Cain brings back memories
From John Shea of The Sporting Green staff

Matt Cain came one hit and one inning from delivering the Giants' first no-hitter since John "The Count" Montefusco no-hit the Braves on Sept. 29, 1976. Pretty nice performance by Montefusco, but glancing at the boxscore from that game in Atlanta 30 years ago, something else jumps out at you.

Johnnie LeMaster doubled and tripled.

LeMaster played 12 big-league seasons, and the last thing the shortstop was known for was hitting. Especially triples. He had 19 in his career. But in Montefusco's no-hitter, LeMaster, a .222 career hitter, was the hitting star.

He had a sacrifice fly, scored twice and finished with three RBIs in a 9-0 victory. Not many people noticed, however. The attendance was 1,369.

The Montefusco no-hitter was in Atlanta.

I believe Ed Halicki had the last Giants no-no at home on August 24, 1975. Here's the boxscore:

Two things about Halicki

1) He was 6'7"

2) Controversy with his no-hitter

August 24, 1975: After New York wins the first game, 9–5 in San Francisco, the Giants Ed Halicki records a somewhat controversial no-hitter in beating the Mets 6–0 in the 2nd game. The 6'7" righthander strikes out 10 Mets to improve his record to 8–10. Craig Swan takes the loss. The controversy arise when Rusty Staub hits a ball off Halecki's leg, which caroms to the 2B Derrel Thomas, who picks it then drops it. Official scorer Joe Sargis rules it an E-4. NY columnist Dick Young, watching the game on TV, writes that it should be a hit and accuses Sargis of subscribing to the theory that the first hit of a starter should be a 'good one.' The no-hitter stands but UPI's Sargis loses his job as a sometime scorer.

I have no memories of Ed Halicki. I was just seven years old. What are some of your memories of Halicki?
