Have y'all already posted information on this topic? If not, does anyone know if there are stats on DP combinations?
I do not know where to put this thread. Maybe the HOF forum is not the best choice. Who contirbutes more defensively to a team: 1. An incredible, amazing, magical first baseman OR 2. A horrible, inept, slow shortstop
I'm interested in how great base stealers match up against great catcher arms and pitchers who are very good at holding runners. I looked at the past 20 all-star games, assuming this would be a reasonable approximation of talented match-ups. There were 73 stolen bases in these games. What I...
What are the dates of the "Steroid Era?" Is there a consensus on defining the start and end dates for the era? Thanks.
My dad and I have been arguing about this. He says that Alomar is better, but I agree with a lot of the experts (Bill James, for example) that say Biggio is better, but I can't exactly explain why. When you look at overall statistics, it seems that Alomar had the better career. What statistics...
What happened with this selection? This was really the first year mantle was in a steep decline defensively,so why would they award it to him in 1962. Mantle wasnt a perennial gold glover like mays who they would just give it to even if they didnt deserve it.
Has anyone conjured up any numbers that relate RBI’s to something that might be an indicator or predictor of them? FI, do XBH’s indicate RBI’s? My numbers for HS players show RBIs in a direct relationship to batting position, but I can’t see any other hitting numbers that do.
I was wondering which runs created figures are more used baseball reference.com's or the ones published in the bill james handbook? In other words which figures do u guys use here at baseball fever
Hi. Although I have been a poster here for several months, in starting a new thread that invites questions and comments, I thought it would be a good idea to open the thread with some personal introduction and an outline of the thread's purpose. My user name, Leewileyfan, comes not from some...
Disclaimer: I am not an expert sabermetrician, something that will likely become apparent very shortly. Batting average and slugging average differ in the amount of weight they give to each of the four types of hits. BA, or hits/AB, gives 1B, 2B, 3B, and HR the same weight (1), while SLG, or...
If anyone can help me confirm these before I add them to the George Brett thread, I would appreciate it. 1) Only player to have more home runs than Ks between 1955 Williams and 2004 Bonds. 2) Only player to have more than 1 RBI per game (rate qualifying season) between Williams '49 and...
If some relievers come in to face the middle of the lineup, and others get a general blend of opposing batters, then is there an easy way to estimate that? I was thinking that BABIP allowed (relative to the entire pitching staff) could show this?
I am looking for players who meet the following: a) more walks than strikeouts b) relative slugging percentage of at least 1.20 (at least 500 games)
Fan of the last decade? Post your favorite Top 25 list here in this thread: Runs Created Leaders from 2000-2009: 1......Alex Rodriguez..........1391 2......Todd Helton..............1370 3......Albert Pujols.............1364....(none in 2000) 4.......Manny Ramirez........1249 ...
This is an interesting article about the dimensions of offense. http://baseballmusings.com/?p=45427
Not sure if this should be in the Lit forum or here. Has anyone read a book called "Behind-The-Scenes Baseball: Real-Life Applications of Statistical Analysis Actually Used by Major League Teams...and Other Stories" by Doug Decatur? I'm thinking of picking it up. thanks Tom
Yesterday Retrosheet unveiled a ton of new data- splits/pitcher-batter matchups for 1921-22 NL, as well as 1957-59 AL + NL PBP info. Still big holes to be filled even in these years, but it's big progress- the first big addition to their database that I've seen in well over 6 months.
Please bear with me, as I'm sure that some of my observations and questions will be naive. I'm not on the same level as most of you in terms of sabermetrics. I just read this article : www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/yes-but-its-an-empty-.300/ My first reaction after reading the...
Not really by I noticed that Brown '06 and Mathewson '05 only got about .57-.59% of there runs credited as earned. Were scorers helping them out? or is there another explanation. What about other pitchers and top seasons?
What value is there to wins and losses? I can't think of anything solid.
I just got htis book about Gabby Hartnett, written by William F. McNeil. In the introduction, he is talking about a study that had taken place and it claimed Gabby to be the best ever. Here is the passage... I was curious if anyone knew about this study and had the information about it, how...

Anyone know say the top 10 Win Shares leaders this year in each league?
Does anyone have any numbers that show the likelihood of a runner on 3rd scoring if the pitcher uses the full windup as opposed to the stretch?
When evaluating the performance of pitchers, strikeouts are often considered as a positive. I often see 'strikeout rate' or 'walk to strikeout ratio' when people are comparing two different pitchers (even saber people do this)...heck strikeouts are even part of the 'pitching triple crown'. I am...
