Russ Ford had 9.0 WAR as a rookie in 1910.

Bill "Burgess" Lange retired after a 4.1 WAR season in 1899.

Ford actually gets in at 9.5 with solid hitting for a pitcher. That's the top rookie mark so far. I had never heard of Lange. I bet he could be an answer to a few trivia questions with 400 steals and better than a .400 OB% (though he misses a .33000 batting average by a fraction). It also looks like he was one of the quickest players to 1000 hits (fewest games).

You can see from the assigned nickname who has brought Bill Lange to light on this board.

    Indeed it was.

There is one position player and five pitchers who posted 7 or more WAR in their rookie seasons that have not been guessed. I am guessing at rookie qualifications.

Here's one of the highest for rookies, and from one of my favorite players. I always knew he had a very good rookie season, but it took Bill James to show how good it was:

    Harvey Haddix 1953: 7.0 PWAR + 1.0 OWAR= 8.0 WAR

Bill Lange would probably have been thrilled to have had the nickname of "Burgess".As fate would have it,the 6'1''190lb. outfielder had the unlikely nickname of "Little Eva"!!!!As Robert Ripley use to say"Believe it or not"!

Here's another rookie for the leaderboard: Jerry Koosman 1968, 6.8 WAR.

"I know I'm the world's worst fielder, but who gets paid for fielding? There isn't a great fielder in baseball getting the kind of dough I get paid for hitting."
