Bucs get the sweep today with a rare offensive explosion! 10-4 over the hapless Cubs. Now the first place Reds come to town, and the Bucs have a shot at getting back to 500 tomorrow. I hope the offensive performance today is a sign of things to come.

1st sweep since 2010. 4 game winning streak. Knock off the 1st place red hot Reds to reach .500. What a great holiday weekend. The Buccos face the Reds in 5 of their next 8 games. I am looking forward to that series in between vs the Brewers. Would be nice to head up there and take the series after how bad the Bucs have fared there.

I swear, it seems like every time we go up against Cincy we always pull Cueto and Bailey. Bailey won last night. When he is on the mound against the Bucs it's a sure loss. He is now 6-0 in 8 starts against us with an ERA of 1.79. The Reds took the other two games he didn't get a decision in. Mario Soto...ummm....I mean Johnny Cueto is on the mound tonight. He owns an 11-3 record with a 2.55 ERA vs the Pirates. Bailey owns us, but it's Cueto's name that makes me go UGH when I see his name pop up as our next opposing pitcher to face.

We are down one nothing right now. AJ is pitching a good game, hopefully we can get some runs on the board for him.

Back to .500. 7th series taken this season(3 splits). A winning record for the month of May, 15-13. The Buccos are now 14-9 in one run games.

AJ may have been a goat in NY, but he is pitching his tail off here in the Burgh. Outside of giving up 12 runs in 2.2 innings at the beginning of the month vs the Cards, he has given up 8 total runs in the 7 other ball games or 54.1 innings. At home he has pretty much been lights out. 3-0 in 5 starts, an ERA of 1.27.....all 5 games were Bucco wins.

The offense came to play. The Buccos are now a game over .500. Feels good putting a pounding on the Brewers after so many poundings the Pirates have taken at Miller Park.

    A few quick hits...

Finally the end has come to the Nate McLouth 2.0 experience. I guess the front office forgot that he lost his magic stick on their watch many moons ago.

It is time to send Pedro down. There is still an option to be used. I don't care about that stupid 13-3 record when he drives in a run thing they keep going on about over the air waves here. Same goes for all that power. Pedro has gone multi on the SO for the 16th time this season. This batting 4th thing has gone miserably bad. He has one HR since taking over the 4 spot nearly a month ago. Why do any talking about this subject? Here is his line.... .146/.226/.244

Power is lacking in our system. The only way we are gonna get a big bat in this lineup is via a trade. The FA route is a no go. We have a plethora a young pitching and too many every day ball players who resemble one another.....no patience, some speed, streaky as hell. They are of the opposite end of the spectrum from those Craig Wilson cut outs that used to run wild thru our system.

AJ Burnett has taken James McDonald under his wing and his pupil has came up all diamonds thus far. It all started with a game of catch. AJ told him if he didn't stop throwing the balls over his head and start hitting him between the shoulder he wasn't playing catch with him no more.

It is said that Charlie Morton has all the potential in the world. Charlie turns 29 this November. I think Charlie Morton has ran out of potential and soon to be out of a job.

As of right now....I love Rod Barajas. If he turns back into a pumpkin like in April, that feeling is subject to change.

Go Jordy!!! I don't expect alot out of you...just please hit enough to keep Barmes on the bench.

Coach, bat Tabata second. Not just for a game or two, keep him there for a while.....you can thank me later.

Neal, it's time....it's Rudy time. Make it happen. While you are at it, Cole and Taillon could use a bump up the ladder, Cole especially.

    Get em again tomorrow Buccos!

We have now taken 10 series thus far this season(3 splits). AJ was dynamite again. Cutch continues to be money when men are on base. In 9 games this month the Bucs have scored damn near half as many runs(44, 4.9 per) as they scored in 28 games last month(89, 3.2 per). That 44 is good enough for fourth best in the NL this month.

Nasty stat of the day..... With 4 successful stolen base attempts today by the Royals, the Buccos have now been victimized at a 92% clip. That number is by far the worst in baseball. The league average success rate is 72%. I love Barajas' bat of late, but his 5% CS% is down right nasty.....and not nasty in a good way.

Detroit just won, thank you Tigers. Cincy keeps on losing, thank you Reds and the Buccos have now made it to first place, be it a tie with the Reds. The times are good.

Is his arm that bad or are the pitchers slow to the plate. often this is also the pitchers fault although that rate suggests his arm is that bad. not all 5 starters can be so slow to the plate.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. – Dusty Baker.

AJ and J-Mac are very deliberate, the Royal guys were 3/4 of the way to 2nd by the time the ball got to Barajas, in the games I saw over the weekend. His arm isn't very accurate, many times this season, Barmes and Walker have had to catch the ball on the 3rd base side of the bag and have had to do their best to make the tag. I don't remember Rod airmailing any throws to Cutch in Center. I'd like to think Barajas' % will improve like his batting average, and at least get to double digits.

Nice bounceback this weekend by the Bucs after the debacle in Baltimore, and also squandering another quality start by J-Mac on Friday. I wish we could see more 21 run spurts over 2 games. Good job by the offense to come thru after another ineffective start from Lincoln (Karstens was throwing during BP in Cleveland, hopefully it means he's close to returning) Bullpen came thru with 5.1 innings of strong relief today. Now the Twins and Tigers come to PNC this week. Looking forward to the week ahead. I'm looking for the Bucs to win these 2 series, and get a few more games over 500.

The offense keeps coming. The Buccos are 3rd in the NL in R, RBI, HR, SLG and OPS in 15 games this month. 6th in H, 3B, AVG and OBP. 2nd in SB, 4th in TB and 5th in XBH.

I hope Lincoln has been given his last chance to start. He has shown time and time again that he doesn't have what it takes to be a starter. At this point in his career it is obvious that he belongs in the pen.

Minnesota, Detroit and Philly....after that, 18 of the Bucs 27 remaining series are against NL Central foes. 9 games each vs the Cards and Reds. 14 vs Houston. 12 vs the Brewers. 13 vs the Cubs.

Why is Jordy Mercer even here if they are not even gonna use em? I know Barmes is one of Hurdle's guys from Colorado, but c'mon....a few good games doesn't erase the fact that he is a terrible ballplayer.

We all know how Pedro has hit the past two games. He is getting all the press as he should be. There is another guy who moved down the lineup who is getting no action and that is Tabata. His line for the month is .302/.400/.419/.819. Over the past 7 games it reads .368/.455/.526/.981(These numbers were previous to yesterdays game where he went 1-1 with a double). Flying so far under the radar this has shown that not only chicks, but men in suits and radio talking heads dig the long ball.

Ryan Doumit is coming home. I am surprised he hasn't broken a nail yet. The season is still young though.

The Pirates are 13-8-3 in 24 series this season. They finish up inter-league play with a 10-8 record. The Buccos own the second best record and winning percentage in all of baseball at home thus far this season. They are 12-3 in their last 15 home games. Though we lost by a single run to the Tigers yesterday, we still own a positive 17-12 record in one run games. By outscoring our opponents this month 102-78, the Bucs are now within 5 runs of flipping that -5 run differential around for the season.

Karstens is making his comeback tonight(starting). Looks like Lincoln is headed back to the bullpen. One solid outting doesn't change my last response about him(see Charlie Morton). Should be an interesting game....Blanton has been touched for 35 ER in his last 7 appearances, 15 of them coming by way of homerun. The bad news is the Phillies have won 4 of those 7 games and Blanton's horses are giving him great run support.

Since I have last referenced Barajas' arm, he has been victimized 5 more times. It's one thing to be victimized by speedsters, but when you are getting robbed by players who don't run at all or hardly ever, that says it all. In Barajas we trust though....the Buccos are now 9-12 when McKenry starts. That is 16-33 in his last 49 games back there. All Tony gotta do is find his stick in AAA and McKenry is gone.

I wonder if all them cry babies on the FAN noticed we picked Drew Sutton back up. We signed him then flipped him to Tampa Bay. He went on to pick up 3 multiple hit games in a row. 6 for 11 in his first 3 outtings. Only to go 7-37(.189) the rest of the way until being waived. Those cats went on forever about how stupid we were and how we needed that bat. Right around that time our offense came alive....We have gone 18-9 since then. We were 4 games under .500 at that time. Not only do I wonder if they notice or even care now, but I also wonder if this was a move to cateer to those whiners....hmmmm?

With that said....Bye Bye Jordy Mercer. Hello Bryan Morris, the last of the Jason Bay trade, unfortunately he couldn't cut it as a starter. He will be a solid pen guy though.

By beating the Cards today, the Bucs are now 9-1-1 in their last 11 series. The Pirates have finished off the month of June with a 17-10 record. The last time the Buccos scored 140+ runs in a month was in May of 2008 when they scored 148(this squad finished with 146). Cutch has posted back to back awesome months going .370/.420/.676/1.096 this month. He keeps this up our dear leader will be picking up a new chant from the fans....M-V-P !!! He is holding his own at home and away.

I'll be back later when all the games are finished with more stuff. Here is something to chew on....As it stands now, the Buccos have one more HR than the Dbacks for the month of June. If that holds or even with a tie, the Pirates will finish at the top of the NL leaderboard for HR this month. Crazy isn't it?

The Pirates 42-35 record after their first 77 games is their best start since 1992 when they went 44-33. Since 1977 the Pirates have only topped the 2012 record at this point 3 other times, 1988(43-34), 1990(46-31) and 1991(47-30).

The Buccos have not lost a game in AJ's last 10 starts. Burnett is 8-0 in that span.

Has JMac really came out of nowhere this season? From April 27th to July 25th last season he went 6-2 with the Buccos winning 8 of his 11 starts. He went on to only win 2 of his remaining 11 starts. In 7 of those starts he gave up 3 or less runs.

Pedro had a great half of month. It is said that they started having him swing for the opposite end of the field. Whatever they did it has worked for him. He batted .260 for the month, but .360 for the final 14 games. OBP for June was .354, final 14 was .448. Slugging for June .571, final 14 was .860. He is on fire. I wanna see him stay in the 6 spot a little longer.

It's nice to see Garrett Jones hitting again.

Casey McGehee has been a pleasant surprise of late. I will admit that I wasn't very excited when we picked him up. I also didn't expect to get a whole lot out of him. If only he could conquer PNC Park.

Neil Walker has been hitting like he did in 2010, which is a plus.

So now for the month of June team stat rankings....

The Buccos finished first in the NL in runs scored, HR and RBI. They finished 3rd in AVG, SLG, OPS and TB. Fourth in H, OBP and XBH. A round of an applause for our boys swinging the lumber.

Oh and I almost forgot....A 17-10 record for the month of June is good enough for a winning percentage of .630. That number was tops for the month in the NL.

A salute goes out to the boys in the pen for holding it down thus far.

One last note, our run differential is now in the positive.....+7. There is only one team out there that gives up less runs than the Buccos and that is Washington.

This is fun! Clutch come-from-behind win by the Bucs tonight, capped off by Drew Suttons first Bucco homer in dramatic 9th inning walk-off fashion. This is the furthest over 500 the Bucs have been this late in the year since '92. It's coming together....

Cutch has 33 hits in his past 16 games. In that same span he has 18 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 6 jacks and 17 RBI. He picked up his 28th multi hit game this season. 11th with 3 or more(6 three hit games, 5 four hit games). Because of where he calls home and how well he is hitting....I am gonna say it.....Right now he is the MVP of the NL. No questions asked. Oh and he has overtaken Ruiz for the batting lead. He is 4th in OBP, 2nd in SLG and OPS....I am interested to see how much he gains on Votto in OPS+, OWn% and wOBA after things get updated. When it comes to WAR for just the stick, he is number one.

We have now homered in 11 straight games. It's hard to believe that this is the same team that was deprived of power and batting .214 as a whole only a couple months ago. With 3 more jacks today we are now 5th in the NL. 24 more bombs and we will match our total from last year.

It's great having the hitting to back up the pitching when they are in a rut. And with better pitching this season(especially on the front end) the same can be said vice versa. That to me is what is gonna be the difference this time around.

In their last 36 game, the Pirates have gone 24-12(14-3 home, 10-9 away). They have outscored their opponents 190(5.3) to 140(3.9). In that same span we have hit 48 HR or 13 more homers than they had hit in the previous 44 games.

The Buccos started this ride with a line of .217/.266/.346/.612. Since then it has been .272/.332/.456/.788. As for balls and strikes we are walking 2.8 times per game, up from 2.1 per and striking out 7.9 times per game, down from 8.5 per.

The Bucs have now won 45 games after playing 81 games this season. The last time that figure was topped was back in 1991 when they got to 45 after playing 72.

The homerun steak ended at 11.

The Buccos have scored 3 or more runs in a single inning for the 8th straight game.

They have done this in 19 games dating back to June 1st(31 games). A feet they achieved in only 5 games in their previous 50.

Lets see.... Starling Marte has been hot as all hell. He gets shifted from center to RF for the first time this year on Monday. Tbats gets sent down. Slap hitting speedster/defensive dynamo Gorkys Hernandez gets the call up(see you on web gems tonight). This can only mean one thing.

See you soon Starling. Congrats on making the All Star team(AAA).

It was May 23rd.... The Buccos came off a 3-1 loss to the Mets, dropping them to 4 games below .500(20-24) and 5 games back in the division. From that point on they have been one of the hottest teams in baseball. It's been a tale of two seasons. I got to wondering what the rest of baseball was doing in that time(wins and losses). Well here is what I have come up with(in the order they are ranked in the current standings)....

    AL East
    NY Yankees 26-11 (.703)
    Baltimore 16-20 (.444)
    Tampa Bay 16-21 (.432)
    Boston 20-18 (.526)
    Toronto 18-19 (.486)

    AL Central
    Chicago Sox 22-15 (.595)
    Cleveland 17-21 (.447)
    Detroit 20-19 (.513)
    Kansas City 19-18 (.514)
    Minnesota 20-18 (.526)

    AL West
    Texas 23-14 (.622)
    LA Angels 25-12 (.676)
    Oakland 19-19 (.500)
    Seattle 14-24 (.368)

    NL East
    Washington 21-14 (.600)
    NY Mets 20-18 (.526)
    Atlanta 16-20 (.444)
    Miami 15-19 (.441)
    Philadelphia 15-23 (.395)

    NL Central
    Pittsburgh 25-12 (.676)
    Cincinnati 20-18 (.526)
    St. Louis 18-20 (.474)
    Milwaukee 20-17 (.541)
    Houston 11-27 (.289)
    Chicago Cubs 16-21 (.432)

    NL West
    LA Dodgers 16-23 (.410)
    San Francisco 22-16 (.579)
    Arizona 19-17 (.528)
    San Diego 17-21 (.447)
    Colorado 15-23 (.395)

4 game sweep of the Astros completed!! First 4 game sweep of the Astros in Pittsburgh since July of '79! Jeff Karstens is back! 8 innings, 8K's, and only 4 hits given up. And to boot he also singled and scored in the 3rd to help himself out. Now the Bucs are 10 over 500, bring on the Giants this weekend!!
    LETS GO BUCS!!
