2006 was another dissapointing year with some brightspots and some not so bright. lets start with the neagatives. the bullpen finished with the second worst era only to the royals. veteran guys we brought in to add deth and leadership didnt pay off such as todd williams, tim brydak, latroy hawkins. young guys where thrown into the mix such as jim hoey, chris britton and showed some promising things. chris ray was the bright spot with 32 saves, hopefully he will build on it next year.

the rotation- saw good things from erik bedar 15-11 but dont think he is a number one guy. kris benson was clearly better then his record indicated. he could have won 15 games but the team gave him no run support at all. rodrigo lopez and bruce chen who were suppose to have good years after last years performace didnt even win 10 games combined and ended the year in the bullpen. adam loewen after two rocky starts finished the year strong and had a winning record vs the yanks (2-1) hayden penn couldnt find his minor league form and didnt record a win but remember he is only 21 years old and one mroe year with mazzone will help.

infield- melvin mora has a average year, but didnt show what we wanted after we signed him to that mulit year deal. miguel tejada had a mvp type year but i still believe his best value to this team would be in another uniform next year. brian roberts after having what some considered a career ending injury had a solid year. roman hernandez was the best offseason move we made. he had a career year and handled our staff very good. kevin millar had the year we expected but i dont think he did enought to come back. chris gomez i like him considering he can play 1st, 2b when needed.

outfield-jay gibbons best value is his bat not his glove. he cant play the OF nor 1st he is the dh nothing else. nick markaksis was solid after a rought outing, was the best rookie postinal player in all of baseball and sured up his job for next year. corey patterson after battling injury came on strong and when he was on the base path was always a threat. he is very underrated when it comes to his glove and outfield arm. brandon fahey did what we expected off the bench and i think he sured up a job off the bench next year. id also like us to keep newhan who can play all OF positions and any INF position when needed.

the oriole top 5 things they need to do going into the 07 season

1-starting pitcher
2-starting pitcher
3-bullpen
4-lf
5-1b

What? Bedard not a no.1 guy? What?

I think just one SP is really necessary, to go with Bedard, Loewen, Benson, and Penn. A decent bullpen is really more of an issue than pitching, IMO. And we need a big-hitting 1B-man more than a LF-er.

Do you really think Kris Benson was better than his stats? He had a 4.82 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and only K'd 88 in 182 IP...He's lucky he even won 11 games with those crappy stats.

benson had no run support when he took the mound. he pitched way better then his record indicates. also he threw two complete games and loss both by less then a run

no i dont think bedard at this point in his career is a number one guy. why rush him when he has had one solid year in his career. drop in back in the rotation with no pressure and he will strive better. then if he continues to have solid years then we can rethink him as a number one guy. right now i dont think he is. loewen is still young, benson might not be back depending on if we pick up his option, and penn struggled and still needs work. we need two solid pitchers for this rotation bottom line

remember what happened after rodrigo had one solid year, we gave him the nod as number one and look what happened. lets try and avoid this

I agree with the assessment that we need just one (stud) SP... but, would we assume under said conditions that Cabrera has been traded for someone? He still shows more promise to me than Penn even though he's been slow to develop.

And I wouldn't mind trotting Bedard out #2 at all, provided we get a SP in front of him who is a proven front-line pitcher.

For example, Zito-Bedard-Benson-Loewen-Penn. I'd put Benson #3 and Loewen #4 to split up the lefties under that scenario.

Run support only affects a pitcher's win total - not their ERA, WHIP, and K total.

Benson was good in stretches -- he could have won around 15. But he could have also lost around 15.

If you eliminate Bedard's ugly 1-7 stretch, he's 14-3 with an ERA about 2. He's among the best in the game. Now, if we get Zito, then Bedard is a great #2. But with the rotation we have now, he's the undisputed #1.

I'm with you. Bedard showed us this year that he has what it takes to be a number 1 guy. The problem with Bedard is....he's a shy quiet guy (and not a total a-hole) like most pitchers, so he doesn't come off as a #1 guy. Also, because the O's don't have the offense like most teams, he doesn't get as many wins as he should. Any other team, Bedard would have had 20 wins.....

Well, not ANY other team... if he pitched for KC, TB, or PIT, he'd probably be about 13-13.
