    What's your favorite Mets Player/Season

The Amazing Mets "Whats your favorite team other than 1969 or 1986" thread got me thinking about it and mine is not one most would choose

    Lance Johnson's 1996 is mine.

The guy was exciting as all hell. 227 hits, 21 triples, 50 stolen bases, 117 runs scored, .333 batting average.

The best all around season by a Mets CF ever.

That was a great season. We had alot of "one hit wonders" in the 90's. Remember Bernard Gilkey's 1996? .317 Avg, 30 HR, 117 Rbi, 17 Sb.
unknown brooklyn cabbie " how are the brooks doin"
unknown fan "good they got three men on base"
    unknown brooklyn cabbie "which one?"

And that's why 1996 is one of my favorite seasons

I think Beltran's 2006 may have been better as a CF, but Johnson's was incredible. I remember it well, despite not being a Mets fan.

John Olerud's 1998 season was unbelievable too - very underrated imo.

Take your pick: Seaver '69 25-7 2.21 era ? '71 20-10 1.76 ?? '73 19-10 2.08 ??? '75 22-9 2.38 ???? These are four career seasons ! The absolute best right handed pitcher I ever saw play. While I really liked Jerry Koosman, I used to plan to go to Shea around the Mets rotation to see Seaver. Even saw him pitch a one hitter in '77 before he was traded.....a bloop hit that fell in front of Kranepool in RF....yes, right field...a bloop anyone else on the team including Kingman easily gets to.......

Favorite season---- 1984 or 1985. Finally the Mets were on the map, and with Gooden, Straw, and Keith we had players worth watching

Oh I almost forgot - favorite player was Strawberry and nobody else is even close

I'd have to say Keith Hernandez is my all-time favorite Met. As for the season, I have a soft spot for 1974. Don't ask me why.
    Put it in the books.

You, me, and a lot of other kids used to plan to visit Shea when Seaver pitched.

Beltran had an amazing 2006. Though to me he wasn't as electrifying as Johnson was in 1996.

One of the reason's '96 is a favorite year of mine is they were the Bizzarro Mets. Terrific offense and horrible pitching. They went nowhere and were a gas to watch

Cleon Jones - 1969 is my choice. He was my favorite player, it was his best year. Hit .340 with a .422 OBP and some power and speed, fine defense. Great player.

Second fave: Straw. Third: Jose Reyes.

Among the position players this is!

I'm still partial to Gooden's 84/85 seasons. You will never convince me there was a bettter pitcher than Gooden was in 1985 (unless it was Guidry in '78).

I like the Bizaro Mets for 1996 so many guys having out of their mind seasons. What about Todd Hundley breaking the single season record for HR by a catcher. Of course with hindsight that era, to me, is distasteful and the videogame numbers explicable. But it was fun at the time.

Bob Gibson 1968 : 1.12 era 13 shut outs. 304 2/3 innings pitched. 1964/1967/1968 WS 9 starts. 9 complete games. 7-2 record era 1.89 versus the likes of a NYY dynasty, a triple crown winner, and a team with a 30 game winner. 92 strike outs in 81 innings. True , Gibson did not pitch for the Mets.....

Well OK, maybe I should have thrown in some caveats.

like i mentioned in my other thread Gooden's 1985 season is the greatest i have personally seen. My favorite player season in history. Mike Piazza in 2000 is probably my second favorite.

Wasn't the pitching mound lowered after 1968? I think Gooden's '85 season is on par with Gibson's '68 season and probably even better, all things considered.

Several- Clearly Gooden's and Seaver's Cy Young years- Olerud in 1998- Season a SABR guy would lover, Beltran in 06. Loved Strawberry's 1988 season (his best). Piazza and Edgardo Alfonso in 1999.
Finally..Loved Jerry Kossman winning 20 in 1976. Think the entire world was rooting for him to get 20.

Any year with Strawberry. Had a black glove, painted my wiffle ball bat black, tried to learn how to hit lefty. When they traded him the Mets fell off my radar till about 96. I always watched, like I do now. I just didn't care as much. Thankfully the Knicks and Rangers were able to buoy my spirit.
A fish stinks from the head down. Sell the Mets.

Funny, with a handle like Bklyn '55 I thought you would have been older.

It's good you honor baseball history with your handle

Thanks. I'm an old soul and a Brookynite so it seemed accurate (I do have a NY Baseball Giants hat though. Don't kill me Dodger fans). I just love baseball history and history in general.

Same here. I got tons of old Brooklyn and Giants stuff. Hats, jerseys, books, team photos hanging in the cave, etc. I love New York history in the early half of the century.

My favorite Mets player all-time is Mike Piazza, and my favorite season from him is 1999.

People tend to see his 2000 campaign as his best one while with the Mets. True enough, his batting average, OPS, Slug, Ab/Hr, and many stats were better in 2000 than 1999.

But the thing is in 1999 he was able to rack up the counting stats. He matched his career highs in homeruns and RBI, and he got 100R scored. There was also the novelty of 1999 being his first full season in a NY Mets uniform. It was in this season that people realized that the Mets had a bonafide superstar, one they never had before and may never have again.

If he didn't go through that bitter September slump in 2000, then that might have been my favorite. But alas, he did slump hard, and thus I like 1999 the most.
