Does anyone know of another team in history thats had so much top talent that has done so little with it?

Literally, we could put together a team with members of this forum and get the same results the Tigers are getting

Yes, thats an exaggeration. But not by much

I'll take the DH spot for that team. Somebody else has to run lest we end up like the Tigers needing four singles to score a run. (They were hot-stepping yesterday though)

I'm sure you're aware the man featured on your new avatar is the source of the greatest baseball quote of all time. Talking about the mid 70s Yankees clubhouse atmosphere he said "They say it don't be like it is, but it do."

Here's hoping these first back-to-back wins in over a month can be the beginnings of a winning streak. Throw nothing but your filthiest balls, Porcello. Leave the cheese for the post-game spread.

The season is barely a quarter old. Comd on now. Plenty of teams with more talent all around have done worse. Heck, there have been Leyland teams with far more balanced hitting that didn't come close to .500, so, as I said, nothing really matters until afyer the 4th? Why so panicky?

Best thing I can say about this season is: Go Dodgers!

But I'm glad CCN can be the voice of reason. Maybe I can watch again in July. This is too painful.

I need to make a major emotional shift when I watch this team, and scale it back to 1995-2005 expectations. The games would be much more enjoyable to watch. Baseball's intent is entertainment, is it not?

These games seem almost scripted. Once the Tigers lose a lead, that's the ball game. No chance whatsoever to come back. It was kind of fun to see the comeback on Sunday against the Twins, but the Twins are one of the worst teams in baseball. AND THANK DOG FOR THAT!!! Lordy lord how I dislike that team and want them to stay in the cellar like a box of '89 Topps wax packs.

Miguel and Justin and Prince are justifying their salaries. It's the supporting cast that's lacking. According to the law of averages, the Tigers should win tomorrow. By the same law, they should not be expected to score more than four runs. Not even in Fenway Park. Who knows what will transpire. Not me. But it should be entertaining. I need to remind myself of that.

I can't believe we took one of three from the Yankees. I'm not sure the Yankees can quite believe it either. How the Tigers didn't blow that middle game is beyond me.

We get a second shot at the Indians this week, and we need a good series to keep the Royals from taking over third place. If only the games WERE played on paper.

The Tigers are just one little 10-game winning streak from being where they were on April18. Hey, the White Sox just did it...All is possible.

Well, maybe not. Bad is bad. The Tigers won't be winning ten straight anytime soon. Ten RUNS would be nice though. Not in one game. The whole series.
    Go (practice your craft) Tigers.

3 runs against Phil Hughes and Ubaldo Jimenez.

You know how when pitchers give up home runs they shout into their gloves? Well I'm not wearing a glove...F this S! This team is not going to turn it around. Now I'll actually have to root for the Reds in the upcoming series, as the games actually mean something to them.

It looks like I'll have to start rooting for the Dodgers if I'm going to get any enjoyment out of this season.

Yes, as a fan of the game there's always something to watch. The Reds have always been my NL team, as I assume the Dodgers are yours.

I invest a lot of emotion into the Tigers and the Reds, and when it comes to a push me/pull me situation, I'll have to root for the team that can gain the most from the match-up. I hate inter-league play.

I remember going to an exhibition game between the Reds and Tigers at Tiger Stadium some time in early 1985 wearing a Reds hat and Tigers jersey and being, literally, the first fan in the park down to the dugout area for batting practice. With my sharpie pens and baseball cards, I was quite the nerd. The ushers gave me some razzing.

I remember those games! One game every May for a LONG time, the Tigers and Reds would play an exhibition game.

Turns out the Reds and Tigers are playing this weekend!

Now people can blame it on the DL. But they were playing crappy before the injuries.

    Another loss today.

I was thinking about going to the game tomorrow. I don't know if I should do that to myself.

I mentioned those Reds-Tigers games specifically because they meet this weekend.

And yes, the sky is falling...and the Tigers are completely useless as a team right now...and I still love 'em...but I hate 'em...but...but...

GO (to Toledo) BRENNAN BOESCH! WE LOVE (it when) YOU! (occasionally run into a fastball that just happens to be located in the spot where you've already determined, before the pitch is actually thrown, to swing, regardless of the count or the situation with runners on or anything, but the hack attack approach to hitting does get tiresome to watch from time to time.)

Wouldn't you know...as soon as I wrote that, Boesch starts to hit. Great American Mallpark or not, extra-base hits are extra base hits.

Now, about the state of the Tigers. They seem like a team built for the 1940s or 50s. All power, no speed. Actually, all PROJECTED power. Like a battleship. Slow and deliberate and outdated. That's what the first third of the season has revealed.

The Reds fouled off so many Verlander pitches yesterday that they had him out of the game after the sixth inning. Do you think that approach would EVER enter Delmon Young or Brennan Boesch's mind? I always hear Mario or Rod say that Leyland wants them to be aggressive and such and such and whatnot. At what point does this approach need to be re-examined? At what point is it accepted as the culture of the team effected by the manager and his coaches? Why do I think Austin Jackson's success has been smoke and mirrors, and that he's soon going to be striking out 4 times as much as he walks again?

Yes, they beat the Reds yesterday, and Valverde didn't implode. They won a close game. They also scored just three runs. All in all, it's nothing to write home about.

When they stop sinking a game or two under .500 every week, I'll see the fantasy black-light felt poster picture utopia that this season was supposed to represent. Until then....

great win by the tigers. that call was blown but still this was a great pitching outing and they might have won anyway.

however if leyland makes the WS that probably means he gets a lifetime contract in detroit. the owners of detroit just seem to love him no matter how whacky his decisions are, they did not even fire him after 08.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. – Dusty Baker.

It was a bad call and everyone knows it. But, as John Sterling noted quite a bit during the game, when the Yankees aren't hitting, one run can be the difference. The Tigers already had the run.

Think of it this way, dominik. The decade before Leyland was manager was beyond terrible for the franchise, one who only had a couple 100-loss seasons in their history before the mid-90's. Even with the disastrous 2008, things have been so much better under Leyland, a guy who earned his managerial chops in the Tigers system, he's going to get to leave on his terms. Unlike his other stops where he kind of bowed out when thigns were not going well, this is where he actually wants to be. Yeah, not a ringing endoresement for him, but as long as he's interested, he's staying. It still beats what we had before he finally got his dream job.

To be honest with you, as Spring Training is about to end, the news coming out of Detroit Tigers camp this week is not as exciting as new coming from the city's hockey team:

Red Wings Broadcaster, Hockey Hall Of Famer and record holder for most NHL games played by a defenseman, Larry Murphy is fired.
Hundreds of NHL players, both active and retired, pay tribute to Gordie Howe on the occasion of his 85th birthday on March 31. (Easter Sunday).

    Disgracefully the Red Wings let themselves get beaten 7-1 by the Chicago Black Hawks on Gordie Howe's 85th birthday celebration;

It's Time to start the 2013 Tigers thread!!!

That's how things are now. The Blackhawks are the team, the Wings are middle of the pack.

Which is why I disagree with your sentiment. The Tigers are the team in Detroit right now, and the more exciting story. But it was nice seeing Mr. Hockey honored. And to see him side by side with Ted Linday and Alex Delvecchio one more time.
