Thread: BBF Progressive HoF Election: 2004

  1. #26
I agree that no one in that quartet clearly deserves the modest honor, but it's a fine list.

Heathcliff Slocumb turned out "invaluable" in value but that doesn't count here.

Meanwhile, the class of 2004 is coming up short even at the "one vote" level.

    Buddy Bell
    Wade Boggs
    Darrell Evans
    Dwight Evans
    Rollie Fingers
    Dale Murphy
    Graig Nettles
    Al Oliver
    Tony Phillips
    Dan Quisenberry
    Willie Randolph
    Lee Smith
    Rusty Staub
    Dave Stieb
    Bruce Sutter

Decided I'd toss a vote Phillips' way. He's at least borderline.

And a tip of the cap to Jim Abbott.

Murphy just can't seem to get that 1 vote he needs for election. It's been a long time since we've had a player come as close as he has and not been elected.

Of the guys who are on the 2004 ballot, besides winner Boggs, it now seems like Murphy is the only one with a decent chance of getting in. The Evans brothers and Fingers are the only other ones to break 50%, at 56%- and Darryl's in year 11 and Dwight's in year 9. Fingers is done. Maybe somebody besides Murphy will make a big surge, but probably not.

I agree that Dale Murphy is the only player who has a shot on the regular ballot. The only other two who have an outside chance ofthe holdovers are Sutter and Quisenberry and that would only he with a great deal of conversation and advocating for them.

Out of the next 5 cycles, these newcomers have the best chance for election:

    2005: Albert Belle, Will Clark
2006: Tony Gwynn, Mark McGwire, Cal Ripken
    2007: Tim Raines
    2008: Rickey Henderson
2009: Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff

There are others who will have their supporters and not all of those players will necessarily get in. Those arejust the ones with the best shot at election.
