    Seth McClung

ALDERSON — Having pitched his last Major League baseball game with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2009, Seth McClung was hoping for one more shot at the big leagues when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates this past November after a few seasons in the minors and even in Mexico, trying to earn his way back.

But after pitching well during limited spring training action with the big league club — his final pitch was a 93 mile-per-hour fastball that helped him strike out the side — he received the call that ended his comeback attempt on March 22, when the Pirates told him he was released.

“I think I fit in with the Major League plans as a backup guy in the minor leagues to call up, but they were really having a youth movement,” said McClung of his experience with the Pirates. “I don’t think they expected me to throw that well, and they didn’t have a spot. I took it as a sign from God that it was time to move on. Once I accepted that, everything else fell into place for me.”

After 16 years playing professional baseball, McClung decided enough was enough. He had other offers to keep the dream alive, but he decided it was time to remove the jersey for good.

    Paul Konerko

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - If you are caught up in all the buzz with a particular New York Yankees captain retiring at season's end, then perhaps Paul Konerko is just an afterthought.

No disrespect to future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, because he deserves every accolade, standing ovation, parting gift or sincere words for what he's accomplished at the highest level of baseball. Jeter's longevity is truly amazing.

But there's a guy in Chicago who has worn a White Sox uniform since 1999 calling it quits after Sunday. Konerko has played the last 16 years with the White Sox and the first baseman is leaving behind big shoes to fill. Although he may have flown under the radar when it comes to superstars in baseball, Konerko has the numbers to brag about when Cooperstown comes calling.

    Octavio Dotel

the age of 40, Octavio Dotel has announced that he has retired from baseball. He last played early in the 2013 season. Twenty-one years ago, the Mets signed Dotel, a Dominican pitcher who was then a 19-year-old. He will always stand as a part of one of the most memorable games in franchise history.

Dotel's first major league start came on June 26, 1999, against the Braves, with the opposing pitcher just happening to be future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine. Dotel didn't last long, allowing six runs and five hits over four-and-one-third innings as the Braves won 7-2. He'd win his next start against the Marlins—a 12-8 Mets win—despite giving up five runs and six hits over five innings.

    Josh Beckett

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Josh Beckett is retiring, he told MLB.com.

Beckett said he is calling it a career after the Dodgers were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Tuesday night.

Beckett, who was a World Series MVP at age 23 and threw a no-hitter May 25 at age 34, pinned the decision on his health. He needs surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip, with MLB.com reporting the surgery will take place in May.

"I just don't see me going through that rehab and coming back to pitch at this point in my life," Beckett told MLB.com.

Second baseman Brian Roberts, who played all but one season of his 14-year major league career with the Baltimore Orioles, confirmed Friday that he is retiring.

"It was just kind of my time," Roberts told the Baltimore Sun. "There were numerous reasons that I felt like I couldn't play at a level that I was accustomed to and wanted to play at if I continued to play. I always said that I wasn't going to be the guy that tried to hang on as long as I could."

I wouldn't be surprised If Konerko makes the Hall Of Fame someday, particularly as a Veterans Committee candidate. Now with the shortened number years a player can be on the writers' Hall Of Fame ballot rule going into effect, Konerko could become a prime Veterans Committee candidate by the time he is in his mid-50s. Under current rules he'd be Veterans Committee
election-eligible in 2032 (if not already elected by the writers). By that time the Veterans Committee will be dealing with a number of candidates who were tarnished by PED scandals.
To have hit about 440 home runs, had over 2300 hits, hit over .280, with over 1,400 RBI and to have played almost his entire career for one team, the Chicago White Sox, who will surely back Konerko and campaign for him - and to have done all this "Clean" in a "Dirty" era, should make Konerko one of the top Vets Committee candidates of the 2030s.

That other recent retiree that you referred to - Mr. Jeter, well he's done everything that can be done by a position player, except maybe in the home run department. Jeter even put his stamp on his final game as a major leaguer, singling in his final at bat to raise his career batting average a point from .309 to .310 and I doubt if very many players in baseball history have accomplished anything similar. He's an automatic choice for election in his first year of eligibility for the HOF and I would think his chances are very good for getting the highest percentage of votes in favor of his election in the history of "The Hall". His fans can start booking hotel rooms in the Cooperstown, NY area for the last weekend of July 2020 immediately.
