Here's a little project that I had in mind. We're taking every single team and simming playoffs on www.whatifsports.com to see what is the "best" year from each team, and then taking those teams and simming a playoff against each other to see what team is "The best team of all-time."
TEAMS THAT HAVE QUALIFIED:
Brooklyn Gladiators 1890
Brooklyn Wonders 1890
Chicago Pirates 1890
Cincinnati Kelly's Killers 1891
Cleveland Infants 1890
Indianapolis Hoosiers (Federal League) 1914
Kansas City Cowboys 1886
Newark Peppers 1915
Philadelphia Quakers 1890
Pittsburg Burghers 1890
Providence Grays 1885
Rochester Hop Bitters 1890
Seattle Pilots 1969
Syracuse Stars 1890
Toledo Maumees 1890
Baltimore Terrapins 1914

I'm going to attempt to do a March Madness style sim, with 7 game series in each round, with every Braves team on Whatifsports.com after they add the 2006 Braves. The next eight months will just fly by with that!
Best of the Best side and the Best of the Worst side. I was thinking about doing it with just the best ones, but even the terrible Braves teams had a special place in my heart, so I just made it for all of them.

Good idea! I'll do that with the Red Sox.

Good idea! I'll do that with the Red Sox.
Should we assign a team to sim for everyone who wants to particpate, and then make a league out of the teams that win?
Erik Bedard
09-14-2006, 02:14 PM
We could do that.
Williamsburg2599
09-14-2006, 02:17 PM
Sounds good, what should the format/rules be? I'll start making a list of teams who only had one season and are automatically in the league...
Williamsburg2599

Teams that are automaticaly in:
Brooklyn Gladiators 1890
Brooklyn Wonders 1890
Cincinnati Kelly's Killers 1891
Cleveland Infants 1890
Indianapolis Hoosier (Federal League) 1914
Kansas City Cowboys 1886
Newark Peppers 1915
Philadelphia Quakers 1890
Pittsburg Burghers 1890
Providence Grays 1885
Rochester Hop Bitters 1890
Seattle Pilots 1969
Syracuse Stars 1890
Toledo Maumees 1890
Congrats to those teams ^, There are TONS of teams that have had short "careers" and could easily be run, if anyone wants to call "dibs" on simming those tournys(once we get the rules set)

For some teams you could make it easier by limiting it to the teams that won the WS if nyou want.
Williamsburg2599
09-16-2006, 10:02 AM
A team can be great and not win the WS and then two years down the line ber horrible and still win. So what are the rules? 7 game series for each teams? random match-ups? what about teams that have an odd number of teams?
Erik Bedard

I started the Red Sox last night. I'm taking six teams from each decade by playing them against each other plus four wild cards and doing a 7-game series bracket style.
So far:
1901 def. 1902, 4-3
1903 def. 1901, 4-1
1904 def. 1901, 4-2

Alrighte, that sounds good, if anyone wants to do all teams, then thats fine too. I'm going to start doing the mop-up teams, (the ones with only two or three teams) the teams with the best records get to skip the wildcard (for the teams with an odd amount of teams)

1901 Red Sox def. 1905 Red Sox 4-3
Game 7 was a classic, with 1901's future HoF 3Bman Jimmy Collins robbing Kip Selbach of a hit to end the game with runners on second and third and 1901 up 4-3. Collins also went 3-4 with two doubles.
In Game 3 against the 1906 Red Sox, the 1901 set an Ultimate Sim record by scoring 22 runs!
Boxscore: http://whatifsports.com/mlb/boxscore.asp?GameID=28810315&ad=1e4
In Game 4, they broke the record they set in the previous contest by scoring an astounding TWENTY-FOUR runs!
Boxscore: http://whatifsports.com/mlb/boxscore.asp?GameID=28810319&ad=1
Needless to say, the 1901 club took the series in five games.
The 1901 Red Sox barely avoided humiliation by winning in Game 7 against the 1907 club after winning the first three games and dropping the next three.
In a largely uneventful series, the 1901 Red Sox fell to the 1908 club in five games.

Has anybody ever taken EVERY SINGLE team in EVERY SINGLE year of EVERY SINGLE pro season and made one massive league to see who would win? I'm talking every team plays every team atleast once, and play-offs are made bigger to adjust for the large amount of teams. I think it would be interesting to see some of the odd stuff that happend and if a team that you think would win (like the 27 yanks) would lose. I assume someone could use whatifsports.com. If this has been done, everyone have a link? If not, does anyone have the time/patience or cool software to do it? If so, GO WORCHESTER RUBYLEGS!

If it makes you feel any better, I'll have 28 Boston teams in the 64-team "Best" bracket. :) All 13 Milwaukee teams are there, since none finished below .500. So that makes 23 Atlanta teams. This year's Braves, they'll probably finish below .500, but I need to make sure they do, because the 1901 Beaneaters (69-69) are the cutoff point; the lowest #16 seed in the Best tourney. Anyone lower than at is automatically in the "Worst" bracket. I seeded by World Series, pennants, divisions, all combined with winning percentage, and then just plain winning percentage, in that order.
The only exception was that I didn't want the 1999 Braves being a #1 seed and the 1996 Braves a #2 seed, so I switched their places.
If the 2006 Braves do manage to get an 81-81 record, they'll be tied with the 1968 Braves, who have the same record, and that will bump the 1901 Beaneaters out of the Best bracket. The 1932 Braves finished 79-79.
Several Braves teams are in both the Best and Worst brackets because I'm including everyone from 1885-2006, even the legendary 1935 Boston Braves.

A #1 seed. The 1995 Braves are the top seed, the 1957 Braves are the next and the 1914 Braves are after them. The 1996 Braves are the last #1 seed. All the other Braves teams who reached the World Series but did not win it are right after the '96 team. Then it is the teams who reached the NLCS but did not go further, then it is the teams who reached the NLDS but didn't go further, etc. etc. :crazy

For my big project, unrelated to this one, for those who would like to know, this season's Braves could be tied with the 1967 Braves at worst and be tied with the 1984 Braves at best, putting them in the low #2 seed to lowest #3 seed range in the "Best of the Worst" side of the tournament.

(I notice that I accidently started Mark Lemke instead of Jeff Treadway the last couple of series because my memory slipped. But the result still would have stood probably, so it will be rectified in this series. Besides, think of it as Mark putting in his two cents to give the 1991 Braves the title of Best Braves Team of All Time. :) )

The 1991 Atlanta Braves is the team that put professional sports in Atlanta permanently on the map. The Braves, Falcons and Hawks all had fleeting moments of success, but little results to show when it came time for the postseason. Not anymore.
Otis Nixon set a Braves club record with 72 stolen bases in the campaign, Terry Pendleton won the NL MVP while leading the league in batting average (beating Tony Gwynn!!) and Ron Gant led the team in both homers (32) and RBI (105) and young Tom Glavine won 20 games, finished third in ERA and became the club's first Cy Young Award winner and just the second in Braves history (Warren Spahn).
The 1948 Braves had the best pitching staff in the National League, anchored by NL win leader and team ERA leader Johnny Sain. You may have heard "Spahn and Sain and two days of rain", but that doesn't mean it was just them. Vern Bickford and Bill Voiselle contributed their fair share.
Bob Elliott, the 1947 NL MVP, led the league with 131 walks and led the team with 23 homers and 100 RBI. Jeff Heath was the only other Brave who had 20 or more homers (20), and Earl Torgeson, had ten. No one else had more than that. Shortstop Alvin Dark won Rookie of the Year as best rookie in the major leagues, batting .322.
With these being special games, I'll bring them to you one by one with a little write-up for each. :)
EDIT: Heh heh heh, I said "little". Yeah right! ;)

The Atlanta Braves fans were ready for war with their new Tomahawk Chop and war chant. Undoubtedly, the '48 Braves hadn't seen anything like it.
The game started out slowly, no one getting a hand up on the other, with Johnny Sain and Tom Glavine trading goose eggs in the first.
Then the second inning came. Bob Elliott led off with a double, Jim Russell walked and then Alvin Dark hit into a fielder's choice, with Russell being forced at second. Phil Masi then stepped up and slapped a single to Justice in right, scoring Elliott. The Atlanta boys barely had time to adjust when Sain lined a hard single past Jeff Blauser to make it 2-0. Eddie Stanky lined out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the second, David Justice hit a single and stole second and took third on Sid Bream's grounder to Stanky. Jeff Blauser then chopped a grounder back to the mound. Justice tried to surprise Sain by dashing for the plate, but Sain quickly relayed to Masi, who tagged Justice out. Greg Olson took a hit for the team, but Glavine lined out to second to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third, Otis Nixon singled to right, stole second, and then advanced to third on Jeff Treadway's flyball that pressed Tommy Holmes to the wall in right. Ron Gant then grounded out to Stanky and Nixon raced home to make it 2-1.
The top of the next inning proved to be profitable. A Jim Russell walk, a Dark single that Bream was unable to beat him to the bag and a Masi walk loaded the bases with none out. Sain then grounded a ball to Bream whothrew home, but it was high and Olson had to leap to prevent it from going over his head. All runners were safe. Stanky then hit a grounder up the middle that Treadway attempted to dive and grab, but he had been playing too much towards first. Nixon got the ball back in quickly to prevent another runner from scoring and making it more than 3-1. Glavine struck out Holmes for the first out. Earl Torgeson then tattooed a ball that Bream snatched out of the air to the delight of the crowd. Maybe the Braves were going to get out of this without any further damage...
With a full count on Bob Elliott, Glavine unleashed one of his patented corner change-ups. The umpire said nothing. Ball four. 4-1. The crowd wasn't happy and neither was Glavine. Tom was so upset, he grooved a fastball to Heath, who hit a dying quail to left that landed in front of Gant and drove in two men to increase the lead to 6-1. By then, Bobby Cox had had enough, yanking the young left-hander in favor of veteran Rick Mahler, on his second tour of duty with the Braves. Russell then grounded out softly to Treadway, ending the threat. But the damage was done and the crowd was a little quieter.
Sain set the Braves down 1-2-3 and Mahler allowed just a single on his end. In the bottom of the fifth, Sain struck out Greg Olson, but couldn't get his opposing mound mate out, Mahler poking a single in front of Ellott and into left. Nixon singled and then Treadway hit a hard single to Heath. On his horse, Mahler scored from second to make it 6-2. Gant drew a walk to load the bases with one out and Pendleton going to the plate sent the fans into a tizzy. That died down quick, as batting champ Pendleton chopped a ball in front of the plate that Masi grabbed, threw to Dark to just get Gant at second, and Dark fired to Elliott to first to get the slow Pendleton and end the '91 Braves' comeback hopes for now.
In the bottom of the sixth, Justice grounded out and then Bream singled. Blauser then smacked a ball that bounced on the warning track and over the wall. The fans cheered louder again. But Olson grounded to Elliott and the runners had to hold. With two out, Cox sent up a pinch hitter, Keith Mitchell, to try to drive the two runners in. But he grounded out to Elliott too, the crowd groaning as another opportunity was wasted.
The top of the seventh saw late-1991 acquisition Mike Bielecki come into the game for the Braves. Heath walked and then Russell sent Justice to the wall in right. Dark then hit a flyball single to left that plopped in front of Gant to put men on first and third. Masi then walked to load the bases with one out. Bielecki struck out Sain, but then faltered on Stanky, going 3-0 on him. The next pitch was nowhere near, and Heath trotted home with the 7th run of the day for the '48 Braves. Bielecki was then able to work Holmes to a full count, and then fired a fastball that seemed to be on the outside corner. No dice. Ball four. The Atlanta fans then started to boo as the 8th run was scored. They booed again after Torgeson struck out, but that was mostly heaped at the umpire and not Bielecki. 8-2 '48 Braves.
In the next two half-innings, Gant and Elliott traded solo shots. In the Atlanta half of the eighth, three straight singles by Bream, Blauser and Olson with one out loaded the bases. The fans cheered, but they all knew the Atlanta boys had failed at this situation all night long. Veteran Lonnie Smith came up to pinch-hit, and he hit a dribbler to Dark at short. Stanky got the force on Olson, but Greg's takeout slide was enough to throw Stanky's velocity on the throw off and Smith beat the throw to first, scoring Bream. Nixon then slapped a single to right, scoring Blauser and making it 10-5. Sain was still out there this whole time, and Billy Southworth made no effort to go out and get the fireballer. He ended up being right as Treadway grounded out to Stanky.
Tony Castillo came on for the '91 Braves in the ninth and held the '48 Braves to just Stanky's 2-out double. Johnny Sain took the mound for the '48 Braves in the bottom of the 9th. He had thrown around 120 pitches, but he was still out there. Three weak flyouts by Gant, Pendleton and Justice sealed the deal and the '48 Braves celebrated their Game 1 victory.

The Atlanta fans returned to Fulton County Stadium ready to cheer for their Braves. They hadn't forgotten about yesterday's loss and they were eager to cheer on their boys to get revenge.
Steve Avery, the 1991 NLCS MVP, started for the '91 Braves and Vern Bickford was his opposing mound mate.
The first hit of the day came on a Terry Pendleton single leading off the second inning. He didn't score because there were no more hits that inning. Avery had it going well, retiring the Boston order once through, getting strikeouts of Bob Elliott and Bickford.
In the top of the fourth, Eddie Stanky got ahold of an Avery curve and drove it to left. Ron Gant ran to the wall and scaled it, but he watched the ball go over his glove for a home run. Avery escaped further damage, allowing just a walk to Elliott.
The Atlanta fans sat back and soaked in a super pitching duel. Through six innings there were just four hits: Phil Masi, Jeff Blauser and Terry Pendleton singles and the Stanky home run. The '48 Braves were up 1-0 going into the seventh. Avery was still out there to the delight of every Atlanta fan, player and coach. This was exactly what they needed: a great start to build on.
After an Elliott groundout, Jef Heath hit a double in the right field field gap. Jim Russell then poked at a ball in shallow center, but Otis Nison was playing a llittle more shallow and he caught the ball easily. The star rookie Alvin Dark then slapped a single to left field, scoring Heath and making it 2-0. Phil Masi finished the inning by chopping a ball in front of the plate that Greg Olson gloved and tossed to first base for the out.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Braves had Nixon on second, with a stolen base and Ron Gant on first with a walk and one out, but Pendleton flied out to left, taking Heath to the warning track and then Justice flied out to Heath again, but a bit more closer to the infield. Heath gloved it easily.
In the top of the 8th, with one out, Stanky walked and Tommy Holmes then singled into scenter, getting Eddie to third. Torgeson then smacked a long drive deep to right, but Gant gloved it in front of the track. Stanky tagged up and scored and it was 3-0. That much closer to taking a 2-0 series lead. Elliott smacked a single and Heath walked to load the bases with two out. But Jim Russell flied out to Nixon in shallow center to end the threat, the fans applauding and cheering.
The Atlanta fans were uneasy and the cheers had murmurrs in between in the bottom of the eighth. If they were going to come back, they had to right now. It was Ernie White's job too keep the Braves off of the board.
A walk to Sid Bream didn't help him. Blauser then followed that with a single, sending Bream to second. The cheers rang through the ballpark as Greg Olson stood at the plate. White was able to get him to pop out to shallow left. Now, decision time. Does Cox go with Steve Avery, who has been relatively succesful today, or go with a pinch hitter to try to get the runners in with one out? Answer: Keith Mitchell. And he drew a walk. The cheers were deafening as Otis Nixon came to the plate. Sure, he probably wouldn't hit a home run, but he can hit! And he sure did hit, sending a single into center field. plating Bream and making the score 3-1. Jeff Treadway came up and worked the count full. The last pitch bounced at the plate, making it 3-2, and turning Fulton County Stadium into a buzzing bowl of hope. Ron Gant worked the count as well. White was frazzed enough to throw a ball-three pitch over Masi's head, walking Gant and tying the score. The Braves fans were at their loudest than at any other time in this series!
Southworth finally pulled out White, sending in Nels Potter. Pendleton then chopped a ball to second base. Stanky was able to get the ball to dark, but the transition was a little slow, and that was enough for Pendleton to beat the throw to first! Nixon scored and the Braves had a 4-3 lead!
David Justice worked a walk to load the bases again. Unforunately, Bream bounced out to Stanky.
In the top of the ninth, Alejandro Pena came in to close the game. At least the Braves fans in the stands hoped he would. His first challenge: Alvin Dark. He singled to right. Next up, pinch hitter Mike McCormick. He grounded to short and Blauser threw to Treadway to get Dark, but that's all they got. One down. Pinch hitter Bill Salkeld walked up to the plate and promptly popped a ball into right. Justice got under it and caught it easily, sending cheers from the stands. One more out and the series would be tied!
Stanky came up again. With a 1-2 count, he poked a single past a diving Treadway, getting McCormick to third. With the cheers ringing in everyone's ears, Tommy Holmes came up to try to get the Boston Braves back into this. He hit a sharp grounder to second base, but this time, Treadway was there to get it. He threw to Bream and the stadium exploded in cheers. Series all knotted up at one!

It was time to move on to Braves Field in 1948. To be sure, the Atlanta boys knew about people dressing nicely for baseball games, with suits and fedoras for the men and dresses for the ladies, but they had never seen so many of them in one place, outside of a church. :p
Today's pitching matchup featured Bill Voiselle, who wore 96 in honor of his hometown, Ninety-Six, S. C., for the home Braves against veteran Charlie Leibrandt. This was one game that Leibrandt did not want to blow. After giving up the walk-off home run to Kirby Puckett in the 1991 World Series, he didn't want to blow this opportunity. Bill Voiselle didn't want to do badly in this game either. He lost a one-run affair with Cleveland in Game 6, which gave the Indians the World Series, and he wanted to do better himself.
Well, sorry, Bill. Really sorry. Otis Nixon led off with a smart single, stole second and then raced around to score when Jeff Treadway's smack found its way up the middle for a base hit. Next up was Ron Gant. After two curves, Voiselle tried a fastball and Gant just crushed it, the ball landing far beyond the left field fence, giving the Atlanta Braves a quick 3-0 lead.
But they weren't done.
Terry Pendleton followed with a single and then David Justice also singled. Pendleton raced for third, but Tommy Holmes made an excellent throw to Elliott, beating Pendleton by about two feet. Sid Bream then hit a seeing-eye single that made its way past Alvin Dark and got Justice over to third since he was on his horse. Jeff Blauser struck out, but Greg Olson lined a ball hard to left center that found a gap in the spacious outfield and it was a two-run double. 5-0. Billy Southworth was fuming and some of the fans were too. As a result, Voiselle was yanked and Red Barrett replaced him. Charlie Leibrandt popped out to shallow left, where Dark corralled the ball to end the inning.
A Holmes single was all the '48 Braves mustered in the next inning. Nixon singling and stealing second, causing the Boston fans to murmurr in dread. This was excatly how the last inning started! But Treadway grounded out, Gant popped out and Pendleton struck out. Phew!
With two out in the bottom of the inning, Dark hit a single and Phil Masi hit a flyball that found its way to the wall, scoring Dark. But Masi was only able to get to second. Pitcher Red Barrett lined out to Pendleton to end the inning, but there was finally a 1 on the home team's line on the scoreboard.
Justice led off the next inning with a single, but then Bream hit a grounder to Elliott, who was able to get the ball to Eddie Stanky for the out at second, but it was so slow that even Bream could get to first. Jeff Blauser then followed with a single, but then Greg Olson popped out to Stanky in shallow center and Leibrandt grounded out to Elliott.
Stanky and Holmes hit back-to-back doubles leading off the inning, Holmes' ball smacked right in front of Pendleton so hard, he barely had time to move. Leibrandt buckled down after that, getting Torgeson and Elliott to fly out to Gant and Nixon and even snaring a hot line drive by Jeff Heath that surely would have been a single.
Nixon led off the fourth with another single, but Treadway struck out and Gant hit into a double play. Time to answer for the '48 Braves? Well, with two out, Masi hit another long double and pinch-hitter Clint Conatser walked. Stanky got a huge rise out of the crowd with his long drive to center, but Nixon gloved it on the warning track.
Bobby Hogue was the new Boston pitcher. Pendleton led off with a single and seeing that no one was really paying any attention to him, he was told to steal by Bobby Cox after Justice flew out to Jim Russell. Pendleton actually made it. Sid Bream hit a hard one, but it was right at Dark. Blauser then hit a blooper towards center that found a spot on the green, Pendleton racing around to score and make it 6-2 Atlanta. Oslon then hit a blooper to center, but this time, Russell was waiting for it after playing more shallow.
The game was halfway done and Atlanta was still up 6-2. Things looked good for Leibrandt. Then again, don't count your chickens before they hatch. Holmes popped out to Bream at first and Torgeson flied out to Gant. Elliott then singled and Jeff Heath lined a shot down the right field line that bounced around in the outfield, letting him get to third. Then Russell clobbered a ball that even got over Nixon's head, going to the wall and he had himself a double. Dark then lined a single over Blauser's head and just like that, it was 6-5. Bobby Cox hated to do it, but he brought in Rick Mahler to relieve Leibrandt. Masi smacked one immediately off of the new Atlanta pitcher, but Gant gloved it in front of the warning track.
In the top of the 6th, Treadway hit a double with two out, but didn't get farther than that. In the bottom of the inning, Stanky hit a single with one out and then tried to steal second on the next pitch. But Greg Olson suspected that, called a pitchout and nailed Stanky with a perfect throw and tag by Treadway. Holmes lined out after that.
The 7th inning was quick, as both teams went one-two-three. Blauser led off the 8th with a walk, but Olson lined out to Stanky, so Jeff couldn't move. Mahler, who was still pitching well, tried to bunt Blauser over, but Hogue pounced on the ball and started a 1-4-3 double play. Inning over.
Mahler continued his mastery, getting the '48 Braves 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. In the 9th, Nixon had a familiar start to the inning: he singled and stole second. He advanced to third on Treadway's groundout to Torgeson, and Hogue looked like he was going to get out of it when Gant grounded out to Elliott, but Pendleton hit a smooth, clean single to right, scoring Nixon. Justice added another single in front of Heath and Pendleton boldly went to third and reached, but Bream struck out to end the threat.
The fans cheered on their '48 Braves as Bill Salkeld came up to pinch-hit for Hogue, but the only hit the Boston nine had against Mahler was a single by Stanky in the sixth. Salkeld grounded to Bream at first for the first out. Stanky then flied out to Justice in right and Holmes grounded weakly back to Mahler, who tossed to Bream at first and the '91 Braves celebrated taking a 2-1 series lead.

However you want. :) Since the Rockies have existed for only 12 seasons, I suggest waiting until they put the 2006 teams up and pick the top 8 teams and doing a tournament like mine. But that's your decision, not mine. :)

Here's my tournament- too many box scores to keep track of.
I started with 3 leagues.
League 1- 1962-1977
League 2- 1978-1993
League 3- 1994-2006
Leagues 1 and 2 were a standard 16 team tournament.
1-
1962 beats 1977 3-2
1976 beats 1963 3-2
1975 beats 1964 4-2
1974 beats 1965 8-6
1973 beats 1966 3-2
1967 beats 1972 4-2
1971 beats 1968 2-1
1969 beats 1970 4-2
For the semifinals the teams were randomly shuffled.
1962 beats 1971 13-4
1969 beats 1976 3-2
1967 beats 1973 3-2
1974 beats 1975 4-2 in 11 inn.
Same for the finals.
1969 beats 1974 5-0
1962 beats 1967 4-2
1969 beats 1962 11-1
I took the winner and the loser in each league and placed them into "The Big 6" Championship League.
2-
1978 beats 1993 7-1
1979 beats 1992 4-3
1980 beats 1991 10-2
