Charlie Metro, a wartime Philadelphia Athletics outfielder reached age 90 today. He is the 61st current living major leaguer to reach age 90. Metro went on to hold every conceiveable job within a major league organization after his playing days were through, including brief stints as a major league manager with the Chicago Cubs in the early '60s and with the Kansas City Royals in in the 70s.
Metro's entire major league playing career consisted of three years during World War Two. He spent a season and a half with the Detroit Tigers (1943-44) and about the same length of time with the Philadelphia Athletics (1944-45). He hit .193 lifetime in 171 games.

Shortly after Charlie was born in Pennsylvania, his parents, who were recent immigrants to America, chose to Anglicize and shorten their family name. Charlie's name at birth was Charles Moreskonich.

Charlie Metro's book SAFE AT HOME is truly wonderful. Metro is a little like Forrest Gump. Not tremendously important in and of himself but someone who was there for many significant events.
