He should have come clean years ago. What gets me is this:
No one held a gun to his head five years ago. He didn't want to talk about it then and that was the smartest move he could make. By pleading the 5th, he couldn't risk perjury. But to say he couldn't do it? That's a cop out and an excuse. Unless you're caught with a controlled substance or you test positive for use of a controlled substance, it comes down to an admission for people to truly know whether or not someone used a controlled substance. His decision was probably pressed on him by the front office. They didn't want the media circus, so it had to be done. Wow, on one level, I personally feel betrayed for all the times I defended Big Mac. However, I like many feel relieved that at least he finally came forward and confessed. The interesting part here is the time frame: "I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again. I used them on occasion throughout the nineties, including during the 1998 season."
This of course tells us that he did not use during the 1987 campaign when he hit his remarkable 49 homeruns as a rookie. I really don't know what perspective to look through in regards to the remainder of his career, but I know he had the potential to do what he did without the steroids. That is the key word-Potential.
I guess now the second guessing and finger pointing begins anew, and that is sad. Soon the Roger Clemens situation will open back up, and the venom will be worse than ever. Here comes the "I knew it!" crowd. I really hope I'm wrong about it, but I don't think so.
Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada and even my pick as the greatest pitcher ever in the game Roger Clemens, now is the time. Tell the truth! Let's please put an end to it. Let's move on for Pete's sake!

If anything, it damns his candidacy. I've seen McGwire supporters from the BBWAA say they support McGwire because nothing had been proven. Now that he's admitted it and went into detail about it, the argument for him significantly drops.
