World Series Champions: Official Draft Thread

All righty, everyone! It's time to start some team-building! The rules of the draft are as follows:

    1) Rosters must meet the following requirements:

    4 starting pitchers
    5 relief pitchers
8 players to start at each non-pitcher position
    2 backup infielders
    2 backup outfielders
    1 backup catcher
3 spots which you can allocate at your own discretion

    2) The pool will consist of all players to play on the winning side in the World Series, and you must declare which team you're drafting a player from. Players who played for a championship team in the regular season or in the earlier rounds of the playoffs but not the World Series are ineligible.

    3) A player may only fill a position on your roster that he played in the World Series for the team you draft him from. For instance, if you draft Willie Stargell from the 1971 Pirates he can only play left field. If you draft Stargell from the 1979 Pirates he can only play first base. A player who played multiple positions in one World Series is eligible to fill any of the positions he played.

(Tip: If you're not sure which positions a player played in a certain World Series, go to Baseball-Reference, find the page of the player you want and scroll down to the "Postseason Batting" section. There's a link right next to the red heading that says "Postseason Gamelog," where it'll show you a list of every postseason game the player played in, and which positions he occupied in the box score.)

    4) We'll distinguish between starting pitchers and relief pitchers. A pitcher may only be used as a starter if he started a game in the World Series he's drafted from, and likewise with relievers.

(Tip: You can easily figure this out through Baseball-Reference too. Just scroll down to a player's "Postseason Pitching" section and look at the "G" and "GS" columns.)

    5) If you draft a player who only pinch-hit or pinch-ran in the given World Series, that's all he can do for your team.

    6) There is no DH for our teams. You may draft a player who only played DH in the World Series, but if you do, he's only eligible to pinch-hit for your team.

    7) Once you have drafted from a particular World Series winner you may not draft from that team again, though you may draft from the same franchise in a different championship year.

    8) Each championship team may only be selected from three times in the entire draft.

    9) The draft will go snake-style. If you wish to change your pick, you must do so before the next person in line has picked or before your selection is listed in the "Full Draft" section below. Any attempts to change a pick after that (either the player or the team from which he is drafted) will not be allowed.

    10) You will have 12 hours to make a selection once your turn comes up. The hours of 2 AM-8 AM Central Time will be considered "dead time," during which the draft clock will be frozen (though you may make a pick during this time if you wish). If you do not make your pick after the 12 hours, the next person in line will get to draft, and you will be able to make up your missed pick(s) at any time. If your turn comes up a second time and you still have not made up your missed picks, you will be automatically skipped until you do.

    11) If you make an invalid pick (i.e. pick a player who's already been taken, or pick from a team you aren't allowed to select from), said pick will be treated as a missed pick, and the next person in line will be allowed to select. As with missed picks, you will be able to make it up at any time, and if you still haven't made it up when your turn comes up again, you'll be automatically skipped until you do.

    12) Once the draft is complete we'll determine a winner through a voting playoff. This is a career draft, so how well a player performed in the given World Series or in the given season are irrelevant to evaluating rosters.

The draft officially begins on Monday, August 22 at 8 PM Central Time.

    Draft order is as follows:

    1) Tyrus4189Cobb
    2) BigRon
    3) Brad Harris

    5) ian2813

According to your PM, we can start whenever. After seven hours of thought and hundreds of pages of scrap in my waste basket, I've decided to take Babe Ruth from the 1927 New York Yankees.

Oh man, Ty. I can't believe you made that choice- obviously you haven't been analyzing these players very well! Who is this Ruth guy, anyhow? What'd he ever do?

Not sure when I'll make my first pick- maybe later today. Ian wanted to start the clock Monday evennig, but....

You're welcome to make your first pick whenever. No one's on the clock until Monday evening, but if everyone wants to get things rolling now, I'm cool with that.

Okay, I'll make my first pick. All kidding aside, I really struggled with it. For me, it was clear that I should take 1 of 2 guys- but which one? I couldn't really make a bad decision, but I'm still not positive I made the best one. In any case, I'll take

          Willie Mays- 1954 Giants.

Wise man, Brad. That, of course, was my dilemma- Mays or Wagner. Good arguments for and against both- and I'm not just talking about their performance.

Ian's up. Maybe there was a reason he scheduled the start for 8 PM Central time.

You know, you could do a lot worse than to have the greatest third baseman of all time on your team, so I'll pick Mike Schmidt from the 1980 Phillies.

Just for the record, guys, I'm in Korea right now, so my sleeping hours are afternoon hours in the U.S. I'm running this draft on Central Time because I figure it's more convenient for the rest of you. If it seems like I'm missing in the afternoon, it's probably because of the time zone difference.

Thanks for the "All WS Champs" section on the first page with the number of players selected from each team. You just made my life a lot easier.
