I think neither will win the award. both don't really have flashy names. cain was a no.2 starter till this year and dickey is a knuckleballer.

I think if it stays like this strasburg will win the award with all the hype between him and harper.
I think walks are overrated unless you can run. If you get a walk and put the pitcher in a stretch, that helps, but the guy who walks and can’t run, most of the time he’s clogging up the bases for somebody who can run. – Dusty Baker.

So #2 starters can't win the Cy Young Award?

isn't strasburg on a 160 innings pitched limit or something?

    1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

interesting yesterday DIckey did not get the loss despite giving up 5 earned runs in six innings and left trailing 5-2 while Cain did not get the win leaving after giving up one earned run in 7 innings and left leading 2-1

reminds me of the game a few years ago when Lincecum and Webb pitched against each other and were the leading Cy Young candidates

Webb was removed for a pinch hitter while trailing and Lincecum left leading but the bullpen blew the game

the next day's national headlines were Webb outduels Lincecum, it was beyond funny

I don't think the voters buy into name recognition hype as much as you think. Cliff Lee was hardly a household name before he had a Cy Young-winning season in 2008.

Dickey had 8 innings of shutout ball last night, giving up 3 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 10.

Although I really have very little respect for the ASG, I have little doubt he'll be chosen to start. If he is, he'll be only the third knuckler in history to achieve that feat.

Btw, I'm looking forward to having him inscribe and sign his bestselling book this Monday at a signing he's doing here on Long Island.
    Put it in the books.

I'm not trying to downplay his worthy accomplishments this year, but c'mon, last night he was only facing the Dodgers. They can't hit their way out of a paper bag right now.
The San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series and no one can ever take that away from me!

In 2012 they did it again. Nope, can't take that one away from me, either.

Hmmm.... what do voters think is important? Wins? ERA? More modern stats like WAR?

    Nope, it's a flashy name.

Considering he pitched just as well or better against the likes of St Louis, TB, and Baltimore just a few starts ago, your point is kind of moot.

And yet my sarcasm, once again, misses the mark with you.

R.A. Dickey is top vote getter for the all-star game among pitchers

Folks, believe me when I say that Robert Alan Dickey is one helluva gentleman, as unaffected as one at the top of his game can be. A nice firm handshake, a gracious inscriber, and extremely photogenic. He must have met with over 700 people this afternoon/evening. All this after flying back from the west coast on a precious day off during the season. This rather large autograph session was all about the fans. A real selfless person.
    Put it in the books.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to read that way. The written word, especially sarcasm, can often be taken the wrong way. It's easy to read what you've written and miss how it can be taken the wrong way. I simply meant that he'd missed an example of my sarcasm for the second time, which isn't hard to do. I meant no offense.

Jeez that was a heck of a Mets game. I cant believe Papelbon blew that game like that.

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

Considering it was only an all-star reserve who won it.

Great game, glad I watched it. David Wright showed again why he should be the starting third baseman in the ASG.

Dickey really deserves the honor of starting that game. It's a God (rhymes with ham) exhibition, strategy shouldn't matter. Stupid World Series HFA rule means that La Russa is strategizing how to best use him. That's wrong. It's an honor to start the ASG, and it should go to the best pitcher of the first half of the year, and that has clearly been Dickey.

I know he's the hero because it dropped in front of the fielder but c'mon Wright got jammed and hit a weak popup ans was lucky for it to turn into a gw hit.

Forget starting third baseman..David Wright is the MVP of the first half. He has completely carried their offense. To me, it's gotta be either him or Votto.
