Twins BBF HOF second chance election

This will be one of three second chance round elections this week. What we'll do for the second chance election is a Yes/No vote requiring the greater of 6 or 75% of the votes to induct. The election will be limited to the listed nominees. The elections will only be open for a week--but there will be at least three or four days for discussion and new nominations. You can abstain from an entire ballot (player or contributor), but if you vote in that portion of the ballot, only the guys you expressly vote yes for get credit for a positive vote. The others in that section of the ballot will be considered to have gotten a "no" vote. There will be no limits on how many nominees you can vote for . I will also provide the nomination discussions for the nominees. The deadline for suggesting nominees is twelve hours before the election begins.


In this case, the election will not begin until Saturday, April 14 at 7 am EDT, and will end at 7 am EDT April 21. Nominations close 12 hours before the election begins, or April 13 at 7 pm EDT. Ballots not cast within the stated election time frame will not count.

I'm going to add the case for Firpo Marberry of the Twins/Senators. He doesn't need a second as he had already gotten at least 50% of the vote.

I'll start with this by Bill James in the original Historical Baseball Abstract (1984) entitled “A History of Relief Pitching.” For those who don’t have it , this is what he said about Marberry:

Firpo Marberry was a landmark. Marberry was the first truly outstanding pitcher to be used primarily in relief over a period of several seasons. . . Firpo Marberry was not a good pitcher. He was a great pitcher. Whether or not his career had the longevity that is expected of a Hall of Famer, this I don’t know - but for an eleven-year period of time, 1924 through 1934, Marberry was as valuable to his team as any pitcher in baseball except Lefty Grove. His records are deceptive because, in several of his best years, he split his work between starting and relieving. . . He started 187 times in his career, and his record as a starter was terrific (94-52). How many pitchers in the Hall of Fame do you think won more than half their starts? I don’t know, either, but I know a lot of them didn’t. . . He had a career winning percentage of .623, and that without pitching for either the Yankees or the A’s, the two dominant teams in the American League through most of his career.

Marberry did mix in starting, and in a few seasons for the Senators he was primarily a starter. It leads to a screwy looking record for his time with the franchise, kind of like Dennnis Eckersley's career in miniature. He was twice among the top six in pitching WAR, 3 times in the top five in ERA, 3 times in the top 10 in wins, 4 times in the top 10 in winning percentage, 5 times in the top 10 in WHIP, 4 times in the top 10 in K/ 9 IP, and 7 times in the top 3 in saves, 5 of them firsts.

Chuck Knoblauch for the Twins:

In 1992, he was the fourth best 2B in the game according to WAR. Then in 1994-1997, he was one of the top two 2B in the game, but first in the AL (he was first overall in 1996). In a six year stretch, he was almost certainly the best 2B in his league and definitely played the position at an All-Star level. That should be enough to get him into the Twin franchise HOF. I know he unravelled when he departed for New York, but that's irrelevant here.

Late addition: Knoblauch is 11th in career WAR among position players for the franchise.

This is the other original 16 franchise that only lasted for two rounds--and, given that fact, it isn't exceptional that Judge got left out. Had there been another round and he still failed to make the grade, that would seem to me to be at least odd.

He is also well remembered for his backhand diving catch in Game 2 of the 1965 World Series.

Particularly memorable home run feats included hitting three consecutive home runs on May 17, 1963, combining with Harmon Killebrew to become the first pair to hit grand slams in the same inning on July 18, 1963, and teaming with Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and Jimmie Hall to hit four consecutive home runs on May 2, 1964.

Following his death, the Minnesota Twins created the Bob Allison Award for the Twins player who exemplifies determination, hustle, tenacity, competitive spirit and leadership both on and off the field.

Allison was one of the ALs best sluggers during his decade peak (1959-1968).

However, my main focus is Bob Allison, who had even more finishes in the top 20 career totals for position players of the franchise than detailed above:

Calvin Griffith

Majority owner and de facto general manager of the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins franchise of the American League from 1955–1984.

The senior Griffith owned the Senators until his death in 1955; upon his death, the team passed into the hands of Calvin, who had worked his way up through a variety of positions with the team, starting as a batboy, minor league player and manager (serving a brief stint under Joe Engel and the Chattanooga Lookouts at Engel Stadium), and front-office executive.

A bronze statue of Griffith sits outside Target Field in Minneapolis.

Calvin Griffith was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Herb Carneal
from Wikipedia :
From 1962 through 2006, he was a play-by-play voice of Minnesota Twins radio broadcasts, becoming the lead announcer in 1967.

Carneal received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996, and was inducted into the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting's Hall of Fame in 2004.

Herb Carneal died on April 1, 2007 of congestive heart failure. The Twins dedicated their 2007 season to Carneal, wearing patches on their sleeves in his honor.

Arch McDonald

Served as the voice of Major League Baseball's Washington Senators from 1934 to 1956.

During the early 1930s, he broadcast for the Chattanooga Lookouts, and won the first The Sporting News "Announcer of the Year" award in 1932—a remarkable achievement, considering that the Lookouts were a Class A team. Senators owner Clark Griffith jumped him straight to the big club in 1934, and he immediately became a hit. He was one of the first to use "ducks on the pond" as a term for players on base, and also sung an old country tune, "They Cut Down the Pine Tree," after a big Senators play. He was best known, however, for recreations of road games—a common practice in the 1930s, when line charges were too expensive for live road coverage.

He was named "Announcer of the Year" again in 1942.

He was twice in the top ten in MVP voting, both times with the Senators, and in those two years (1942 and 1944) he was also in the top five in batting average.

Spence hit a pivotal single in the 1947 Major League All-Star Game at Wrigley Field. Prior to his at-bat, former teammate Bobby Doerr singled, stole second, and then took third on pitcher Johnny Sain's errant pickoff attempt. Spence's pinch single resulted in the final margin of 2–1.
