Most Frustrating Bug on Baseball-Fever Website

When you click on your list of subscribed threads, there's a little triangle that's supposed to take you to the first post you haven't read in a thread. Problem is, if you don't check the message board within a few hours this site ignores the post you last read and moves it up.

Case in point, open up a list of threads you haven't read before and click on the triangle. Logically, if you've never read the thread you should be taken to post #1. But as you can see, you'll be taken to a post from the past few hours. Makes no sense.

If you've been away for a couple days, you are completely lost when you come back until you take the time to re-read every thread until you see a post that vaguely looks familiar, then start reading again. It also means you will miss a whole bunch of new posts because the thread title won't get bolded and you won't know to click it unless you carefully look at the dates. IMO this is the #1 bug on this message board and makes it hard to follow threads.

I don't understand why the first new post button doesn't take you to the first new post

I have a similar problem. I don't subscribe to any threads, but when I visit the forum I click on "New Posts," and when I click on the "first unread" icon I'll be taken to a post that I've already read.

I've also found that once I click "New Posts," the site will assume I've read ALL of the new posts, whether or not I really have. So in order to make sure I'm up to date on the threads I'm following, I HAVE to read ALL of the new posts - even if at times if I don't have time, or just don't want to, read ALL of the new posts. Why can't the "first unread" icon stay until I've either actually READ the thread, or declde to click "Mark Forums Read" in "Forum Actions?"

I've sent a note to our wonderful webmaster inquiring about this issue. Whether it's fixable or not is a different story. One thing I know is that it's sitewide, for it happens to me too. My guess is it's a cookie issue, which makes me think it may not be a real hassle to fix. We shall see.
    Put it in the books.

I have the bug fix, sorry about the delay. I had a death in my family (mother) followed by Thanksgiving (more than 30 people planned) and I'm, like everyone else, now trying to get situated for the holidays. I usually save up a few items before doing upgrades due to the size of the site upgrades / fixes have to be pre-planned rather carefully. I'll speed this up some and get back to you as soon as possible...

Does your browser have tabs? What I do is click on all the threads that I want to read, and each one opens in a new tab. So, if I want, I can read half of them now and half of them later.

Yes. I have tabs. And I open a new tab for each thread I want to read.

    But here's what happens:

    1) I log on, click "New Posts," and there are, let's say, 10 threads with the little blue circle next to the name of the thread indicating there are new posts. In this case I only want to read 3 of these threads now. Maybe I don't have time to go through all 10 threads right now, and just want to read these 3 because they're of the most interest to me; maybe I'm only interested in these 3, period, and will never want to read the other 7 threads. The website doesn't know which is the case. Anyway...

    2) I read the 3 threads I want to read, leaving the other 7 threads unread, and log off.

    3) I log on later. Let's say there have been new posts in 15 additional threads since I logged off. So there should be a total of 22 threads with the little blue circle next to the name of the thread indicating there are new posts - the 15 that are new, and the 7 I didn't read earlier. Instead, the site assumes I read all 10 of the threads that had new posts when I logged in earlier (including the 7 I didn't actually read), and just indicates that there are 15 posts with unread threads.

First and foremost, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is sorry about your loss, , and extends their hand out to you in your time of grieving. In light of this sad course of events, I think no one will hold against you any extra time it may take for you to get to special ops. Personally speaking, you have my deepest condolences.

When the time does come, I think Gary has explained the problem in adequate detail, Post #6.

I'm officially the slowest webmaster on the Internet, I am sorry about that. I proceed now so cautiously that its probably a bit extreme. But protecting every single post on this site is truly beyond the utmost importance to me. I often crawl, test, re-test, crawl, complain, cry, test, re-test, drink more coffee, then do that all over again the next hour. This bug was fixed last night (along with dozens of other small ones and dozens of new upgrades were added) so the problem is gone and I really am sorry about the delay.

My mom did in fact pass away. Then when I returned from that AVG reported a malware attack on Baseball Almanac. Norton, McAfee and dozens of other systems said there was no virus. This took me six full weeks to solve (only last week did it finally get resolved) and cost me over thousands in lost revenue and more than a thousand in programming fees. Lots of excuses, yes, but I've always been quite honest about just keep plugging along. I do promise to speed things up more this year and launch several new cool features (as well as support those in place a bit faster).

    Sean
