View Full Version : We could use a starting pitcher...

Besides Pedro and Glavine, the Mets' starting pitching has been very inconsistent. Although Trachsel and Soler looked great in both of their last outings, overall, they've been very shakey. El Duque can't stop walking people and giving up HR's. With the good play of Lastings Milledge, both in the field and with the bat, I'm starting to think that he's ready for the majors full-time. I think that when Nady gets back, we should try to trade him for a top starting pitcher. Let's say the Giants are starting to fade towards the deadline, they could def. use a young power-hitting OFer like Nady. They have guys like Jason Schmidt (FA) and Matt Morris (2 years left) who they could dangle...

Funny that 2 days after you write this, El Duque pitches his 1st complete game in about 6 years:clapping

I'd feel more comfortable with another starter but I feel confident we can continue winning with what we have... Shouldnt Bannister be coming back somewhat soon?

Also, would love to have Schmidt but I wouldnt think the Giants would give up on him at this point as they are only 2 games out of 1st place.. Maybe if they falter in the next 2-3 weeks they may think about it but I would think they could command more than Nady...

Orlando did pitch a great game, which is nice, but I doubt he's going to be healthy/be this good for the rest of the season. Regarding Bannister, he was placed on the 60 day disabled list, so he's not coming back for a long while - which I think is a good thing since he sucks. Yes, I know, he's 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA, BUT his WHIP is 1.39 and he's only struck out 14 guys in 28 IP. I forgot to mention that he's actually walked more guys than he's struck out (17 BB/14 K). These numbers are a recipe for a disaster...

Regarding Schmidt...

I realize that the Giants are close to first place, that why I said that IF they are fading towards the deadline, we should hop on him. It might take more than Nady, but not Milledge or Pelfrey - which is very important.

You don't want Matt Morris. Trust me.

Yes, I don't want Matt Morris. :p

The Mets have a surplus of outfielders now. Nady and Victor Diaz could be expendable. I'd prefer to keep Cliff's lefty bat.

Dontrelle might be out of reach. Milledge ain't goin' nowhere. :D

I'd take Morris...I know he hasn't been good this year, but he has a good track record. Not to mention his last start...

Before they do anything, I think they should wait & see how Soler pans out. This guy definitely has tons of potential. If he doesn't work out, they should wait until Zito becomes a free agent, then move in on him. That's what I'd do.

That's what I'd do.barry zito has zero interest in playing in new york. unless the mets acquire him via a trade, i don't see him playing there. if he becomes a free agent at the end of the season, my guess is that he signs with a west coast team.

Exactly. Could you throw in the Brooklyn Bridge too to sweeten the deal?

I agree... I really have high hopes for Soler! Every start has been better (although it will be hard to top his last start)

The team is really, really playing well now!

Soler seems to be too intense....he could be his own worst enemy. That said, he was awesome last night wasn't he? :D

No doubt BARRY ZITO is the quintessential California kid who loves the beach and surfing.

Having said that, with both the METS and pinstripers (among others) hot on his trail, the deep color of green (and I don't mean like his uniform), could make a pretty convincing argument (in favor of NY) for the next few years.

The A's are not just going to let him drift into free agency without getting something for him.

Stay tuned.

You would definitely think that wouldn't you.. What would you do though, if you were the GM and the A's are battling for a playoff spot? Would you stick with Zito and chance disrupting a playoff run and taking a chance to losing him next year or would you keep him and play to win now?

Tough call..

Oh I would agree.. He did seem to tone it down a bit last night though.. Maybe thats why he had his best start?

Hopefully the presence of El Duque can calm him down and make him feel more comfortable... So far so good since El Duque has joined the team:)

Why? Because he did the same thing you and I would probably do under the same circumstances?

I agree that it would be a real tough call. Still, Billy Beane has already stated that there is no way that the A's could afford, or would be willing to pay, the $$$ that Barry would command in his next contract.

I think the only player I'd trade for Mulder on the Mets is Chad Bradford.
