Independent League shortens season as two teams fold

The North American League has, after the Maui Na Koa Ikaika and Lake County Fielders shut down operations, decided to finish their season early and will begin their playoffs this coming weekend.

Here's a link about what happened at Ballpark Digest http://ballparkdigest.com/2011081641...aui-shuts-down

The situation in Lake County was laughable from the start and should be used as a prime example for future indepent leagues to vet their ownership groups carefully and for future sites of independent teams to get their money up front! The Maui attempt was a bold one and might have worked given time but the costs of travel proved too much.

    NAL Championship Series

The Edmonton Capitals defeated the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings 7-1 in the opening game of the NAL championship series in Edmonton. Former major leaguer Lou Pote went eight innings, striking out 11 as he scattered eight hits and gave up only the one run.

Game two of the best of seven series is tonight.

Edmonton won game two by final score of 7-4, taking a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

Apparently the White Wings added nine players from the San Angelo Colts (the team they beat in the first round of the playoffs) because several players didn't have the proper documentation to travel to Canada to play!

Edmonton Capitals - 2011 NAL Champions

The Edmonton Capitals defated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings four games to one and have won the inaugral North American League championship.

It's highly possible that the Edmonton Capitals will be the ONLY North American League champions as the league is on shaky ground.

I hope that some of the teams survive and find/create a league to play in. There are some decent organizations in this league with some good fan bases and it would be a shame to lose them.
