I like the top of the lineup of Ellsbury, Crawford, Pedroia, Ortiz, and Gonzalez. If Crawford has his surgery then it will have to wait until next year.

Crawford NEEDS to have the surgery now so he can be ready for next season IMO.

Agreed. With a six-month recovery time for position players having Tommy John, it's crazy to have Crawford risk missing the start of next season because he played in September in this lost season. Everyone seems to understand that except the Red Sox management.

I didn't realize we had the smartest man in baseball and a philosophical catcher. Molecular biophysics and molecular chemistry were Breslow's majors. Philosophy was Lavarnway's major, and that often is the path to law school.

I'd love to hear the two of them chatting on the mound about how they want to pitch to Swisher.

Maybe we make THEM co-GM's and see if they can't fix this team. If anyone can do it, two geniuses seems like a good bet!

I watched Ichiro hit two HR.

    I feel nothing.

    I am numb.

For all intents and purposes this season is all over

No he's just a troll. Ignore him.
Watching Derek Jeter make 40 defensive plays and then watching Adam Everett make 40 defensive plays at the same position is sort of like watching video of Barbara Bush dancing at the White House, and then watching Demi Moore dancing in Striptease. (Bill James)

Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power. If he can continue to hit .260 or so, he'll be useful, and he probably has a future as a backup infielder. (Keith Law)

with all the negative talk you should acknowledge the moster year papi is having.

he looked like he was done in 09 but has really turned it around since then. he is by far the best sox hitter this year hitting .316/.414/.609 leading the league in OBP and slugging (of course OPS too). his OPS+ is 167. and he is really carrying the sox offense.

this is very good of course but also a little bit alarming for next season(if he is having a career year and still they are not winning-I made the same remarks about becketts career year last season when overly optimistic sox fans just factored which pitcher came back and not a potential decline to the norm of beckett). if they don't bring him back or he declines this offense is really in trouble. of course some players will come back but the loss of their best hitter would negate a lot of this. so papi needs to be back next season if the red sox want to be contenders.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. – Dusty Baker.

We'll see. I take his good year with a grain of salt, given how the team's overall performance is going. Cody Ross is tearing it up as well but it doesn't mean jack diddly if nothing is going to come of it.

One can handle the pitchers and the other one can handle the position players. We can use Bill James' salary to buy a starting pitcher because who needs him with two Ivy Leaguers in charge. I might just put your idea in the Suggestion Box on Yawkey Way next time I am in the neighborhood.

I heard Lavarnway gives up to 55 different signs when Breslow is pitching.

Why only 55 signs somebody asked? Because Lavarnway doesn't have more than five fingers in either of his hands.

    Not hard to figure out.

    Valentine went crying to Lucchino

Lucchino then ordered Cherington to fire McClure.

You can bet that Valentine NEVER spoke to Cherington.

Par for the course for Valentine.

Who cares? McClure had to go anyway.

Valentine will follow him after the season is over.

This should be first step of cleaning house on management and, hopefully, the cleaning house of players begins after the season.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the team thinks Valentine is a long-term solution. They had hired McClure before they hired Valentine, not a real smart way to do things. Still, if I had to pick one to fire, it wouldn't have been McClure.
