The Cubs are in desperate need for an addition to this weak hitting team. Good news Cubs fans! The Cubs are about to add a heavy hitting first baseman who hits for average and should provide quite a bit of pop out of the third spot in the lineup. They're also about to add a speedy switch hitting outfielder with above average defense.

I also hear that the Cubs are close to adding a couple of solid starting pitchers to steady the rotation. One has a career 3.24 ERA with a 7:2 strikeout to walk ratio. The other has a career 3.98 ERA with a 2:1 career strikeout to walk ratio. The addition of these two pitchers will help a struggling rotation and should eliminate the need for Glendon Rusch in the rotation.

Who are the players I'm talking about? Well, you might have heard of them... Derrek Lee, Angel Pagan, Mark Prior and Wade Miller. Here is the updated information for the four wounded Cubs.

Mark Prior: Mark Prior threw 38 pitches over two innings in an extended spring training game on Friday.
"He threw two innings and threw well," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "His stuff is coming along, it's better. His fastball velocity came up a little bit." Prior is expected to make one or two appearances in Arizona. He'll then begin an official rehab assignment. Assuming that there's no setbacks, he could return in three or four weeks. Prior could return to the Cubs as soon as June 9th. Source: Cubs.MLB.com

Derrek Lee: Lee has started swinging a lighter bat with his good arm in order to help ease his return to action. Lee is scheduled to have his cast removed on May 31st and soon after he will begin rehab and is expected to rejoin the Cubs on or around June 10th. Source: Ron Santo, Cubs Radio Broadcaster

Angel Pagan: Outfielder Angel Pagan, on the disabled list since April 16 with a torn left hamstring, is two to three weeks away, Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. Pagan has been running on a treadmill with a weight-bearing device that takes the pressure off his legs. He could be jogging under his own power by the end of the week, O'Neal said. Pagan has been hitting and throwing. He's doing his rehab in Mesa, Ariz., at the Cubs facility. Source: Cubs.MLB.com

Wade Miller: Miller is to pitch Monday in an extended spring training game in Arizona and is said to be just a week or so behind Prior. Until the results of Miller's session Monday are released it will be hard to predict a return date. Upon his return Miller will take a spot in the rotation, as promised by Jim Hendry. He will likely serve as a 4th or 5th starter for the Cubs.

It will be huge to get these guys back. Most of all D. Lee, who is as classy a player as have ever played in this city. Hes going to be back early for such an injury.

I can't wait untilt hese guys come back. It will be the team we had in Early April hopefully. I rememebr just being so happy with the way we were before Lee went out. Pagan will be a huge bench addition. Prior and Miller can only improve the rotation. Better than what we've got with Hill, Rushc and according to the past few outing Marshall.

Yes so once the season is half over with and the Cubs are 5 to 10 games unders .500 we should be ready to go. All signs point to late June or July for all of these guys back and who knows how much longer after that to get to 100%. Heck even Kerry is not even healthy and he is considered back.

The Cubs to have a reasonable shot at the playoffs would have to go 75-43 from here on out. A .636 winning % which would be the second best % in the NL, and that is from this moment on. If in the next 30 games as they wait for these players to come back they somehow manage to go .500 then they would have to go 60-22 in there final 88 games, that is a .682 winning % which would be tied for best in the majors. So in otherwords in order for the Cubs to make the playoffs you have to believe that the regular Cubs team has the talent to win 110 games over 162 game season. Did anybody here think they were this good before the season?

Now then if they go 13-17 in the next 30 games they would have to go 62-20 for a .705 winning %

So in order for the Cubs to have a realistic shot at the playoffs they need to turn it around now not in a month and they need some of the teams ahead of them to fall back, mostly all of them. Last year at this point Houston was in a similar situation but they didn't wait to turn it around they started to turn it around now and they ended up having the best record in baseball from there on out. Nobody in baseball had a higher winning % then Houston did in its final 116 games. Plus everybody with a winning % ahead of the Astros played worse from there on out then they did beforehand allowing the Astros to move past them all and get in with 89 wins just past a Phillies team that basically did what the Astros did.

I'm very afraid that they'll end up at about 75-87 and Dusty/Hendry/McFail can effectively blame injuries for this embarrassing season and bring everyone back for another go at it next year.
Luckily the Cubs were taken to the woodshed by the AAA Marlins last night, preventing any chance at a sweep, which would be reason enough for the Cubs to announce a Dusty Baker contract extension party.

History would tell us that three of these guys will be back on the DL within 30 days. Then what?? Prior and Wood are heartbreakers.

The Cubs arent going to the playoffs this year. But that doesnt mean they cant accomplish something.
