A couple days ago (Saturday), during a game between the Durham Bulls and Rochester Red Wings, an interesting play happened (wow, that was a bad sentence).
Runner on first, one out. Alex Romero catches a foul fly ball next to the stands, and, thinking it was the third out, gave it to a fan. The runner was allowed to score (after deliberation; originally sent to third), though Durham still lost.

I know I saw a clip of this happening in the majors some years ago, although the player was able to get the ball back and throw it into play---does anyone remember this?

Yeah, the guy tossed it to some fan in center field then had to run over and get it back. I don't remember who that was though. And once when the ball was still in play, David Wells (I think) handed it to the umpire to get a new ball. While he was doing that, the runners kept going.

Larry Walker did it back in the day when he played for the Expos.

I'd say, around maybe 92-93, at Dodger stadium. Walker caught a fly ball in right field, gave the ball to a kid in the stands, started jogging towards the dogout, realised there was just two outs, got the ball back from the kid and threw to the infield.

Not his proudest moment as an Expo.

I know Benny Agbayani and Larry Walker have both done it.

Joe DiMaggio did the 50s equivalent once: After catching what he thought was the third out, starting jogging in, allowing the runner on third to score.

Trot Nixon also did this a couple of years ago.

I don't think they should be allowed to get the ball back and throw it in. Once it goes into the stands it is out of play and the runners should only be allowed to advance 1 base or however many they get.

Didn't Manny Ramirez also do this once? That's what I heard.

I remember him jogging in once when there was only two outs, but I don't remember him throwing one into the stands.

I thought Matsui ALMOST did it. He was about to throw it then Jeter called out to him and he still made the play. That's what I remember anyway.

Ya probably don't remember it exactly just remember him catching it near the left field stands and going to give it to a fan.

Would it not be a ground rule double? I mean if it's a situation where the ball is hit and it bounces over the wall and into the crowd, is the outfielder allowed to retrieve the ball from the crowd and try to get the runner out?
