I think they've done away with the numbers' shadow effects. I believe they disappeared when they got rid of the black in all forms of the unis. I was pretty amazed when I found out that the black had been part of the Mets' uniforms since 1999. It took only 13 years, but I'm so glad they've entirely gotten rid of the black altogether.

As for the snow whites, I didn't realize this either, but those were introduced in 1997. For some reason, I don't mind them, but I prefer the classic traditional royal blue pinstripes.

Either way, it's just so refreshing to watch the Mets this year with them wearing a form of their traditional home pinstriped unis, as well as the "New York" road grays. Both remind me of the classic unis they wore in the first half of the 1970s.
    Put it in the books.

Howie Rose mentioned briefly during tonight's game that Johan Santana doesn't like pinstripes.

Johan Santana is a kind soul.

anyone else besides me not happy with the fact that we apparently are not going to see the pinstripes during the day ANYMORE????? Doesnt feel like the Pins really are the primary uni with all the day games.

Although I wear my all black Mets cap most of the time, what truly bugged me about the Mets wearing the black uniform is that their would be times where their opponent would their dark top alternative as well, IMO just looks bad. But truth be told, The Cubs Blue alternative really bugs me as does the A's green top.

Mets are wearing black, awesome! I didn't see that one coming. But if they lose I won't bee surprised if I see, "BLACK IS BAD LUCK!!!"
Also does anybody have a picture of the T-Shirt and Hat when they were 2000 NL Champs?

Mets are indeed wearing the black uniforms. They appear to have the 50th anniversary patch on the right shoulder and regular Mets patch on the left shoulder. This moves the KID 8 patch above the METS logo on the chest.

I wonder if the team will wear the blue alternates.

The black was allegedly only for the Franco HoF induction night. And the solid blue alternates won't appear until next season. ..or so I hear.

Frankly, I'd like to see only the white with royal blue pinstripes and the solid whites at home, and the traditional road and perhaps the solid blue alternates on the road only. But something tells me they'll be using the solid blues at home as well. I really wish they'd use their uniform variations only for merchandise marketing at the Mets shop and Modell's and just stick to tradition on the field.

    Put it in the books.

Black jerseys last night made me shudder. Love the blue fences and the Mets return to blue, orange and white.

No mas with the black. I was hoping, even though they were retained as an official uniform in 2012, that they wouldn't make an appearance. Looks so bland last night on tv.

I believe it was done in honor of John Franco - the black unis debuted when he was captain of the 1999-2000 Wild Card / pennant-winning Mets teams, and feature prominently in many pictures of that era. The Mets hadn't worn them at all otherwise this year.

Just be careful Matt, the moderators are fair but warn us about posting non "citi field" stuff. Was happy that for Fridays momentous occasion and this weekend that they kind of let it slide a little.

To quickly respond to your post, I agree! I was so upset to see the black uniforms for what I believe was the first time this season. Its been so nice to see the black removed from the home whites and road grays and hopefully after the 50th anniversary they stay with this look, but who knows with the Mets. And of all nights a national televised game, why the black?? Ughhhhhhhhh! Like robardin noted mayeb it was because of Francos night. Either way I was unhappy to see them back.
Both you and I are not the only ones eithers, I think a large majority of people has been calling for and to the black on all mets uniforms and a return to the traditional ornage and blue.

Citi Field looks quite dark and shadowy during night games on tv. Just another reason why the brighter blue fence padding helps. The black jersey just made the players blend in with the shadows background again rather than stand out brightly as they should.

    That's stadium related, right?

I liked the black, because, well--

It was OCCASIONAL, and not every other game, like it seemed sometimes before.

Traditional pinstripes/Snow Whites/Traditional road greys all the way...

And THEN, maybe, black for a couple nights a year, like this.

I know I'm in the minority here, but a handful of times a year wearing black...I don't think that's so bad...

I disagree with you. I would prefer just the snow whites at home and gray on the road with the occasional weekend blue alternate. I would dump the pinstripes and black uniforms. It's a good, classic, traditional look.

My avatar is Mets snow white.

It also reminds me of the classic uniforms worn by the Tigers and Red Sox and are a strong contrast to the Yankees pinstripes and Mets road grays.

Agreed. I like the road alt becuase its uses the silver like the 1983 alt blue tops. The 1983 will always have a special place in my heart because Seaver wore them. IDK why they didnt use silver on the home lettering, but as you say, at least it aint black!

The new blue uniform looks amazingly like the Blue Jays - so much irony.
Cleon Jones catches a deep fly ball in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Valley of the Ashes, and a second-grader smiles in front of the black and white television.

No offense intended, Straw, but only you could tie together a new uniform design with the idol you continue to mourn.

Melky's not my idol! Sure there are some who said the Mets should sign him, but I'm not so sure....
