View Full Version : Who's going to be the Ace in a few years?

So it looks like we're going to be going one more time around with this veteran team built around winning with Bonds. I'm totally fine with Sabean's overall strategy. Bonds is the best player of all time so in the short run, we have no better chance than to put the team on his shoulders one more time.
I've recently been thinking about what sort of team we could expect in the future and I (like most of us) am excited about the pitching we'll have in Noah Lowry and Matt Cain. I couldn't watch the Giants games in the latter part of the season (I live in Brooklyn and didn't have access to the internet and mlb.tv) so I didn't get to see Matt Cain pitch. I really like Lowry but that's because I love seeing those left-handed changeup specialists. I hear great things about Cain. What do people think? Is he as good as the media is telling me? Will he look as good the second time batters face him? Who's going to be the ace when Schmidt and Morris leave us? What do you guys think? WC?

I know that Giants fans think Cain is the real deal, and it turns out that people outside of Giants fans think that too. He has the stuff to be an Ace, and if things go like most people think, he could be that by 2007. Noah is likely to be a solid #2 for many years, but the jury is still out on Hennessy, Correia, Valdez etc.

BTW, our own BBF expert HiddenGem thinks Cain is the real deal too.

Cain is good- I hope they don't overuse him. Lowry reminds me a lot of a young glavine. He needs to fine tune his slider/curve to be very effective. Cain has two pitches right now. A fast ball and a fast ball. Ok, he also has a slider. If he learns the changeup, he will be unhittable. I also like Hennessy. He has good sink on his ball, which is what many teams covet.

Just remember, Foppert, Ainsworth, and Williams were just as highly touted as Cain is now. And we know what happened to those other three, right?

Foppert and Williams are still out there. Foppert was set back by an injury. And once again he had two decent pitches. If he develops a third pitch, he see Seattle pretty soon. Williams is still very young too. The cubs stole Williams from the Giants and I think he has the makeup to be a decent #2 starter in the pros.

But they are not pitching for the Giants!! The Giants management proclaimed these three pitchers as the Giants' future and simply gave up on them. :mad:
