View Full Version : 1971 Free Agent Auction

01-18-2009, 07:44 AM
--Welcome to the 1971 Free Agent auction. The live Premium Free Agent auction will commence at 8PM EST on Friday, January 23. HTD bids must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to that - 8PM EST, 1/22) to be honored.
--Ten players will be auctioned live. First priority will go to HTD players with bids of 5M or more. If there are openings in the 10 available slots after that they will go to the best expiring contracts with no HTD available
--Players in the PFA will be auctioned off one at a time. Once those players are signed the auction will convert over to open bidding on the secondary free agents (and I think some outstanding players will end up there this year). Bids may be placed freely from the end of the PFA until 8 PM, Tuesday, January 27. The final hour of the secondary auction you will be limited to one bid per post. All bids must list the full name of the player to be counted. The highest bid posted as of 9PM takes the player.
--Teams short of 40 players at this point may sign as many players as they need to make up the difference on first come, first served minimum wage deals. All teams should be at exactly 40 players by midnight EST on Wednesday, January 28. Those who end up over 40 at the close of the auction may not sign additional players and must cut down to 40. Once play begins it is permitted to sign additonal players - one after each series - as long as you have the cap space.
--If you can't make the PFA and want a player please get a bid list to someone who can proxy for you. I will be of limited availability this year as I'm bidding for two and both the Knigts and Gamblers have significant cap space to play with. If you want me to proxy for you all I will be able to do is post your maximum bid on the player. You may be able to find a better proxy with a capped out owner who plans on being there for the auction.
--All teams must post their current roster size and money committted prior to submitting a bid in the free agent auction. There are severe penalties for biddding over your available cap space.

The Legends have 77.75M committed for 36 players, leaving 22.25M for four players.

Including a HTD offer of 6.5M to Nelson Briles, the River Rats have 71M committed to 24 players, leaving 29M for 16 players. 9M needed to top the bid on Briles.
Also, I'm still looking to pick up one or two players in the rookie draft for the Rats, so these totals could change by 500K if I manage to get two more.
Edited on 1-21-09 to reflect the signing of one more rookie.
Edited again on 1-22-09 to reflect the reduced bid to Nelson Briles.

I'm in pretty much the same situation as Mark. I'll be bidding for the Legends and River Rats. If I keep Jenkins, my bidding will be very minimal and I could post some bids for someone, but I'll be trying to obtain at least 17 players and maybe 18 for the Rats, so I probably couldn't do much more than post some top offers, but if that's all you need I sure plan on being here.

--Or exactly enough to overbid on Jenkins and round out the 40 man with minimum wage guys:D. Actually if I sign a pitcher in the PFA (probably not Fergie;)) I'd withdraw my HTD offer to McGlothlin. He would be my 5th starter at this time, but I wouldn't mind upgrading.
--We are prohibited from bidding the money offered to our HTD players. If you have a player in the PFA you can't withdraw that bid after Thursday when those players are locked in. You may withdraw offers in the secondary auction up until the last day - call it midnight EST next Monday.
--For the PFA I'll auction all the HTD guys first, highest bid (at this point Jenkins) going first.

This is actually good, since if I get overbid and end up losing him I'll know it right away and be ready to bid on the other pitchers.;)
I went as high as I thought I could afford for him, especially with several other good pitchers coming on the market this off season. My inability to trade Willie McCovey has hurt for sure. I'd certainly entertain any reasonable offer for McCovey at this point.

For 1971 the Dust Bunnies have 33 players under contract for $59.75. We therefore have up to $40.75 to spend on our remaining 7 players. Anyone wishing to check our roster and contracts may do so either at Post #6 in the Dust Bunnies' Thread or Post #26 in the Rosters' Thread.

--I wish I'd given a little more thought to my own position before posting the order I intended to auction the players off in. I think it is the fairest way, since you and other high bidders willknow if that money is spent before the lesser players go off the market, but I'd rather be able to plunk my whole bundle down on him after having a chance to get a good player or two at a bargain. He is the best pitcher for this year and that is my main concern, but going the overbid on him would leave me nothing (except minimum wage) to fill the platoon, bench and bullpen spots - or possible upgrades on okay players penciled in now. I'm going to be very reluctant to make that kind of committment to the first player on the block.

The Legends have announced that they have received communication from Bob Locker indicating that he is unhappy with the contract offered him and has decided to not accept it and pursue free agency to see what he can get on the open marker. Legends management have thus decided to withdraw their offer to Locker and have instead increased their offer to Fergie Jenkins. The Legends have now offered Jenkins 20.25M to stay, thus increasing the minimum bid for any other team to 24.5M.
I have edited my previous post, and this now puts the Legends at 77.75M for 36 players without Jenkins. Counting the Jenkins offer, the Legends are at 98M for 37 players.
Bob Locker is a free agent now with no HTD bid at this point.
Mark, would also please edit the PFA post to reflect the new offer to Jenkins? Thanks!
At that price you might just keep him Lew. I thought you were going to let Jenkins loose and focus on Seaver next offseason...

Actually, Seaver isn't a free agent until after 1972. By that time, I see where I can free up at least 28M so I should be able to make a decent bid for him at that point. I'm concentrating on keeping those two and rebuilding the rest of the team. I've already got Burt Hooton, who starts to produce next year, and Don Gullett, who's signed through 1975. Don Baylor and Cesar Cedeno should keep the OF going, although I hope to resign Reggie Smith. Santo still has three good years left, and Freehan has five. I picked up John Mayberry via trade to cover first base in 72 and 73. With two picks in the first round in 1972 and four in the first round in 1973, I should be able to keep the team going on the cheap for a while - except for Jenkins, if I keep him! The only problems I see on the horizon are at shortstop and second base.

As of that time bids may no longer be submitted or adjusted (they can still be withdrawn up until the biding opens for PFA players or Monday for secondary auction players. Any HTD player who hasn't received a bid by the deadline will be an unrestricted free agent. Still waiting on the Leafs, who have a tough decision with 2 stars - Catfish Hunter and Bobby Murcer - eligible and very little cap space. Also on the Wranglers who have Rudy May eligble.

--Jenkins is worth a king's ransom this year, but he isn't a 20+ pitcher on a long term deal IMO. I was considering topping you orginal bid and then buying him out next year as part of my rebuild/high draft choice stragey for 72. I can't do that at 24M and I doubt he makes sense for anybody else at that price. The advantage for the Legends, of course, is they get him at leass than it would cost anybody else. 20.25 probaly does lock Fergie in, but it might not be enough for Catfish. He is probably worth a little more to the Legends than he would be to anybody else anyway. I know I'm willing to pay alittle premium to keep players who have been important to the Knights.
I for one think the program is going to treat Jenkins very well through his "lean" years whether he stays in Shea stadium or goes to an even less-friendly HR park. In real life, he lost a lot of balls over the Wrigley Field fences but his WHIP remained consistently among the best in the league. I have Jenkins and Hunter at a comparable value.

I figure him to go for six or seven times that, at least. --Yeah, its not an ideal alignment for me either. I said up front that I'd go high HTD bid to low and only after the 5+ HTD bids were all in would there be room for unrestricted guys. The Leafs cap issues have Hunter and Murcer going later than they should strictly on merit and that will complicate bidding for some teams, including my own. Not so much for Murcer, since there are only 3 position players in the PFA and Murcer will be the first outfielder on the block.
--Hunter is at least arguably the best SP on the block though and going up after Jenkins and Carlton plus 2nd tier SP Briles and May would mean that somebody gets a bargain on them - or maybe a bargain on Hunter if teams aren't willing to risk the SP needs on waiting for the shot at him. Unless you are really targeting 1972 Carlton probably isn't worth beating the HTD bid. If you are really targeting 1971 then Jenkins could be (I am, but he is already priced out of my budget). Holtzman has an off year this season, but is a good long term bet for anybody who can afford to live with a por first season.

Hunter is IMO the best starter on the block. I would absolutely not say no to any of the other five, and may even try bidding on one or two of them, but if I could have my pick, and only get one, price being equal, I'd take Hunter.

That's actually a pretty decent buy for the first three years. Nice going, Joe. Now all you need is Willie McCovey at first to beef up that lineup....
--Its a great bargain for this year and next. Murcer is a legit MVP candidate this season and could be a contender next year as well.

When you end up with Catfish you'll one heck of a staff over there, Joe.

We haven't heard from your division mate yet. I have a hunch he's holding back until the bidding gets slow...
