Swing Analysis with Video - 5u Player - Ruthian Blast included

I noticed the leg kick (should have never shown him the Pujols video) is throwing off his timing on a lot of swings. So I'll probably have him tone that down. Other than that, anyone have any suggestions.

@ :49 the magic happens. Up to this point the HR ball has eluded video.

1 - Let him watch as much video and emulate as many of his favorite hitters as he can/wants to
    2 - Tone nothing down
3 - most important of all.... work on the HR bat flip.... here is but one of the possibilities:

    That's awesome.

Why do people think a leg kick is bad? He looks great.

Some view it as extraneous movement that can effect timing, especially when subjected to off-speed pitches and curve balls.

My son has always used a stride and has done very well with it. This summer, his new hitting coach switched him to a wider stance and a no-step swing. I hate it. He hits the ball really hard sometimes. But his timing is terrible now. But it has eliminated his tendency to lunge too much. He started to develop a lunge this spring. He's staying back better with his wide no-step approach. I would stay with the leg kick but stress the importance of not shifting the weight to the front leg.

The front foot must be down when the ball is roughly halfway to the batter. It doesn't matter how it got there.

I've noticed from the other swings I captured on video (not in this video) that sometimes the high leg kick does throw the timing off just enough to cause him to miss solid contact. He still hits hard, but it's off the bottom part of the bat, causing a choppy grounder.

I'm going to try more of a slide step to see if he can control it better. If we get the same results, he'll probably just want to keep the Pujols swing, ha.

This is exactly the moment where youth Dads and coaches go haywire.

The kid is jacking HRs, and you get advice that will significantly reduce his power, ruin his natural swing, and will not begin to fix his timing 'problem' (if he has one at all).

If his timing is off, fix his timing. If he's late, get his movement started sooner. I suspect that he doesnt begin moving until he determines the ball is a strike. He should move on every pitch.

    Don't kill 'the magic', man.

I agree with this. He needs to pop the chain. This video might help.

He needs to walk to first, not third after hitting the HR.

Everything else looks great to me.

Lol, that is hilarious! I couldn't hear sound here at work, but at 2:19 I was LMAO. Too bad my son's too young to have a stache of that quality.

LOL, nice bat flips...those are his and his alone. Just work on him hitting more up the middle; more gap to gap.

Just keep pitching the ball. Don't over think it right now.
