes to the tearful encouragement of William B.

Excellent! My favorite was when Lon Chaney Jr. was dressed up like an "Indian" (Native American, not Cleveland) and giving a demonstration of rock throwing...he was supposed to knock and apple off William B's head, and popped him right in the cubes instead! William B had to stay in character and keep laughing while rolling on the floor in agony, Maudlin was about to slap his own knee off, and Chaney (Eugene Levy) cracked, "William B not bother squaw anymore!"
I thought that it was good bust on condescending treatment of other cultures on TV besides some good physical comedy...

Actually this skit was a parody based on a famous incident that occurred on the Johnny Carson show, way back in April of 1965, when Ed Ames (of the singing "Ames Brothers") made an appearance on the Carson show. Mr. Ames played the role of "Mingo", a Native American sidekick of Fess Parker, who starred as "Daniel Boone" on a TV show of that name. To add authenticity to his role, Ed Ames had practiced his ability to throw a tomahawk. When asked to demonstrate his newly acquired "skill", he threw a tomahawk at a large piece of plywood with the outline of a cowboy drawn on it, striking the target squarely in the "family jewels". When the sustained laughter finally died down, Carson made the classic ad-lib: "I didn't know you were Jewish!".
3CPTV was a parody of a Russian television station using sometimes faulty or outdated equipment, battling with North American TV satellites for coverage time.

Pop Top, Son of Fat Cat was the name of an old tomcat that crossed my path many years ago. One of the coolest, and biggest (19+ pounder) cats I've had the privilege of being acquainted with. Had talons that a hawk would be proud of and could open just about any door that wasn't locked, including the oven door that he would jump up and hang on until it came open, once lifting a small pork roast from inside. I ate bean burritos that night instead

Simply becasue he is the greatest Cardinal of them all..... I am not old enough to have watched him play, but my Dad still talks fondly of Stan the Man, and EVERY Cards fan knows him. Too bad more people don't, he was truly a legend of the game. Seeing his statue outside Busch Stadium is one of my fondest, and earliest memories. It was so big (to a little kid anyway) and it is good the statue has a prominent place at the new ballpark.
I loved it when he threw out the first pitch at game 5 of the World Series about a month ago. The score board simply said... Stan The Man. No need for a last name for him is St. Louis.
My favorite player when I was a kid was Ozzie Smith. My last name IS Smith, and despite my very, and I mean VERY bets efforts, I could not get my wife to agree to OZZIE as a middle name for either of our two sons. What a glorious chance wasted!!!

I took my username from the term that was given to certain Red Sox players from the 2001 team that always played hard, hustled and had that blue-collar attitude everytime they stepped on the field. They play with a lot of heart, grit and aren't scared of getting their uniforms dirty. Bottom line is that they go all out, which is the way I believe every player should play. Fans appreciate that effort.

I'm not sure, even with being here a short while, if I'm even memorable...
But, I'll share.
1) My friend in high school thought I looked like Disco Stu (from The Simpsons). He called me that for a while.
2) Eventually, "Disco Stu" shortened to "Stu". This lasted for quite a while.
3) Ray Romano hosted SNL. He did an ESPN: Sportscenter skit with Tim Meadows (playing Stuart Scott). Whenever he'd pass it off, he'd say some variation on "Stu", like, "Stu-Pot!" "Stumanji!" was one of the variations.
Been using it since.
catcher24
03-18-2007, 05:52 AM
Well, I sure missed this one originally. Thought I had put up the same info on another thread, and maybe there is (or was) a similar thread somewhere. Anyway, it's pretty simple. I played ball with in an over 40 league for about 11 years, and the last four I caught most of the time. My uniform number is 24 (in honor of a certain HOF centerfielder who was my baseball idol when I was growing up in the 60's - Say Hey!). Hence, catcher24. Not even close to some of the great stories I read in the thread, but it works for me.
Pete Rose Rounding Third
09-12-2007, 07:22 PM
Sorry to resuscitate an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new thread if one existed.
I used to listen to the Jim Rome radio show. At the time I was listening, a caller made a reference to Pete Rose rounding third in the All-Star game and running over Gene Tenace at the plate. Rome, his producer, and his screener all agreed that Tenace wasn't the catcher in question, but they couldn't remember who the catcher was. Well, people started sending in dozens of faxes mocking the caller, sending in lines like "Remember when Pete Rose rounded third and ran over Joe DiMaggio at home?", or "...ran over Josh Gibson", or "Ryne Sandberg". Then, Pete Rose would turn into Rod Carew, or George Brett, or Tony Gwynn, and on it would go. Eventually, the faxes turned into pop culture references such as "Remember when Luke Skywalker rounded third and ran over Darth Vader at home?". This gag took hold for days.
I know that description probably didn't come off very funny, but it really was. One of those "you had to be there" things. Anyway, when I was trying to decide upon a screenname, I remembered that whole thing. So there it is.
