Just read Daniel Nava was called up and is playing LF and batting 6th tonight.
another sell out crowd on hand at Fenway. All 7500 fans are letting Beckett hear it as they boo him off the field in the 3rd. On a good note, Bobby V was cheered when he came out to get Beckett. This is pretty bad folks
Josh Beckett pitched 2.1 innings, gave up 7 runs, 7 hits and 2 home runs.
It's time to bring Cody Ross out to pitch.

NO HANDBALL PLAYING IN THIS AREA
Yup. I'm not defending the crowd at Fenway but I think frustration is setting in and with Beckett playing golf when he was supposedly injured only added to their frustration. I was hoping after all this negative media attention on this golf issue that Beckett would come out pitching really well but unfortunatly he didn't, so the crowd let him have it.
On the plus side, the bullpen continues to be pretty decent (at least in low pressure situations). Other than that, ugh! The stretch of massive suckitude continues!
Watching Derek Jeter make 40 defensive plays and then watching Adam Everett make 40 defensive plays at the same position is sort of like watching video of Barbara Bush dancing at the White House, and then watching Demi Moore dancing in Striptease. (Bill James)
Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power. If he can continue to hit .260 or so, he'll be useful, and he probably has a future as a backup infielder. (Keith Law)
The bullpen getting taxed constantly due to this horrible starting pitching. Injuries aren't the issue with the rotation to me. Our front three are the problem. They have been either ungodly awful or just okay. Not exactly what you expect. Your four and five starter are better than your front three. Honestly, offense is fine and the bullpen straighten itself out, but this starting pitching been pathetic and since the start. This team lacks a stopper since Lester, who i view as the team's ace, just been very average since last September. Becket been good or terrible. Buchholz has just been the worst starter in MLB. Ellsbury being out does hurt, but he's not going to stop Buchholz and Beckett from giving up 6-8 runs per start. Not to look down on Matsuzaka, but he hasn't exactly been the Matsuzaka of 2008 in a long time, but I believe most of us wish him back since could be much worse than these guys?
Buchholz rolling his 9.00 plus ERA out there tonight. This should go well. I stand corrected. I seen something worse than John Lackey of 2011. Clay Buccholz has masterfully top him in month plus in 2012 so far. I'm just shocked. I expect rocky numbers, like Bard and Doubant, coming back from injury. But this as just been unbelievable. Of course, Beckett and Lester haven't picked him up so far this year while they did pick up Lackey last year by pitching so well after April.
This starting pitching just been so frustrating to watch all season for me.
Something tells me that come July 31, we will be active in the trade market...but we'll be getting prospects instead.....
Man, do I *HATE* the Yankees!!!!!!
I think we - and more importantly the Red Sox organization and the team - need to stop with the injury bug excuse! Yes, the Red Sox have been hit hard by injuries. And yes, a struggling team will be hit harder by injuries than a hot team. But other teams have injuries as well and their performance isn't as dismal as the Red Sox's!
The Yankees have their no.2 starter, their closer, their starting LF and a bunch of other relievers and bench players on the DL. They are not 12-19! While only in 4th place in the AL East, they have a winning record, are only 2.5 games out of first and 5games ahead of the last place Sox!
The Rays have a bunch of guys on the DL, including their closer and best hitter. They are not 12-19! Instead they are tied for first place in the AL east, a whooping 7.5 games ahead of the Sox!
I don't expect a team with that many injuries to play .600 baseball. But I expect a 170+ million dollar team to hang in there even when some of their supposed star players are on the DL! I most certainly expect them to still be able not to loose series against KC, OAK and the likes (no offense to those teams)!
I'm sick of staying up late (different time zone) to watch them play like no one gives a **** (with very few exceptions)!

Let's see where they stand in July. but if they are still in last place and have no significant shot at making the playoffs, you have to at least think about it. It is still waaay to early for such talk, but I assume Youkilis (contract up after season, team option), Matzusaka (contract up after season), Beckett (two more years at $17m after season), and Ross (FA after season) would be candidates.
That we even think about this right now says everything about this season, doesn't it!

Re: Beckett
While the ever objective Boston media is (once again) all out to character-assassinate another Red Sox player and the "fanbase" (once again) follows suit by calling for him to be dumped and whatnot, I suggest people read this instead of worrying about golf swings...

I am not a Red Sox fan, but I have lived near Boston for 56 years. I think those who are happy to crucify Beckett are similar to those who felt that way about Ted Williams in seasons past. When Williams was re-called into Naval Aviation in 1950, some of the "knights of the keyboard", as he called them, wondered why he should be honored for cutting his baseball career even shorter by fighting in the Korean War.
Now we have radio and TV commentators like Dennis and Callahan, who think they understand both sports and character, eager to pillory people because it's probably good for their ratings.
Fans need to root for their teams through thick and thin. I don't mean blind adulation, but enough of pundits who don't know what the hell they are talking about.
Whatever happens now that Bucholz is pulled, Valentine still has the leaving-the-starting-pitcher-too-long-on-the-mound disease. Bucholz was in the mid 90 pitch count after six innings, and a bunch of lefties coming up. You had to pull him with Rich Hill warming, but no, he has to load the bases and get up to 115 pitches to convince Valentine that he is done. Bucholz' start was so-so, but with good results, which is good for his confidence.
In fact:
Bucholz never faced a right handed hitter in this game! I don't know if I ever saw that.

Reminds me of Grady Little circa 2003. The pen sucked early in the year, but then got a lot better, but he still wouldn't trust it. It obviously cost Grady big in the "Let's let Pedro pitch until his arm falls off" game that killed that season. Bobby V seems to be taking a chapter from that book.
I haven't watched many games this year (canceled cable, go to bed a lot earlier because of the baby) but it sure sounds like the game has sped up on Valentine in the decade since he last managed in the big leagues. He must be too busy thinking about what he'll say on his NYC radio show or trying to invent a new sandwich to realize that he should warm someone up in the bullpen BEFORE he'll need him.
