An individual ran some test sims (145,000 seasons), using the 1952 season, to try and determine the effect of playing guys out of position. There is a ton of data. The first page of the thread has some information regarding what he found out; the other five pages are pretty much stats. Here is a link for anyone interested in really studying this:

BTW, even if you're not interested in what playing someone out of position could cost, there are also charts showing the runs saved/lost by fielders of different range/error ratings playing in position. Note that the baseline for all positions is a player rated Av/100. As an example, a shortstop rated Ex/000 saves 35 runs over baseline, while a SS rated pr/150 loses 25 runs versus the baseline. Interestingly, a Ss rated fr/50 is seven runs better than a SS rated ex/175 (and a SS rated pr/000 is also seven runs better).
And it would appear that Jason is correct. He states in the first quiz question that other than catcher, the positions most penalized for playing a guy out of position are the three outfield spots. For what it's worth.

what happens a lot in the earlier seasons is players played all over the place. guys spend one year as middle infielders then the next at catcher and 1st base then the next in the outfield and so on. with such a limited seletion of qualifying players - i want to be flexible in allowing for a reasonable expectation in a players ability to play a position. I don't think there will be a lot of need for re-rating fielding positions, but I want to do that where it is appropriate. the integrity of this league is the most important thing to me and I promise to exercise great judgement in making those decisions.

Rich- in post 251 you provided a blank roster/lineup sheet. You said I and perhaps others should email a filled out version to you. Perhaps I just didn't see it, but I don't have your email address. Could you provide it again? THanks. I have to get this out to you tonight because I'll be out of pocket tomorrow.
Can I get any help on Rich's email address? I'm in a bind if I can't email him tonight.
He posted it in the season thread last night. rmadachik@yahoo.com
Anyone have any idea what the baselines are for bunting/stealing/etc? Is it based on an estimate of what they did in 1901? Based on what they actually do today? I don't want to try to tell my team to do more than today when the program interprets it as doing more than they did in 1901
--Rich can answer that better than me, but it appears to me that teams are running and bunting between modern levels and 1901 levels. I just ran a test sim and steals were somewhat higher than modern levels, 5 teams stole over 200, with Jamestown leading with 254. Everybody was over 100, with Anahiem lowest at 109. Success rate was only around 60%. Nobody had 100 sac bunts, with the Barons highest at 95 and Express/Dragons lowest at 28.
--Real life team totals had 2 teams at 300 and 4 teams with more than Jamestown's P2P leading stolen base total. In real life every team had at least 100 sac bunts. Some of that is just that we aren't maxing all the players real life playing time. Some is managerial choices. I didn't check to see if other teams had been adjusted from standard to custom settings, but the Dragons are set for bunting and stealing less often.
Here is the mailing list I have for everyone. Looks like I am missing an address. Can we all check and confirm your email is here and correct?

Rich- my email address is the missing one. It's

Some of the managerial defaults I want are a little complicated. I obviously want to maximize my production, but don't want to make things too difficult for anyone running the sims. Is that a concern at all?
If a player reaches (or almost reaches) playing time limits during the regular season, what exactly happens during the playoffs? The rules seem to imply that the playing time basically resets as if he hadn't played at all, but it's unclear.

"A ballplayer has to just go out and be mean. You can't play half-heartedly. If you do, there's someone right over your shoulder that'll take your job away. If you don't do your job, what they're paying you for, why should they pay you? You just can't put in eight hours, that's what a lot of people don't realize about athletes. Very few people realize the pressure." Dave Kingman
With the offseason rapidly approaching, I have some questions about free agency -
If I bid for a free agent for 3 years at 5 million per year, and someone else bids 4 years at 4 million per year, who wins? Is it total contract value? Or dollars per year?
What if someone played in 1901, didn’t play in 1902, then played in 1903? Can we take them in the 1902 FA auction? Or do we have to wait for 1903?
Actually, if this works like the CKL (and I believe it does), the bid on a player is simply a dollar amount per season, with no length of contract involved until AFTER the highest bid takes the player. Then the owner determines how long he wants the contract to run:
FREE AGENT AUCTION
1) PFA and secondary auctions combined
2) No minmium years on contracts
3) All free agents will be eligible to be signed for up to 5 years.
4) Preliminary bidding runs for 48 hours with 250k bid increments; then
a) first official list of bids is posted - if not topped (still 250K) within 24 hours those players are signed
b) New free agent list is posted - if not topped at increments of 500K those players are signed
c) New free agent list is posted - if not topped in 24 hours at increments of 1M those players are signed
d) Blind Bid on all remaining players. Each owner submits a list of bids for players still active in the auction. Tge highest bid gets the player. in the case of a tie during blind bidding the winner will be the owner who had the worse record the previous season.
This is somewhat different for Restricted Free Agents. I'm a little confused here myself, though, Rich. What will control which bid the owner has to match in order to keep the player: dollar amount per season; length of contract; both (highest dollar amount and longest contract length); or total dollar amount of the highest contract?
A. RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
Any player who has completed their initial rookie contract of 7 years (all with the team that drafted him) will enter Restricted Free Agency. A list of restricted free agents will be provided to each owner along with a schedule for when each player can be bid on. We will do a blind auction on these players. Every owner who wants to participate will submit a list of bids and contract length to the commissioner (the commish will submit his list to another owner). The result of the highest bids will be posted. The original team will have 24 hours to match bids and contract length on their players in order to maintain control of that player. Any player not matched will be awarded to the bidding team. Bidding ties will be awarded to the team with the worse record the previous season. Any player not bidded on may also be re-signed by the original team at this point for minimum wage, or released. RFA Bids may be anywhere from 1-5 years in lengh.
A team that matches a RFA bid maintains control of that player. At the end of his contract he will be an RFA again.
Not sure about this. In the CKL, it is permitted to do this. I don't know if Rich will allow it in P2P.What if someone played in 1901, didn’t play in 1902, then played in 1903? Can we take them in the 1902 FA auction? Or do we have to wait for 1903?

Hope everyone has already gotten started on researching and planning for next season. The sooner everyone gets going on it, the sooner we can get going for 1902.
Speaking of which, could we do the lottery now, so people can know where they're going to be drafting? It makes planning easier. Also, do playoffs go towards determining draft order, or only the regular season?
I want to hold off on the lottery til the playoffs are over. All off-season activities dont take ace til the final game is played. Playoffs do indeed go towards draft order.

It doesn't affect the Express this year, but I wasn't aware of that. Are you saying that if per chance both the Bums and the Dragons win their series, then the Bums win the championship, they'll draft 12th rather than 9th? I'm a bit confused as to how the playoffs will affect the draft. Some clarification would be most appreciated.

So, I lost the playoffs, and someone in the AL will as well. Do I automatically get the worse draft pick because my regular season record was better? Or, since I was swept and they won't be, do I get the better pick? Or will it be randomized?
Here is how the draft order will work
Worst 4 teams have a lottery for pick 1-4 ...the remainder of the picks will go in order of record (the worst a lottery team can do is drop 3 spots). the final 4 positions in the draft go to the playoff teams. WS champion picks 12, Runner up 11, the team that lost to the champs 10 and the team that lost to the runner up 9th.
Hope that's as clear as mud.
I will have the owner of the WS runner up conduct the lottery. If that owner has a pick in the lottery because of a trade, I will have the WS winner conduct the lottery.
Hope that sounds acceptable to everyone.

Sounds OK, although as noted I didn't realize that would be how the seeding worked for the playoff teams. At this point, I'm rather glad the Bums managed to beat me out.
In another league I'm in the bottom four teams are also in a lottery for first pick; however, this year we had three teams tie for the fourth worst record. That league decided if there was a tie for the final lottery spot, all teams would enter the lottery, hence we had a six team lottery this year. Just wondering how a similar situation will be handled in this league. It should be noted that the only alternative suggested was to break any tie based on run differential, but everyone that voted felt that wasn't really fair.

Sounds good. Probably means I'll be picking 10th instead of 9th though.
I was going to complain about being stuck in the same league as the Dragons, but things will change from year to year.
I vote for a playoff for the bottom if there's a tie (only the winner gets it, so people try their best).
No, you only think so Joel. Check out Mark's record in the CKL (and I can verify how well he did annually in the PAP League we were in together as well). You will see that Mark has a particular genius for filling in the holes he has while maintaining a winning team. Like a fine time piece, he just keeps on ticking.
