Ok, Shea Hillenbrand was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. Should the Giants go after him? He's 31 years old, a pretty good hitter and can play 1B/3B.

hillenbrand in half a season (81 games played in 2006):
296 ab
.300 avg
.450 slg
.325 obp
.820 ops
39 rbi
12 hr
decent numbers. i think "average defense" when i think of hillenbrand.
but, what does he cost, wags, any idea? 4-5M originally?

He'd only play 1B for the Giants, but that's a place we could use some help with. And with him only for half a season I think he probably wouldn't wear out his welcome that fast. But as we know, Felipe is a no nonsense kind of manager and would not put up with some of his stuff, so Shea better understand that coming in.
The Giants really could use this guy. It just makes too much sense not to go after him, since first base is arguably their worst position, and most importantly, they wouldn't have to give up a good prospect for him.

I say that we do need a first baseman but I don't think we're desparate for one. We don't need another cancer in the clubhouse either. I say wait until the end of the season, drop Barry's contract, and pick up Carlos Lee as a first baseman with the salary cap room we have after Barry is released.

I don't like having to give up Accardo, but the throw in with the deal, Vinnie Chulk, looks intriguing. He has a 18/5 k/bb ratio, but he's given up 29 hits in 24 innings, so he's probably around the plate a lot. Hopefully Rags can do some good with him.

It's hard for me to get too excited about this trade. Accardo was one of the decent relievers in a dreadful bullpen. Hillenbrand has been effective against lefties (.924 OPS) but far less so against righties (.780 OPS). Sweeney is better against righties than Shea, but history shows that Sweeney wears down if he plays too often.
Chulk is interesting in that he's a righty reliever that has been much better against lefties than righties. But I would have rather seen them sign Craig Wilson than Hillenbrand; same OPS against righties, Craig is a little higher against lefties and could also spell in the outfield. He can also play catcher in a pinch, which could come in handy with Matheney's future in question.

Hey. I'm a Jays fan, but I decided to come right to the source to get the scoop on Jeremy Accardo. Is he any good (beyond what the statistics say)?

Hey I just thought of something. If Shea Hillenbrand had been traded to the Mets, then he would have been able to have played all his home games at Shea Stadium! Too bad!
:laugh
Richmond, since the Giants traded him he'll become one of the most incredible relievers ever.

No, seroiusly. Vinnie Chulk was scary last year. He spent the beginning of this year in AAA, and has been alright whilie in the bigs. Hillenbrand never really did it for me, personally. I never really considered him an impact player.

You Giants really ripped us off. For god's sakes the Accardo(is that his name??) guy gave up an RBI double to a .191 hitter. Hope you're happy.

Who was the .191 hitter? Sfgiants29 your sig says the Giants will be carrying 4 of's. Winn, Alou, Crawford, and Lee how is that possible?

I dunno about that. Getting a good young middle reliever, for a guy who wasn't ever going to put the Jays uniform on again, plus a future journey reliever. That's sounds like it worked well for both teams.

Accardo throws 97 gas and is young. I had nice hopes for him before he was traded.

I believe he is thinking of Lee as a 1B, which is what a lot of people have been suggesting.
