It was Larry Lucchino who thought otherwise.

Why he thought Valentine was a better choice than Sveum or just about anybody else for that matter is still entirely beyond me. Oh well. I guess for 2013 Bogar will get the gig for a year before Farell will return (or maybe that's just me daydreaming...).
Watching Derek Jeter make 40 defensive plays and then watching Adam Everett make 40 defensive plays at the same position is sort of like watching video of Barbara Bush dancing at the White House, and then watching Demi Moore dancing in Striptease. (Bill James)

Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power. If he can continue to hit .260 or so, he'll be useful, and he probably has a future as a backup infielder. (Keith Law)

Do you guys see that too? It's not a strong foundation that buster olney builds his argumentation on, but if this is true, the Red Sox have to cut valentine or others. Maybe Schilling was right after all, when he said in April, that things have turned for the worse quicker than he had imagined.

    1. What does Bobby V have against Kevin Youkilis anyway?
    2. The Red Sox are playing the Marlins again tonight. I suggest getting La Melaza to pop up on the infield, he has a tendency to do that.

I would love to see the Marlins lose again tonight.

I would not get all wrapped up in what the media says about the Red Sox. Are there some pain in the arses on this team? Yup. The first thing to do is send Lackey home. Tell him to report to training camp next year and get him the hell off the bench. He is poison. He has too much influence on Beckett IMO...and looks like Buchholz is the little brother of the group and gets sucked in as well...but the toxic poison is Lackey.

Not surprisingly the bad clubhouse story was completely overblown!
Olney said when Valentine and the players defended the clubhouse Tuesday, they were being asked about something Olney didn't write about.

"I didn't write that the players were having a problem with each other at all and I absolutely don't believe that," Olney said. "Based on what I saw I don't think there's any indication for that."

Explained Olney: "What I wrote was, and I 100 percent stand behind it, is that there's an incredible unhappiness in that clubhouse with issues of communication and how some situations have been handled. That absolutely I stand by 100 percent. It's to a degree that I have rarely seen in covering this sport for 25 years."

so, it looks like his problem is with Bobby V. Who cares what Onley says anyway. Bobby V has done a pretty good job and the players need to get on board or go play for another team. Spoiled divas

    Guys,

I had the opportunity to buy tickets for the Red Sox-Yankees-series in early July at Fenway. Now I have a loge-box ticket in the infield too many for the Sunday night game, July 8th. Sec 12/B101; Row AA. Seat 1. Those are premium seats. I had to buy four, this was part of the deal. We are three guys. The listed ticket price at redsox.com was 95$.

I know, this is an unusual way, but I want to give one of you message board buddies the opportunity to buy the ticket for the listed price. Would be cool! Otherwise it will be sold to a random guy around lansdowne street...

Write me a message if you are interested.

Every time I think I'm out, they pull me back in!

The Sox are on quite run right now. With Atlanta coming to town, can they keep it up, or are we going to go into another week-long tailspin that leaves them at .500 or under with more days crossed off on the calendar?

Guess who's batting line this is:
    BA OBP SLG wOBA WAR
    .340 .455 .519 .425 1.9

    That's a .973 OPS. Absolutely amazing!

I urge everybody to read this Ken Rosenthal article and tell me again they think Valentine was a good choice or is doing a good job.

If Magadan and/or Tuck leave the Red Sox because of disruptions between coaching staff and manager, then I will finally occupy Yawkey Way until not only Valentine but also Lucchino are gone!

He is doing a VERY good job!

seems to me you have joined the witch hunt to get Bobby out of Boston (#firebobbyvalentine). That is the problem with Boston, the media runs the show. You are either with them or they will get you. Unless you are actually in the day to day operations at Fenway, it is pure media speculation and drumming up business for themselves. I call bull on this article. How about being a fan and cheering for everyone to collectively do well. There always has to be drama with the Red Sox...and it is all media driven. you are better than this Therwil

Boxer, I haven't joined the witch hunt, I started it! The media is (and has been since day 1) divided on Valentine. Cafardo, for example, has been beating the drum for Bobby since before he was hired, others have been more critical of him. There is nothing in between.

Rosenthal doesn't strike me as the guy who is particularly biased in his writing. I'm sure that the article blows a few things out of proportion, but if there is just a grain of truth to the article, that should have every fan worried.

Magadan is an excellent hitting coach and Garry Tuck is hands down the best catching instructor/bullpen coach in the game. If they leave and Bobby stays I will be pissed.

As to whether Bobby V makes a good job (aside from whether he divides the clubhouse and/or staff) is up to debate. I might be biased, but I am honestly far from impressed. Or what have I missed?

Sure the team has had an insane amount of injuries and yet they are still in the hunt for october. But, so has every other team in the AL East! Look at the Yankees, who have lost Rivera, Pineda, Gardner, Joba and many others. Look at Toronto and their starting rotation. Look at the Rays.

And yes, you could give him credit for how goos Saltalamacchia, Ross or Nava have been, but then you would have to blame him for the lousy season Gonzalez, Youkilis and others have (I, personally, don't think you can credit nor blame a manager for a player's performance, although he might have some influence on it).

Also please don't get me wrong, I'm not negative about the Red Sox this season - never have been - I still believe we will play in the postseason. And I will continue to cheer for all 10 players on the field and the 15 on the bench (or in the pen)!

Rumor of the day is Youk to the white sox. Who could we possibly be targeting on the white sox?

I expect a trade to be announced any time now with the White Sox apparently a front runner, though I’ve heard the Indians, Dodgers and Braves and others have been scouting him as well.

I’m not sure what they might get in trade for Youk, but from what I’ve read it may only be a B prospect and that’s if the Sox pay most of Youkilis salary. This is sad because I really think Youk can bounce back and hit well and thus we should receive a decent return but unfortunately he just hasn't hit all that well.

But as much as I like Youk, (and he’s been one of my favorite players) with him not performing that well and because Middlebrooks is undoubtedly the future at 3rd, it probably makes the most sense to trade Youk rather have him or Middlebrooks sit on the bench. And from what I’ve read BV plans to play the hot bat which has been Middlebrooks.

Now having said that, it won’t surprise me if Youk does get traded, that he starts hitting like the Youkilis of a few years ago. I’ll also add that if he gets traded, I will wish him the best of luck, except if he plays against the Sox!

    Daniel Bard is officially staying in the pen, at least for this year. Bard came to the conclusion that he should pitch in relief. Here are a few quotes from Bard;

"It felt like that was what I was meant to do is pitch late in games. My skill set and my experience is built for that type of role.

"Everyone I've talked to, including how I feel myself, knows I can be a good starter, but I already know I'm a great reliever.''

"Maybe that's what I was meant to do, and I'll try to embrace it from here on out," he said.
    http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index...l_bard_is.html

I think Bard pitching in relief is the best option at this time for him and the team, so I’m glad Bard came to this conclusion.

But with our relievers pitching pretty well so far and with Bailey set to come back after the AS game perhaps in August, once Bard straightens himself out in AAA we may have too many good relievers, so barring injuries or a sudden poor performance by one or two, it could be that two relief pitchers will have to go, probably in a trade.

I think Bard to the pen is best for everyone.

i expect a pretty good trade to go down before the deadline. We will have a few good extra outfielders and some surplus of pen guys...maybe that gets us a desent #4 or #5 guy for the stretch run and future

    Speaking of Bard and Valentine:

"Daniel Bard got a voice mail from Bobby Valentine earlier this week, the Red Sox manager confirming that the righthander was heading back to the bullpen.

Valentine apparently thought that Bard had already had a conversation with general manager Ben Cherington regarding the issue.

He hadn’t. But no matter. It was the same decision Bard had come to on his own over his last few outings in Pawtucket."

Left him a voicemail before he'd talked to the GM? Told him he was going to the pen in a voicemail instead of speaking to him personally? Ugh.

That being said, I was a big fan of Bard in the rotation, but it clearly wasn't working. If he can get back to being the reliever he can be, that's a HUGE boost to the Sox in the second half.

It also might free up a bullpen arm to trade. If we can get a prospect for one of the spare arms in the pen, you gotta love that.

It speaks volumes about communication between manager and front office!
I have never been a fan of Bard to the starting rotation, but early on in the season I thought he might make it work and should be given a chance. It's too bad it didn't work out but having Bard back in the pen sure is a huge boost to the pen.
