Do you think Jim Leyland enjoyed the ninth inning as much as we all did today? I wonder if he could bring Rodney in in the 8th some time and let him at least TRY and put it in the bag. Would it upset the 'chemistry' of the clubhouse? Would Jones feel slighted? Would opposing teams feel slighted at having a much slimmer chance for a morale-boosting comeback? I dunno, what say y'all?

You know while I might agree with you in some sense. I also have to look at the IMPORTANT #s, the Tigers are winning they have among the fewest if not the fewest blown saves in MLB (1 each Rodney, Jones). I would be sure that Leyland looks at those smae numbers. Besides if people didn't like rollercoasters Cedar Pointe would be out of business.

BTW- Todd Jones tied Mike Henneman for most saves in club history today. There's 2 guys cut from the same cloth.

So if Mike Henneman gave the equivalent thrill of the Magnum XL-200, I'm guessing Todd Jones to be a Millennium Force type. Anyway, we are officially in first place, 7-2 against the Twins so far, and ten games up on them. They've beaten us to death these past years, so vengeance is ours for now, but when do we get to avenge 1987?;)

I hope soon. I'm sick of seeing New York and Boston in the playoffs. Detroit is out to destroy, and without inept manager Alan Trammell (not to defame his playing career, he didn't have a great manager career) at the helm, they're looking for the first winning season since 1993 -- in style.

how true..nothing against Tram, as he was truly beloved here, despite
being too much like 'mister rogers' as a skipper..but he was doomed
from the start...heck, batman, superman, or wonder woman, couldn't
have raised those tram tiger teams...short on talent, no desire, and
too selfish..and once TRAM lose the respect and control of the club,
he was gonesville..with the likes of pudge, etc...maybe one day
TRAM will skipper again in the bigs...i hope so, but he needed further
seasoning either as a coach, or some AAA time..as a skipper

I still don't understand the reasoning behind the "designated set-up man" and the "designated closer"...never did. If a pitcher is mowing 'em down in the eighth, why not give him the chance to close it out? It makes no sense to me.

The "save" is probably the lamest pitching stat in baseball. If anything, there should be a +/- stat similar to hockey combining saves and blown saves. I realize there's now a "blown save" stat, but which gives a clearer "one-glance" picture of a late reliever's effectiveness: a combined +/- or two separate stats?

Concerning Todd Jones, he may still be a "roller coaster", but at least he's making the hitters "hit" their way on.:laugh
