1979 Awards Balloting

--The 1979 awards voting is now open. Ballots due one week from today, midnight EST on December 27. Leaderboards expanded to 25 are attached and will be posted again at the conclusion of the season. Please nominate any Rookie of the year candidates you have on your squad - or are aware of and want to point out from another club. Feel free to campaign for your MVP and CYA candidates as well.
--Please vote for 10 players on your MVP ballot, with votes counted 12,9,8,etc, CYA and ROy vote for 3 players with votes counted 5,3,1.

--The Knights offer SP John Fulgham for your Rookie of the year consideration. Fulgham is 15-1 with a 1.95 era. Steve Rogers is our CYA candidate, leading the league in ERA while calling Tiger Stadium home is an impressive achievement. Gary Carter is our MVP nominee.
--The Corsairs Fred Lynn looks like a pretty easy MVP selection. Phil Neikro is our CYA candidate. RP Danny Darwin is our ROY candidate.

The Thunder offer up Mike Parrott as their ROY candidate. He has a solid 3.13 (7th in the league) ERA in 230 IP (almost a 100 more than Fulgham). Dennis Eckersley is our CYA candidate, boasting a 18 - 11 record and a 3.26 ERA in 257 IP. And Sixto Lezcano is our MVP guy. He's got a line of .305/.404/.527, the second best OBP, SLG, and OPS in the league (behind the obvious MVP Lynn in all 3 categories).

Rick Matula is the only Blue rookie with significant playing time. Matula is 10-9 thus far with a 3.04 ERA in 162.2 IP. Impressive feat being over .500 on a team 12 games under .500.

RF/3B Joel Youngblood is the closest thing to an MVP. Youngblood has hit .256/.325/.400, leading the Blues in 2B's (31), 3B's (7), Runs (69), RBI's (68), BB's (53). Throw in 12 HR's, 12 SB's and solid defense, and Youngblood is easily the Blues best player.

Cy Young? Tough call between SP Dennis Lamp (15-11, 3.27 ERA, 217.2 IP) or closer Aurelio Lopez (10-5, 26 Saves, 2.59 ERA, 94 IP). Lopez gets the nod...

MVP-wise we've got three players with about the same value: Jim Rice, Chet Lemon and George Brett. Rice is way ahead in HR (33) and RBI (116) and plays a respectable RF. Lemon and Brett both have a tick over an 800 OPS and play stellar defense.

For the CYA we nominate Kent Tekulve. 1.18 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 26/26 in save opportunities.

Our best rookie is Dave Palmer. 10-6 in 18 starts, 2.97 ERA and a flat 1.00 WHIP.

1) Fred Lynn, CF, Corsairs: Lynn leads the league by 40 Runs Created while playing a very good CF to lead the Corsairs to the Ruth bye. Probably the most dominating offensive season by an up the middle player since the hey day of Willie Mays
2) Keith Hernandez, 1B, Dust Bunnies: the slick fielding 1B has been the most valuable player of the league's best team
3) Sixto Lezcano, RF, Thunder: missed some time but has been the 2nd best hitter in the league when healthy
4) George Brett, 3B, Skipjacks: Brett has had a fantastic second half leading the Skipjacks to the playoffs
5) Dave Winfield, RF, Luberjaxx: best player on the Cartwrigth division champs
6) Gary Carter, C, Knights: the best player on the league's second best team
7) Jim Rice, RF, Skipjacks: RBI machine for Skipjacks
8) Mike Schmidt, 3B, Gamblers: great power and defense
9) Eddie Murray, 1B, Beavers: best hitter amoung non-playoff teams
10) Ken Singleton, LF, Gold Sox: 2nd " " " " "

CYA
1) Steve Rogers, Knights: ERA champ and 20 game winner
2) Fergie Jenkins, Legends: great comeback season for the old warhorse
3) JR Richard, Gamblers: fireballing workhorse turned in a terrific season, leading in wins, IP and strikeouts

ROY
1) John Fulgham, SP, Knights: babied his young arm a little, but he was best pitcher in the league when he took the hill
2) Mike Parrot, SP, Thunder, excellent debut season for Windy City
3) Danny Darwin, RP, Corsairs: dominating season out of Emerald City pen

I wish I had thought to stump for a couple of my players, Fergie in particular. Neither the Legends nor the Lumberjaxx had any valid ROY candidate. At any rate, this is how I see the awards:

Most Valuable Player

1. Fred Lynn, Coprsairs – Led league in average, OBP, slugging, OPS; second in homers and runs; third in RBI and walks. His OPS was nearly one hundred points higher than the second highest, who was a part time player. All this while playing a fine center field. He should easily be a unanimous pick.
2. Sixto Lezcano, Thunder – His bat helped propel the Thunder to the Hulbert title. Was second in batting average, slugging, OBP and OPS. He was also second among regulars in RC/27, and by a sizeable margin. Quietly put up a very fine season
3. Keith Hernandez, Dust Bunnies – Leading hitter on the team with most wins and led the Dust Bunnies to their first division title. Played almost every game and flashed a brilliant glove as well.
4. Dave Winfield, Lumberjaxx – Led the Jaxx to that long elusive division title. Numbers not as large or impressive as a few others, but he was as valuable to his team as anyone.
5. George Brett, Skipjacks – Power numbers not as impressive as Rice’s, but he was always on base for Rice to drive in and played a much tougher position.
6. Gary Carter, Knights – Led the Knights to another playoff berth with his continued fine hitting and defense.
7. Mike Schmidt, Gamblers – Pounded the ball for the Gamblers as well as played a great third base for them. Almost led them to a miracle finish and kept them in the race all season.
8. Jim Rice, Skipjacks – His contributions at the plate were the equal of Brett’s, but he plays a less demanding defensive position.
9. George Foster, Hard Cider – Put up huge offensive numbers and would be much higher had the Hard Cider been more competitive this year.
10. Steve Kemp, Corsairs – Great numbers on the board, and together with Lynn made life miserable for CKL pitchers.

Cy Young Award

1. Fergie Jenkins, Legends – The old war horse was second in ERA, tied for second in wins, third in innings and first in WHIP. No homer vote here. Although Rogers beat him out in ERA, Jenkins was better in WHIP, innings pitched, complete games and shutouts.
2. Steve Rogers, Knights – Yet another fine season from the stellar Knights pitcher, who is working on a Hall of Fame resume.
3. Bruce Sutter, Lumberjaxx – I have to go with Sutter over Kent Tekulve, who had an incredible season in relief as well. Sutter pitched nearly twice the innings of Tekulve, had a WHIP much lower than Tekulve’s, posted a 15-2 record and converted 28 of 33 saves.


Rookie of the Year

1. John Fulgham, Knights – He didn’t pitch as much as the next two, but how do you argue with a 15-2 record and 2.09 ERA in a respectable 155 innings?
2. Mike Parrot, Thunder – Can’t explain that losing record for the division winner, but he had fine numbers and a lot of innings for the division winner. They may not have won it without him.
3. Dave Palmer, Skipjacks – Only finishes behind Parrot because he pitched a lot less innings.
