I started watching baseball in 1976, precisely when the Royals became a great team. I just realized I have lots of baseball memories from my youth that involve the Royals, the four ALCS series against the Yankees, Brett chasing .400, the 1980 World Series, Hal McRae, Amos Otis, Willie Wilson, Al Cowens, Paul Splittorff, Dennis Leonard, Lary Gura, the 1985 World Series, Dane Iorge, Dan Quisenberry, Brett Saberhagen, U.L. Washington and his toothpick, and the powder blue road uniforms! Will the Royals ever be that good again? :ughh

I still don't care for those rival Royals who edged out my Angels for several division cahmpionships in that era. 1978, 1984, 1985 come to mind. Those days seem like ancient history now.

Has it been that long? I still remember 1979 and 1982. How did the Halos blow a 2-0 lead? :ughh

I think that 10 year span from 1976-85 was about as good a stretch as any team had in recent history.
Those were some awesome teams. They showed a lost of guts when they took on those Yankee teams in 4 ALCS'(1976-78,80).A couple of breaks here and there against the Yanks, and the Royals could have easily won pennants in '76 and '77.

I'd love to see them that good again. I live in NY, and I'm a Mets fan, but I want to see equality in baseball again, where every team has a chance to win, instead of just the Yankees, Mets, etc.
Those were the good ole days....back when Saberhagen & George Brett played.

Since when do the Mets win??? The Mets are as badly run as the Royals..The difference is the Mets make more expensive mistakes...

Well, the Mets have been in the World Series as recently as six years ago.

The Mets? I missed that one.... But seriously, I'm with you on this one. Parity would make it a lot more interesting... Imagine how exciting the AL East would be if the team soon to be formerly known as the Devil Rays had a legitimate shot at mediocrity! :)

Back in those days it was a best of five series. The first two were at home and the last three were on the road and the series opened in Anaheim and the Angels won the first two.
When the series got back to Milwaukee, Don Sutton got the win for the Brewers in game 3. Game four was a game played in horrible weather, in other words, rain and several of the players homes in So Cal were threatened by wildfires back home. That is quite a distraction wondering about your home from 2000 miles away.
In game 5 the Angels had the lead late in the game and Luis Sanchez failed to hold the lead and Gene Mauch was criticeized for not bringing in lefty Andy Hassler in the game. Carew ended the game by grounding out in the top of the 9th.
Fast forward to 1986 and that infamous ninth inning at Anaheim Stadium for game 5 against the Red Sox. The Angels had Mike Witt on the mound, who had a solid season and a 4-1 lead. Witt gives up a two run dong to Don Baylor and cut's the score to 4-3 and with two outs, lefty Rich Gedman, who was 3-3 (homer, double off the wall, single) was due up. Mauch summoned in lefty Gary Lucas, who had success against Gedman and Gedman had trouble with leftys. On the first pitch, Lucas hit Gedman on the frickin shoulder and Mauch then brought in Donnie Moore. The rest is history.
Mauch was damn for not bringing in the lefty, and damned for brining in the lefty. What dumb luck for old Gene Mauch.

Do you know something we don't know about the future of TB?
It's pretty much agreed that with the hostile takeover by the current owner this past offseason that they will get better...they already have a core of decent players, just needed much better oversight in the front office to get them up to .500 at least.
Hmm, might this work out there in Kansas City? Get a person or group of people who are committed to winning and building a contender from the ground up and I think you have the makings of a great team.
It certainly will bring out the fans, they have been waiting for a great team for 18 years. Nothing brings fans out to the ballpark like a winner- their attendance figures from their winning years confirms that.

Amazing how "bad decisions" can ruin a great career...Probably kept him out of the Hall of Fame all these years(at least for the time being):grouchy ...

I was actually commenting on the "formerly known as" part of the post...not what is currently occuring.
I took the post that there was speculation that TB will be moving or contracted.

The Royals and Tigers games of the late 70's trough mid eighties were always thrilling. Kansas City had some fine teams during those years. Solid pitching, fine position players. Six division titles in 10 years, not including the half season championship in 1981. It's a shame to see them at the level they're at now.

The Royals will start winning for real again, IMHO, when the front office makes a priority out of pitching. They must hire a real pitching coach, to let talented pitchers like Zack Greinke grow and develop.

Is the problem Greinke or the team??

Greinke's problems are due to the team he's on, and the team's problems are due to the owner's intent on playing Walmart baseball.

Unfortunately, I was born in the winter of 1987, just when the Royals began their downward tumble. Since I've been watching baseball, the Royals have only gotten worse and worse. They've never made the playoffs in my lifetime.

I lived in KC-South in the early '80s until the mid '90s, so I just missed the Whitey Herzog era, but caught the World Championship. My dad and I made the trip to Cooperstown to see George enshrined, and it was great. Half of Kansas City showed up for that.
I never thought I'd see the day when KC was losing 100 games a season and the Tribe was a perennial contender -- never. This must be as bad as having the A's back in town, and they were truly awful. As a long-time Tribe fan, I can certainly empathize with you diehard Royals fans.

I was only 5 years old during the '85 season, but I remember a lot of excitement at the games I went to that year... and unfortunately not much else! I didn't go to any postseason games, however, my father did go to game 7 of the World Series that year. I believe he also attended a game during the '80 World Series too. Seems so long ago! The last good Royals memory that I can readily recall is the 14-game winning streak they had going into the strike and a suprise competitive season back in '03. Other than that its been over 15 years of bland baseball!
