    BBF Progressive HoF Election: 2004

    PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

    Format and Rules
    Voting Rules:
Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale. Failure to do so will see your vote disqualified.

Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).

Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but it is strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).

Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
    - Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death or the year after death if it occurs after December 1.

Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.

Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

    2004 Guide
There are 45 candidates on the 2004 ballot - 25 holdovers and 20 first timers. First time eligible players last played in 1999 (unless qualifying under the age or death rules, or were accidentally omitted on the ballot in previous years).

I haven't voted but I will in all likelihood definitely vote for:
    Boggs
    Fingers
    John
    Sutter

Murphy had my vote, the two MVPs were my excuse to myself, but wny not Lynn or Mattingly or for that matter Parker who also had a long career with counting numbers.
Dewey should get my vote, is he that far below the Kalines, Reggies et al. that he cannot go in.
Bell, Nettles and Darrell Evans are all 10-20 all time @ 3B as is Randolph at 2B...but other than a year or two for Nettles and Darrell were they really more than just good to very good.

As an aside what to do with a SS with multiple post seasons on his resume and a career OPS+ of 102 albeit in 5200 PA...yeas I mean you Mr. Blauser. Did anyone knwo he was that good? Does anyone care?

Because Murphy's peak was better than those three guys' peaks, even if you think his defense was wildly overrated during that time.

I was tempted to put Strawberry on my list because I was a fan in the 1980s, but decided to stick with just the guys that I thought actually deserve the Hall.

Jim, can you tell if the 7 days took this time?

I think I know what happened last time. For whatever reason, my browser (I think it's a Firefox setting that I'm too lazy to deal with) doesn't save my password each time I visit BBF. So if I take a long time to post something (say more than a few minutes), I get timed out and have to re-enter my login info. What I believed happened last time is that I got timed out setting up the poll, and when I re-entered my login info it re-set the time until closing from 7 days to 0. I'm actually positive this is what happened because I hit preview before posting this poll, anticipating I would get logged out. After re-entering my log-in, sure enough the 7 (which I'm positive I entered) returned to 0. I changed it back to 7 before posting, but I hope it didn't reset again for some reason.

Perhaps the "Reggies" should also include Reggie Smith? Smith received very little discussion while on the ballot or at the 2000 VC election (his only so far). With a VC election coming up next year, he may be someone worth exploring, as he would seem to be a pretty strong fit for our standards. He's kind of a Jimmy Wynn type candidate, in that you have to suspend disbelief somewhat and put some faith (perhaps a lot) in more advanced statistics, but if Wynn can make it, Smith should have a good argument as well (and perhaps Dwight Evans too for that matter).

As another note, interesting to see the number of players that shot up to 50% for the first time last election. Bruce Sutter, Graig Nettles, Dan Quisenberry, Lee Smith, and Willie Randolph all made the benchmark, and perhaps should merit additional conversation. Once you get around that level, focused discussion can actual make a difference. One person who may have benefitted from some extra conversation was Rollie Fingers. Fingers is in his last year on the ballot and it's been a long time (maybe since Eppa Rixey and Sam Rice?) since a player consistently garnered strong support over 60% like Fingers but couldn't quite get over the hump.

Maybe I give too much credit to the relievers of the 70s & 80s, but Fingers, Smith and Sutter are the only ones you mentioned that I ever considered HOFers. I'm not a fan of the relief pitcher position, but these guys seemed so dominant that it's hard for me to exclude them.

Jim, can you tell if the 7 days took this time?
It hadn't, but I've fixed it. Are you hitting the return button after entering your 7? That's the first question that comes to mind as to why it might not be working.

For Reggie Smith, some anecdotal evidence as to what type of ball player he was, what he did after he retired, and information about the time he spent in Japan would be a good launching pad for discussion. His advanced metrics look good (as well as his offensive numbers), but he's right on the border and I don't remember him as a player as in those days you rarely got to watch players from other teams play.

What about Dave Concepcion? He has gained a few supporters over the years, but no real discussion as to his deservedness. Hal McCoy, a writer for Dayton Daily News, has a short piece about his worthiness: http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/con...0206mccoy.html

    Boggs
    Darrell Evans
    Dwight Evans
    Fingers
    John
    Key
    Murphy
    Nettles
    Randolph
    Rice
    Stieb
    Sutter

in the end on 3B Boyer is in so while Bell is IMO a step below even if career length may put his countign numbers above while Nettles and Evans are at least on a par.
on RP: Quiz quite frankly has the worst number with men on base etc. of the big closers of his era and that even more than ERA+ was his job, whereas today coming in with a clean inning it's a diferent game. Smith is too much of a one inning closer for my taste.
Murphy had 6 years that surpassed Mattingly's 6, Lynn's and Parkers. Rice got my vote because he had better numbers 128 to 121 OPS+ than Murphy with similar career length.
Randolph goes as 2B b/c I think he is easily in the top 15-25 all time at his position.
Concepcion, I've looked at (eventually I will have a SS ranking), but he is a step below the glove guys Ozzie, Long, Maranville and Aparicio. I cannot give him a nod. Even his peak from the mid 70s or even 78-early
80s does not put him above them when looking at their peaks.
Key 186-117, with a ERA and ERA+ crown and 123 ERA gets a nod which means Stieb does too (and of course after I voted realized Guidry should as well). They may not get a vote next time.
Langston was more pedestrian (as a HOF candidate) than I expected near .500 record and 108 ERA+.
John IMO must go if the Grimes, Rixey crew is in.
Staub was a tough omission after Rice got a vote but the peak is nto quite there...Lynn career length and scattered peak alogn with eeeh defense after @82.

I'll agree with you on Reggie Smith Call me biased or deluded but (with the exception of one game) I thought during the 77/78 WS he was the better Reggie period.

My ballots seems to be getting bigger:

    Wade Boggs
    Darrell Evans
    Rollie Fingers
    Tommy John
    Dale Murphy
    Dave Parker
    Willie Randolph
    Jim Rice
    Bruce Sutter

New additions this year- Boggs and Rice. Boggs meets my definition of a first ballot guy, and Rice is in his 11th year- I'll start voting for him- he's right on the border for me. Not convinced he had a better career than Frank Howard, who I didn't support. Given this I think I'd support Howard if given a chance.

Several other current guys may make my ballot next year.

Rusty Staub was a very good player for a long time- he's just a bit below my line for this HOF.

Looks like you're right- he needs 4 more people to vote, and all 4 for him, to make 21/28. Too bad.

He actually picked up two new voters this year. But unfortunately two voters who didn't vote in the last election voted this time and left Murphy off their ballot.
