Will the Yankees ever lift their ban on beards, earrings, or long hair?

Alright, I could understand why some might support not allowing earrings, or even long messy hair and full Zach Galifianakis-type beards. But not allowing neatly trimmed goatees? That's just silly. Was there ever a serious movement to repeal the ban? I haven't heard anything, even with George's passing (he apparently was the one most in favor of these rules).

Here's a fun article on the subject:

I distinctly remember David Wells sporting facial hair, but don't remember him sporting it with the Yankees.

    I sure hope not.

Goatees are as played out as the high five and hand slaps.

But if someone wants to wear one and it's neatly trimmed, why stop him?

    Because they look lousy.

No it's a part of being a Yankee. It's like saying will the Yankees ever put the name of the players on the back of the jerseys.

I have always been clean-shaven my whole life, but some look good in a neatly trimmed goa-tee. The Yankess allow mustaches. No American under the age of 45 wears a porn-stach these days, so why not update the 70's a bit to the new generation?

I don't think it's the same (plus, I believe George started this rule in the 70's). Maybe not allowing dreads or Zach Galifianakis messy beards, but something neatly trimmed. Allow the players to develop their own personalities, rather than be school-boys.

George started the policy in 1974, shortly after buying the Yanks. He believed that it promoted the vision of professionalism (to that I say fine, but wasn't Munson always starting fights?) Don Mattingly got called out by George in the mid 80's over it. I believe the his boys will keep it up. Just another Yankee tradition. And Yes, Dave Wells sported facial hair with Toronto and such, but always appeared clean shaven when with the Yankees.

I thing they should modify it. They allow porn-staches, but they are extremely outdated. Except in rare cases, no US-born man under age 43 has one these days. Just upgrade it to neatly-trimmed goa-tees.

I used to work for a very strict bank when it came to appearance. Now a very loose company. We still work hard. We are just more comfortable.

You're not on national TV almost every single day. I happen to enjoy seeing the Yankee players being clean-shaving and orderly in behavior. There are 29 other teams to consider if the dress code doesn't suit someone.

Does a player with a huge 'stach bother you? That would be allowed on the Yanks. In all honesty, is that better than a very neat goa-tee?

Is this really so bad and dis-orderly:

If you could find a smaller pic, that may be helpful.

In this market, sometimes I wonder if an ace pitcher said he wouldn't cut his hair, what the Yankee front office's reply would be. However, if someone were expendible and a non-star player, especially a bench guy, he'd have to conform, just like everyone else.

I don't think that a huge, fuzzy mustache would fly in the Bronx. Boss George may be gone, but his sons live on, so I believe that the tradition continues.

At every Old Timers' Game, the Yanks always trot out Oscar Gamble, who famously wore a huge 'fro when he played in pinstripes:

Other notable exceptions to the current rule:

    and

That obviously won't happen in the 2011 team, and I'm happy with the "shape-up (pun intended) ... or ship out".

Mustaches aren't exceptions, they are specifically allowed under current rules. It doesn't matter if you barely make the team or are team captain, they are allowed. Nick Johnson wore one routinely last year, and Jason Giambi had a thick one in 2007, creating a mini fashion statement. Phil Hughes also has one briefly in 2008, and CC Sabiathia wears a pencil-thin 'stach. Now, if you wanna ban them too, that would be consistent. But look at that pic of Pujols. Why make him shave, it's not a mess? Is it really worse than a thick porn 'stach?

Oscar Gamble had to cut his afro when he joined the Yankees. I remember a picture of his wife crying while it was getting cut. That Topps card was an airbrush of Gamble while he was with the Indians.

Munson famously had more then a bit of stubble with his mustache in 77 and after a member of the NY Press brought it up (regarding rules applying to some and not others etc) he was made to shave it off, adding to his already sour attitude towards the press.

I'm in favor of the ban on beards, long hair and earrings, mostly because it looks sloppy and unprofessional, or un-Yankee like. But the Yanks seem to have no problem with tattoo freaks, steroid and HGH users, illegal drug users, wife-beaters,etc. I think that if Cliff Lee joined the team and showed up with medium-length hair, a neat beard and an earring, they'd let him get away with it.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Yankee Stadium. Here are the lineups for todays game...

Of they didnt allow them, then they would have no players left.

I don't see the point in banning neatly shaven goatees either. I rather like them. They do look better than mustaches.
