Johnny Schmitz passes away at 90

Schmitz pitched for Brooklyn in 1951 and 1952. He had the reputation as a "Dodger killer" when he played with the Cubs.

I too remember Schmitz as a “Dodger killer,” but the record book hardly bears that out.

Schmitz was 18-17 lifetime against Brooklyn, and only 6-13 at Ebbets Field, so in the record books, rather than in memory, we beat him about as often as he beat us. In most years, he was a mediocre 1-3 against us, except for 1948, when he went 6-3.

Looking at those numbers, it’s hard to see where he got his “Dodger killer” reputation.

Could it be that ’48 season? Or the fact that of his 13 NL shutouts, five of them were against the Dodgers?
