Boris ""Babe" Martin, one the last three remaining veterans of the 1944 St. Louis Browns' only pennant winning club, celebrated his 87th birthday two days ago. Babe was born on March 28, 1920 in Seattle, Washington.
Babe had a major league career that extended over parts (and mostly small parts) of six seasons (1944-46, 1948-49, 1953). Babe only played 2 games for the Browns during his 1944 rookie season and 1945 saw him play in 54 games, the only time his big league career hit double figures for games played. Martin played in 69 MLB games totally. 63 of these contests were played a Brown; 6 were played as a member of the Red Sox in 1948-49. Out of the big leagues from 1950-52, Babe returend to play 4 final games for the 1953 Browns. His career big league BA, in which he played played mainly as an outfielder, was .214 (44/206) with 13 runs scored, 18 RBI, and 2 HR's.
Babe Martin is a fairly regular attendee of the annual Browns banquets in St. Louis and he lives in retirement fairly close to St. Louis. Babe, we are hoping to see you at the July 25, 2007 banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club. Please forgive us for this late birthday wish. Hope your natal day was a happy one.
PS: In case you are wondering, the other two surviving members of the '44 American League Champion Browns are Don Gutteridge and Frank Mancuso.
