The Phillies picked a a valuable player in Ty Wigginton in a deal with the Colorado Rockies this weekend. The Phils are even getting Colorado to pay half his 2012 salary
($4 million total). The deal is for a player to be named later or cash. If the Phillies pick up Wigginton's 2013 option then An Additional minor leaguer will be sent to he Rockies. Wigginton will receive a $500,000 buyout if the 2013 option is not picked up by the Phils.
Wigginton can play all infield positions except shortstop. He also can play the outfield. He's been a regular some years, like when he was selected to the American league All-Star team in 2010, while with the Baltimore Orioles, and a Super-Sub other years. With the Phillies he willbe used to fill in for 3B Placido Polanco and 1B Ryan Howard and if neccessary, he can start for an extended period of time.
The Phillies bench was badly in need of power hitting in 2011. This has been shorn up by the offseason acquisitions of Wigginton and Jim Thome. Wigginton has over 150 career home runs and has topped 20 home runs in a season three times.
