In the top of the 14th, the 1971 Giants get a runner to third with 2 outs, and Kevin Mitchell gets a FB (LF) X - he is a 4, but an 18 (choose another) and a 1 end the golden threat. But Fuentes and McCovey can't get Mays home with an insurance run. Will Clark walks to lead off the bottom of the 15th. Kevin Mitchell strikes out but Matt Williams singles Clark to third. The 1971 Giants get 2 runs in the top of the first on rally that included 2 walks, 2 singles, a double and a sacrifice, then add 2 more runs in the second on a Willie McCovey home run for an early 4-0 lead.

Jose Uribe triples with one out in the fifth and the 1971 Giants elect to play the infield back and pinch hiter Ernest Riles GB X chance scores Uribe to cut the lead to 4-1.

The 1989 Giants add another run when Will Clark homers with one out in the 6th but three consecutive hits and an error by Tito Fuentes plate two more runs to knot the game at 4-4.

Ken Henderson walks with one out in the 8th and for the third time in 2 games, he is out stealing on a 1-15 chance. Dick Dietz remedies the unhappiness when he blasts a home run a batter later to give the 1971 Giants a 5-4 lead. Gaylord Perry retires the 1989 Giants in the 8th and Jerry Johnson comes in and nails down the game 2 win with a 1-2-3 9th. Perry struck out 10 in 8 innings.

    Game 3

Kevin Mitchell launches a 2-9 bomb for a second inning home run to give the 1989 Giants a 1-0 lead, but Ken Henderson and Dick Dietz smash back to back doubles (Dietz getting a 12 on a HR 1-11 roll) to even it up at 1-1 after 2.

In the 1989 Giants top of the sixth, 3 hits, 2 walks and a sacrifice plate 2 runs to make it 3-1 1989 Giants. Willie McCovey singles home Tito Fuentes who had doubled in the bottom of the 6th to narrow the score to 3-2. Kevin Mitchell makes a 2 base error giving the 1971 Giants a golden chance with no one out in the bottom of the 7th but a flyout, ground out and strike out of Willie Mays lets Scott Garrelts get out of trouble.

Fuentes singles to lead off the 8th but McCovey strikes out and Bonds pops out. Ken Henderson rolls a clutch 1-4 for the go ahead 2 run HR and the 1971 Giants lead for the first time 4-3.

With one out in the top of the 9th, WIllie Mays rolls a 3 on a X fielding chance, committing a 2 base error. The 1971 Giants manager elects to leave Steve Stone in (probably the worst of the 8 1971 Giants pitchers) and he calmly gets a ground out, walks a pinch hitter, then fields a comebacker to end the game and earn the win.

All 3 games have been narrow, 1 run nailbiters.

    Game 4

The 1971 Giants again explode early and this time hang on for an easy 6-2 Game 4 win. Willie McCovey and Willie Mays had run scoring hits in the first and with 2 outs and no one on in the second Pitcher Ron Bryant rolled a 2-4 for a clean single. Ken Henderson followed with a triple to plate Bryant then Chris Speier, Bobby Bonds and Willie McCovey had consecutive hits to plate two more runs making it 5-0.

Bryant pitched a complete game and had a 3 hit shutout after 8 innings before surrendering 3 hits and 2 runs in the 9th. Ken Henderson had 3 hits and 2 runs scored and Willie McCovey had 3 hits including 2 doubles on HR 1-9, 2B 10-20 chances.

    Game 5

The game starts out as a 5 inning scoreless pitcher's duel between aces Juan Marichal and Rick Reuschel. With 2 outs in the 6th, however, Will Clark reaches on Chris Speier's error and Kevin Mitchell makes the error a costly one with a 2 run HR. Matt Williams follows with his own HR to give the 1989 Giants a 3-0 lead. The 1971 Giants fight back in the bottom of the 6th with their own 2 out rally as Willie McCovey again misses a HR chance and settles for a double (this time off the pitcher's card) and scores on Willie Mays' single. Mays steals second and scores on Alan Gallagher's 2 out base hit.

Matt Williams get another of those weird rolls, this time a 2-11 role for another HR plating 2 runs in the 8th and the 1971 Giants can only answer with one back and lose 5-3.

    GAME FIVE

    Game 6

Ken Henderson leads off the game with yet another 1-4 home run roll, but another error by Speier leads to an unearned second run for the 1989 Giants knotting the game at 1-1. Galyord Perry triples off Don Robinson's card but it takes a 2 out double by Bobby Bonds to finally plate him. The 1989 Giants answer with 3 hits and run in the bottom of the fourth and after 4 we are tied 2-2.

A big rally for the 1989 Giants plates 2 runs in the 7th and even then they left the bases loaded. They tack on 2 more runs in the 8th when Brett Butler lights a charge into one, making the 1971 Giants 2 run rally in the 9th meaningless.

At one point in the game (innings 3-4) the 1989 Giants had these split chances on consecutive ebatters:

    1) P Don Robinson had a FB (RF) X chance and the 9 roll would have been a double or triple off most fielders, but Bonds 1 rating made it an out
    2) Brett Butler had a single 1, chance and rolled a 2
    3) Robby Thompson had a single 1-10 chance and rolled an 11
    4) Will Clark had a single 1-14 chance and rolled a 15
    5) Kevin Mitchell had a HR 1-10 2B 11-20 chance and rolled an 11

    GAME SIX
    1971 Giants 101 000 002 - 4 9 0
    1989 Giants 010 100 22x- 6 9 0

    series tied 3-3
