"I won't be happy until we have every boy in America between the ages of six and sixteen wearing a glove and swinging a bat." Babe Ruth
Both were incredible pitchers' duels, but in the 1963 game, Marichal gave up a hit in the first inning, and Spahn gave up a hit in the second, and there was a total of 17 hits in the game, whereas Haddix was perfect for 12 innings, so I have to cast my vote for Haddix-Burdette.

Hard to top a 16 inning shutout
and two top of the line hall of fame pitchers
1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

no he did not top it
he gave up a run and lost
Marichal pitched a shutout and won in more innings
Marichal a W and no runs
Haddix a L and 1 run
sorry

Both games are a case of "who blinks first loses".
I'd argue that Haddix-Burdette is better because both teams had few chances to score. The Pirates only had two RISP opportunities (both with two out and men on third) despite hitting 12 singles. The Braves scored on their lone chance with Adcock's homer-double to end the game.
Harvey Haddix is a freaking legend
why? cuz i have a card of his from 1959
I'd say the Haddix game was better. I think Haddix's 12 perfect innings may be the best regular season pitching performance of all time.
Haddix gave up a run in less innings
Marichal pitched 4 more innings and did not allow a run
in a hundred years Haddix game was not better
did you hear giving up zero runs is better than giving up a run every day of the week and twice on sunday

and if you want to go the rare thing
take koufax perfect game vs hendley's 1 hitter
blows the doors off burdette and haddix who gave up 13 combined hits vs 1 for koufax and hendley

We spoke of Marichal - Spahn at work today after Cain - C Lee last night, first match-up I thought of.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it...Spahn's age at the time. Marichal was young yet, Burdette and Haddix were in their prime. simply because of that, I would have preferred to watch that game. Marichal refued to come out for a pinch hitter at one point as long as, ...'that old guy is still pitching...'.
Haddix was great in that game. So was Burdetter for that matter but nobody ever seems to mention Burdette's performance. It's a shame that both Haddix and Spahn had to lose.

Burdette pitching 13 inning shutout was fabulous but he did give up 12 hits and struck out 2 so he was not exactly dominating in the realm of best pitched games in the last 50 years
Like I mentioned, combined they gave up 13 hits and it was a 1-0 13 inning game
Marichal and Spahn had a 16 inning 1-0 game and Koufax and Hendley included a perfect game and only 1 hit in 9 IP
In 1971 The A's and Angels played a 20 inning 1-0 game in which Vida Blue struck out 17 in 11 innings and the A's finished with a 20 inning shutout with 26 K's and a combined 43 K's for both teams

Gotcha. I guess I slightly misunderstood. But I think there's always a chance when two great pitchers go against each other, or, in the case of Koufax-Hendry, one may pitch the game of his life just to try to match the great.
I'll settle for a complete game/extra inning game. It doesn't have to be 16 innings, that was practically a once in a century type thing.
