    Jerry Lynch and Jay Ward, former Reds players, pass away

    Lynch:

    For years, former Pirates Jerry Lynch and Dick Groat were business partners. On Sunday, Groat mourned the loss of his "dear friend."

    "He was the best. We were partners in business for over 60 years," Groat said of Lynch, who died early yesterday at an Atlanta hospital. He was 81.

    No cause of death was revealed. Groat said Lynch, an outfielder who spent two stints with the Pirates and once held the major league record for career pinch-hit home runs, had been ailing since October.

    Ward:

    John (Jay) F. Ward, former major-league baseball player, hitting coach and minor-league manager, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 24, 2012, at the age of 73.

    He and his wife Lynn were living in Troy, Montana, where he enjoyed his retirement years hunting and fishing.

    Jay, son of John and Francis Ward, was born in Brookfield, Mo., on Sept. 9, 1938. He attended Mountain Grove High School in Mo., and eventually graduated from Highland High School in Illinois in 1956.

    Lynch was a very nice guy! I met him several times at RedsFest and he was always very cordial. I knew that he was in bad health because he was not at RedsFest in December. RIP Mr. Lynch and Mr. Ward.
