Discuss anything and everything about the St. Louis Browns.
This thread will work best with broad contribution from all of you old Browns fans. (There's that redundancy again.) The object is to fill in the calendar pages with special or peculiar moments in Browns history. (I threw in the word "peculiar" because we had so many things happen that properly...
All right, first off I'm a fan of the Cleveland Browns. I went to Bowling Green State University... whose colors are brown and orange. We Falcons were always taught that Paul Brown adopted the Bowling Green color scheme of brown and orange for his new football team (the Browns held their first...
I'm trying to find some photos of Robison Field, which was home to the St. Louis Cardinals from 1893 to 1920 and where the American League St. Louis Browns played from 1902-1908. Have any of you ever come across any online? If so, please post links (or if you have photos, please post those here)....
Can someone tell me what broadcaster called Eddie Gaedel's plate appearance over the radio (St. Louis)? Was it recorded? Thanks, Humolog
Just thought I'd post that there's a St. Louis Browns Facebook page if any of you would like to list yourselves as fans there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/St-Louis-Browns/172532436863 And don't forget the Brownies on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/stlouisbrowns Cheers, kopper
The following is an excerpt from the St Louis Globe-Democrat, September 29, 1947. It is from "The Bench Warmer" column by Robert L. Burnes. One of the nicest gestures of which we have heard in a long time is being turned by the Browns, who did not have too much to be happy about...
Anyone who collects Browns autographs thru the mail might like to know Chuck Stevens and Roy Sievers are still signing. In fact Stevens answered a few questions and signature is still strong.
With the passing of Bobby Bragan this week, this raises a question: “How many managers from the 1950s are still living?”. The only two I can think of off the top of my head are the Browns’ Marty Marion and Solly Hemus who took over the Cards’ reins at Age 35 in 1959. There are probably others…...
Here is another interesting tidbit about the Browns nickname from The Sporting News (upper left hand corner of page - "Moniker"). Note the drawing of the "mascot." It is reminiscent to the version that Bill Veeck used on the uniforms (sleeve patch) in 1952 and 1953.
Sent this in to Seamheads.com for submission, but here's a sneak peek for you guys. Carl Weilman had about as unlikely a major-league career as one could expect. First, he was the son of a Swiss immigrant who wanted his son to do nothing to have to do with baseball. “I used to get more...
Roberto Alomar's non-election to the Hall of Fame day means the "race" between Oriole HofFers and Brownie HofFers stands at Browns 15, Orioles 12. The Browns total includes one owner and the O's total includes one manager. Off the subject a little bit. The three top vote-getters today, Andre...
Here is an interesting article from The Sporting News about a reunion of the 1922 Browns in which they played a 3-inning exhibition game against the 1937 team. It's a team that you don't hear too much about nowadays but the 1922 near-miss pennant winners were dear to the hearts of the St Louis fan...
Following up on a previous post on how Ty Cobb was nearly a Brown, here's another involving Lou Gehrig. Gehrig spent about half of the 1923 season with the Yankees, albeit mostly watching from the bench (he actually debuted against the Browns on June 15, entering on defense in the ninth inning...
Was wondering if anyone on this site had any information about the St. Louis Browns Farm Teams in the 40's. I am trying to piece together my Father's Baseball Career after WWII. According to my Mother (who does'nt remember much) and some Photographs she has, she said that my Father was in the St....
It is interesting to note that the Orioles have now spent as many consecutive seasons below .500 as the St. Louis Browns did (12) . Since last year’s winning percentage is the second-lowest the team has posted during the 12-year run, 13 seems a likely prospect for the O's. Having a winning...
After the 1926 season, both Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker were involved in a gambling scandal and, long story short, both were basically kicked off their existing teams (Tigers and Indians) but allowed to sign elsewhere. They weren't true free agents, as they were property of their clubs technically,...
Why was Bob Dillinger traded or sold from the Browns? Did the Browns get a cash offer they couldn't refuse? He led the league in steals three times and hits once batting over .300 at least twice. And why did he last only two years after he left the Browns? Lack of power, vision problems, major...
http://www.baseballhappenings.net/2009/11/bob-dillinger-91-former-st-louis-brown.html Former St. Louis Browns infielder and World War II veteran Bob Dillinger passed away November 7, 2009 at the age of 91. Dillinger led the American League in hits in 1948 with 207, was an A.L. All-Star in 1949,...
Our sympathies and prayers go out the family and close friends of former Brown Jim Pisoni, who died yesterday. The death of Jim Pisoni on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at the age of 79 has reduced our list of living former Browns to only 59. We are now 1 under 5 dozen, but the longevity of these...
First I'd like to say, while waiting to recieve clearence to join, I enjoyed reading the threads and seeing all the old photos. My question pertains to any other patch that the Browns might have worn on a sleeve, such as the a American League Champs 1944 or a World series patch of 44. The Cards...
Here is the recap of the second game of the Browns' 1944 season (April 19) as it appeared in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on the following day. Check back each day for a day-by-day summary of the 1944 season as the story was recounted in each day's sports section from the day one to the...
I received this great list of facts today from one of the greatest St. Louis and baseball-in-general historians I've ever met. Now I learn that Mel Freese is just a St. Louis guy to the core. These facts about St. Louis are worthy of our board - and the attention of anyone claiming to be ...
Buddy Blattner, a former major leaguer and longtime sportscaster who paired with Don Wells on the Angels' KMPC radio broadcasts from 1962 to 1968, has died. He was 89. Blattner, a St. Louis native who spent most of his life in the Midwest, died Friday of complications from lung cancer at his...
Good morning, what great photos on the Browns uniforms recently. Attached are pictures of a what I believe to be a 1940 home uniform. The uniform was worn by my father-in-law who played in the minors on numerous teams in Il and Mo. At one of the stops he was given this to wear...perhaps handed...
http://baseball-fever.com/images/attach/jpg.gif I thought some of you may enjoy seeing a bit of 1944 Browns history to go with the wonderful daily log by disgrig of the Pennant winning season. The road jersey is Mark Christman's, worn by him in both the regular season and the World Series. ...
