    Tony Gwynn on hitting...

I've watched this video and I've talked to him in person before... his stuff is pretty basic. What do you think about his video?

Also, I was talking to someone who went and listened to Tony talk at a convention, they said that in his 45 minute scheduled time all he said is that in the off-season he would set up in a balanced position and hit the middle of a whiffle ball off of the tee. That's all he said in 5 minutes. I also herd that he is struggling as a coach. I here is team is getting owned.

Any thoughts on the video or anything about Tony Gwynn's teachings?

That was all pretty basic stuff, but I think you need to decide what type of hitter you are, or want to be.
Gwynn was like Ichiro, Gwynn hit 76 percent singles. He never once mentioned the hips in the video. And, the kid swinging did not lead with the hips. You cannot hit for power unless the hips lead the swing.

Other than that, singles hitters and power hitters swing pretty much the same, except that power hitters also use more force from the arms. They try to hit the ball hard. Gwynn, himself, said in the video that his main goal was just to get the bat on the ball, and he admitted he was not a power hitter.

So, if you want to hit like Gwynn did, then by all means, listen to everything he says. If you want to hit like Ted Williams, or Albert Pujols, then you can't pay too much attention to what Gwynn says, you need to listen to Epstein, or Yeager or others with an emphasis on power.

You can hit for power and average. Williams did it, Aaron did it, Mantle did it, Mays did it. Manny Rameriz and Albert Pujols do it.

If you want to make it to MLB, you don't have to be a able to hit 20 HR's per year, but you're probably not going to make it if you can't at least hit the ball out of the park when you make your best swing. Even David Eckstein has the ability to hit it out, although he doesn't try to and doesn't do it very often.

The problem is that in the video Gwynn isn't teaching the swing that most major leaguers use. He's teaching extension (e.g. Power V) at the point of contact and a level swing.

Just because someone was great at DOING something it doesn't mean they are good at TEACHING something. In fact, the better and more natural of a hitter than you are, the worse of a teacher you may be.
