So far Timmy has been mostly terrible this season. He's 2-2 W-L while allowing 50 hits in 35.2 IP including 6 home runs allowed. He has a 5.55 ERA and 58 ERA+. If this continued at some point the Giants need to start thinking about replacing him.

I hate to say that because he was so talented but I think he is done. his struggles are clearly related to his declining velocity. his velocity consistently went down since about 2011. for the first time in his career his average FB is below 90 (89.7 or so). despite being not even 30 he is not a power pitcher anymore. probably because to throw mid 90s with that Little Body he had to push himself too hard. he was never a large guy so all his velocity came from explosiveness and flexibility which probably prevents him from throwing mid 90s like larger guys.

they also don't bite as much on his slider out of the Zone anymore and force him to throw strikes (similar to what happened to zito who also used to get a ton of Ks on pitches out of the Zone).

unless he reinvents himself as a pitcher I don't see him coming back.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and canít run, most of the time heís clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. Ė Dusty Baker.

A good article looking into what had fueled Timmy's recent success.

Tim was terrible yesterday against the Royals. Timmy pitched just 3.1 inning and allowed 7 hits, 6 ER, and 4 stolen bases.

Tim reminds me of Zito. I always expect the Giants to lose when he pitches. Which is sad.

Finally that day is here!!! Tim has been moved to the bullpen! If he dominates like he did in the 2012 postseason then a career move would be wise.

Could one envision a Eckersley style resurgence for Timmy? If he still threw hard, maybe. But I'm not so sure a guy who is topping out at 89-90mph could be a closer.

Esp. one who walks so many. I think there is a roll in which he can be successful...just not sure what it is. Maybe a ROOGY?

No, not necessarily a closer. Timmy wasn't a closer in the 2012 postseason, he was more of a "long man". Remember those guys? Timmy can still throw pretty hard in short stints when he doesn't have to pace himself. Granted, it's not a given that Timmy can replicate what he did in the 2012 long term. But I think it's pretty obvious that Timmy will never be even an average starting pitcher anymore. Over almost three season Timmy has a 74 ERA+. Timmy is due to make $18 million in 2015 so I hope he can give the Giants value out of the bullpen.

    2012 Postseason
    NLDS: 2 G, 6.1 IP, 3 H, 8 K, 1 BB
    NLCD: 1 G, 2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB
    W.S.: 2 G, 4.2 IP, 0 H, 8 K, 1 BB

    Total: 5 G, 13 IP, 3 H, 17 K, 3 BB

    That's one bad-azz "long man".

We would be asking a lot from Timmy at this point. I believe in short spurts he can be decent, perhaps even good in the pen. But he really sucks right now, Zito type of sucks. So he needs to make some adjustments to even succeed in short stints like coming from the pen.

An interesting fangraphs article. Timmy really struggles with men on base.
