    Ted beard (1921-2011)

Ted Beard spent parts of five seasons with the Pirates (1948-52) and two more with the Chicago White Sox (1957-58). He had tremendous longevity in the minors playing into his 40s in a career that topped two decades. He passed away on December 30, 2011 eight days short of his 91st birthday (Jan. 7).
Slight of stature (5'8", 165 lbs.) he was a reserve outfielder for parts of seven major league seasons (all were partial seasons in the majors - no complete MLB seasons.) .
The most playing time he had in the majors in a season was 64 games with the 1950 Pirates as opposed to only 29 games in the minors that year.
He began his pro career in 1942 and quickly reached the high minors. Altogether he spent over 15 years with AAA teams. This AAA tenure was split two ways with Indianapolis of the American Association and with Hollywood and San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League. He played full time until 1960 at age 39. He was then primarily a coach for three more years, occasionally being activated and seeing brief playing action in the 1961 through 1963 seasons. His chief stops in the minors were with AAA- Indianapolis - Amer. Assoc. 1947-51 and 1957-63 and with AAA Pacific Coast League teams Hollywood 1952-1954 and San Francisco 1955-1956.
