Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power. If he can continue to hit .260 or so, he'll be useful, and he probably has a future as a backup infielder. (Keith Law)

I was actually at the game last night. What was interesting was how the Angel fans reacted to this Boston team. They seemed almost disappointed that the stars are mostly gone. There were plenty of sox fans in the stadium, as there always are. A few "let's go Red Sox" chants went up. Being a bosox fan in socal one is far from alone.
The two kids on the left side of the infield looked good defensivley.
Pedroia hit the ball hard several times, and was always hustling. He is one of the few players from this last era who I have use for. I would like to see him injury free next year. Salti seems like our only real power threat with Ortiz out. The homerun he hit left in a hurry.
Bucholz looked pretty ordinary, as he has all year. He actually looked ok most of the way, he just made a couple of mistakes that the Angels pounced on.
Mike Trout blew me away. The homer he hit was a monster. He made some nice catches in center, and he hustles everywhere. He was even better than his billing, if that's even possible.
I don't like Aceves, and it pains me to root for him. It doesn't shock me that he couldn't get the job done.
It is really amazing how different things are from a year ago. From the best team in baseball, to this......
I am actually glad the trade got done. I'm sorry to see Gonzales go, but I don't think he would have been quite worth the money, although he would have been close. I was glad to get rid of Crawford, as I never understood that deal. Sometimes the best move is passing on signing someone, and waiting until the market is better. Crawford came out in a down year for outfielders, and was badly overpaid because of that. While this deal might doom them in the short term, this team was not going anywhere. It might be a few years of futility, but with payroll space the sox might be able to get someone we really want, although I don't know who that would be at this point.
oh gawd, please do not trade for Mauer. that would be a bad signing
"I believe in the Church of Baseball. I tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance." ~Ron Shelton, from Bull Durham
Oh boy, I think sports writers are becoming dumber and dumber. The Red Sox, in a historic deal, just got rid of their three biggest contracts so they regain payroll flexibility. In the process they gave away one of the best 1B of the game. All that to take on an even more ridiculous albatross of a contract? I mean come on!

Jon Mauer means much more to the Twins than he would for the Red Sox or any other team.

So here's the thing with Aceves and the first Angels game. He goes out there for the 8th, and then Valentine leaves him in for the 9th. He could have pulled him at most any point in the inning and while the Sox still could have lost the ballgame, the more likely scenerio is that we hang on to win or go to extras.
Why would he do this, especially since there's only been one 2-inning save in all of baseball this season!?!?!? I'll tell you why, 'cause Bobby V will make his point, even if it means losing the ballgame. I really believe he left Aceves in there to suffer, to show everyone that he's the boss and he's running the show. After that game, he lost any shred of respect that I still had for him.
The biggest offseason move, IMO, will be to get a new manager.
I have no words.
NO HANDBALL PLAYING IN THIS AREA

Can we say that this organization is in complete free fall now?
No. The team is in a "get this over with as quickly as possible"-mode. The manager for the millionth time this season is incapable of doing anything about it. At best the Red Sox are playing for a top 10 draft pick (that would be the first time since 1993; the draft class, btw, is said to be even weaker than last year's).
This organization is 29 games away from a fresh start!

Interview with Tom Werner. I read this very much as Ben Cherington is here to stay, Bobby Valentine will be gone after the season. The latter shouldn't be surprising. Except for Lucchino, no one in the organization really wanted Valentine in the first place.

I pretty much agree with TF....while the product on the field isn't going to get any better this year, the team is now moving in the right direction.
Remember, it was only about 30 days ago that the team was this awful and was thinking about expending prospect resources to trade for players to try to help THIS year. Oh, and they had a ton of contract commitments. And a lot of talented young players were buried in AAA.
Now, the team has realized that this is a lost year. They shed those contracts in a historic deal. The young guys are playing so the team can see what it has for the future.
The manager will be gone after this year. I have little doubt. Someone better suited for the team will come in (actually picked by baseball ops...imagine that!) and the team will get back to the philosophy that gave us 2004 and 2007 (hopefully).

I think MD and TF are right to correct me...the organization did make a great move in unloading bad contracts and getting ready for a reset. I was thinking of the team on the field seeming to crater, but it doesn't matter too much how many games they win the rest of this season. They've got some player sorting to do.

Aceves is a strange dude...did anyone see the 4th inning? WTF
It really was amazing to watch. It was almost surreal, like watching a trainwreck that you somehow knew was going to happen.
To touch more in restraint, think back to the late 90's. The sox sign Nomar to a pre-free agent contract which gives us some great production from him. They sign Pedro, and let Mo Vaughn go. I loved Vaughn, and hated to lose him, but it ended up working out. Two years later They sign Manny Ramirez. Do they sign Manny AND Vaughn? I don't know, but avoiding Vaughn and waiting for someone great was a wise move. It certainly worked in their favor. I wish they had used similar restraint and avoided Crawford.
Your 2013 Boston Red Sox Manager: Arnie Beyeler?
I read this puff piece on Beyeler today. And while it's nonsense to judge on somebody from one article alone, I ask why not?
hatever he has to work with – whether kids coming up from Double-A Portland, major leaguers on rehab assignments or, like struggling pitcher Daniel Bard, trying to find themselves, or bona fide, Triple-A prospects – Beyeler gets the job done.
“This is my 33rd year in Pawtucket,” general manager Lou Schwechheimer said, “and – player, coach, or manager – Arnie is the hardest working guy I’ve ever seen in a PawSox uniform. I watch him every single day and he does not stop.”A hard working, selfless manager who has a relationship with many players on the team but isn't part of the mess. A guy who has a track record of being good at developing prospects while having his team contend. A guy who's well respected by players but isn't a players' manager. Sounds perfect, no?“Arnie’s done a phenomenal job,” Tamburro said. “He has great respect for the game. And he’s the most unassuming guy you’d ever come across. It’s his selflessness that I respect the most. It’s never about him. He’s all about making the players better.”
And the players appreciate it.
“Every player in that clubhouse respects Arnie,” Schwechheimer said. “They love playing for the guy.”
Which is not to say that Beyeler deserves the sometimes dreaded label of being a “players manager.”
