Let's Make a Major League! (Phase 3.5: Team Name Suggestions)

I figure there's no reason this can't go on while we wait for votes in Phase III. In this thread you can suggest names for the 28 teams in our brand new MLB. The one restriction is that none of the team nicknames (i.e., the latter part of the team name) can be the same as any of the existing MLB teams nicknames -- even if the name is being used by a team in a different location. So there can't be a San Francisco Giants, nor can there be a New York Giants, nor can there be a Minnesota Giants. However, you are free to suggest old, unused nicknames such as the Washington Senators.

Also, I would strongly recommend that we avoid suggesting non-plural names, like those used by the NBA and NHL. "Sox" counts as plural because it's just a shortened spelling for "Socks."

Once we get enough suggestions, I'll make a few polls (probably broken down by division so there aren't a huge number of poll options in each) so we can get "Phase IV: Team Names" underway.

    Here are my suggestions:

    Atlanta: Infernos
    Baltimore: Chesapeakes
    Boston: New England Eagles
    Chicago: Colts, Black Sox
    Cincinnati: Buckeyes
    Cleveland: Spiders, Broncos, Lakers, Cougars
    Dallas: Scorpions
    Denver: Blizzards, Colorado Blizzards
    Detroit: Wolverines
    Houston: Hurricanes
    Kansas City: Cyclones, Cowboys, Blues
    Los Angeles: Stars, Mammoths
    Miami: Florida Everglades
    Milwaukee: Mustangs, Meteors, Cheddars, Badgers
Minneapolis: Millers, Minnesota Millers, Minnesota Marauders
New York: Gothams, Brooklyn Atlantics, Brooklyn Bombers
    Philadelphia: Keystones
    Phoenix: Firebirds, Rattlers, Arizona Rattlers
    Pittsburgh: Bulldogs, Panthers, Alleghenies
    San Diego: Destroyers, Dragons, Demons
    San Francisco: Seals
    Seattle: Tsunamis, Pilots
    St. Louis: Stallions, Browns
    Toronto: Ospreys
    Washington: Senators, Potomacs

Unless any of those are serious, I'm not accepting them as suggestions.

It's a good name, but which team(s)? In the polls, I'll have to group each location with the names suggested for that location.

I would like to suggest Monarchs for the Kansas City team.

I liked Tadasimha's suggestions of Excelsiors and Knicker Bockers for the New York teams. Rockers for Clevelands team is a good one also.

If we had the power, phase 4 could be the logos for the teams we decide on

Phase IV is the actual voting on the team names. I think Phase V will be to decide season and postseason structure as well as maybe some rules, like whether or not the DH will be used. The two phases can probably run at the same time. After the team names have been picked, I suppose anyone who wanted to could make logos for them. My graphical skills are nearly non-existent.

Back when I played APBA baseball, I shuffled up all the cards, did a draft, and made my own league.
    I had
    Indianapolis Robins
    Vancouver Lynx
    Portland Goldstars
    Phoenix Mesas (already suggested)
    Memphis Blues
    Richmond Rebel Yells
    Washington Statesmen
    Las Vegas Snake Eyes

I wanted fictitious teams in cities with no MLB representative, and I realize that this doesn't really contribute to the project, I'm just sayin'....I like stuff like this....

You could go to Chris Creamers' sports logos forum - there are a lot of creative people there who are constantly deisgning logos and uniforms. They might be willing to do something for you. Check out the "concepts" section of the forum and you'll see what I mean.

Bear in mind that many of the people on that forum are graphic designers by trade, so they don't necessarily want to give out freebies. I saw a thread there once where a guy randomly requested that someone design a logo for him and the posters didn't take too kindly to it.

True enough, and if the guy was asking for something he intended to use without paying for it, he deserved whatever he got! That said, this would basically be a kind of exercise for someone, a chance to practice and work on sports logos or designs. A few of them might appreciate the chance to dream something new up instead of reworking an existing logo.

Yeah, I suppose it would depend on how the idea was pitched. If you just put it out there as a challenge of sorts, there might be some people who would give it a shot.
